LINTON News August 2018
I must start this missive with an apology – my name is Michelle
Coxall, and I have spent the last six months renovating 64 Sussex
St – aka – the Barr’s Drapery building. I’m sure you have seen the
changes we have wrought on this beautiful building, and the
ever-industrious Tom turning his hand to just about every skill
known to humankind – painting, building, fence erecting,
shrub-clearing – you name it, Tom has done it, and there’s no way I
could have undertaken this project without him. Perhaps you have
even met Brian, my shaggy something-doodle – cocker, labra – no-one
is actually sure what he is. With his winter coat, sometimes I
don’t even know which end of him is which. He’s a rather woofy sort
of a fellow, but his bark is worse than his bite. The fact is, we
have been so busy working on the building and the internal
renovations (under Brian’s canine, if somewhat somnolent,
direction), I haven’t had time to introduce myself and let the
community know what we are up to.
My plan is to open a B&B in the building, with a little
second-hand bookshop at the front. Why Linton? Well, what is not to
love about this beautiful little historic township? I grew up in
another Victorian goldmining township – Buninyong. I went to
Buninyong primary school, and was educated in Ballarat, before
working in Melbourne as an editor, and later, overseas as a travel
writer. Linton just feels right – I love the sense of community
here, the beautiful historic landscape and streetscape. And I have
never met such a friendly bunch of folk! Everyone has been so
encouraging and excited about our project.
When we finally get this bookshop open – soon, I hope – you are
all invited to our modest launch – I’ll put a note up in Kylie and
Chris’ shop. Just call in and say hello. That growl coming from
behind the desk will be Brian, not me, and you will all be very
welcome.
By the way, I’m always looking for good books for the shop, so
if you have any for sale, don’t hesitate to ring me.
I look forward to meeting you all soon.
Warmest wishes,
Michelle

Introducing Cake Industries
This month our introduction to the people involved in Lola
serves two purposes—Jesse & Dean are not only one of the many
artists involved with Lola but they are also opening “The End of
the World” Gallery here in Linton.
Cake Industries—Bio
Artist duo Jesse Stevens & Dean Petersen have worked
together since 2006 as permanent collaboration, “Cake Industries”.
Their eclectic experimental practice utilises mechatronics,
robotics, video manipulation, 3D printing, and reworked everyday
objects to create anthropomorphic and autonomous sculptural works
that embody strange worlds reflecting our own. They enjoy exposing
the inner workings of things, embracing the beauty of raw
mechanisms, and physically remixing the world around them into
visually distorted forms. Often inspired by 1950s science fiction
dystopia and alternate realities, Cake Industries’ performative
sculptures investigate societies, cultures, realities, and futures.
To not limit the possibilities of audience/artwork interaction,
their work inhabits diverse spaces from the traditional gallery
setting to unconventional public locations, often blurring the
boundaries between fantasy and the real world.
Lola
The duo have recently started an experimental gallery space at
63 Sussex St which they are in the process of setting up. This will
be a space for experimental works that don't fit in traditional
gallery spaces both for their own work and other peers. On the 18th
of August they will be hosting an open studio at their studio/home
in Newtown during the day, followed by an opening party at the
gallery in the evening. Everyone is invited and encouraged to
come.
For LOLA the duo will be fully activating the gallery space with
live audio/video collage performance, mechanical sculpture, and
roving sculpture around town.

Linton & District Men’s Shed Update
New Membership Scheme
Responding to community requests the LDMS is
introducing a new kind of membership. It is for those who
may want to support the work of the Shed but for all kinds
of reasons do not wish to take up active membership. It is
open to everyone, men and women. The annual fee
remains at $1 per week or $50 per year. All monies go back
into Shed operations.
Given how we hope, State grant permitting, to begin
building our Shed over the coming year, this kind of
membership will mean a lot when it comes to fundraising
Building A Community Garden
With assistance from Golden Plains Shire, the LDMS have
begun work on creating a small garden on that small parcel
of land between the police station and Wares, Plants ‘n’
Things. It will incorporate bench seating, native trees for
shade and shrubs and bushes to give a restful place for
people to sit and enjoy a break – taking advantage of the
tasty eats and drinks from the goodies available at the
adjoining café. We have managed to lay our hands on an
old pew and are treating it to a work-over and a contact of
Tony’s is going to help out with a little earth work.
Expanded Opening Hours
Because of the growing number of “projects” members are
undertaking and the variation in suitable hours for men to
come to the Shed, operating hours have been extended an
extra hour. We will now be open Wednesday and Saturdays
from 11am to 4pm. All are welcome and please feel
personally invited to drop in for a cuppa and a chat. We
love to have visitors.
Another change in operations is that we will now be having
a yummy home-cooked meal available on two days per
month: the second Saturday and the forth Wednesday. All
welcome! it is a great chance to meet come and see what
goes on.
Building our new Shed
The State Board distributing grants has met and we are
hoping to have some news as to whether or not we have
been successful some time next month. It is a highly sought
after grant and we find ourselves in competition with Sheds
all around Victoria but feel we have a strong application.
We have a well-advanced building plan that is available at
the Shed if anyone wants to have a look and/or even make
a suggestion. Building will not be carried out by the mob in
the cartoon!
The draft lease has now been sent out and that should be
signed in the next week or so. That will be a time for
celebration and another tick along the way to beginning
construction.
One of the things signing the lease means is that we can
begin work on our community fruit and vegetable garden.
That will be an exciting new development in the activities
of
the Shed, one that might offer a new range of possibilities
for members
Enjoy double the lunches at the LDMS With the support of the
'Country Grocer' in Smythesdale we will be providing lunches two
days each month.
The usual fourth Wednesday and now the second Saturday.

Only working smoke alarms save lives.
Are you sick of hearing the sound of a nagging smoke alarm?
Change your old smoke alarms to a new unit with a
lithium battery that has a 10 year lifespan.
New photoelectric smoke alarms that have a 10 year lifespan
ensure families can feel the highest level of security.
Working smoke alarms are your best defence against preventable
residential fires, especially during the night, when
humans lose their sense of smell. These new alarms provide the
security of knowing you and your family are
protected, while also ensuring you’re not interrupted every year
with a nagging smoke alarm.
Why should I have a smoke alarm?
If you don’t have a working smoke alarm installed in your home
and a fire occurs, you are:
• 57% more likely to suffer property loss and damage
• 26% more likely to suffer serious injuries
• Four times more likely to die.
When you‘re asleep you lose your sense of smell. A smoke alarm
is your electronic nose. It will alert you if there is
smoke from a fire. A small fire can grow to involve an entire
room in just two to three minutes. A smoke alarm
provides early warning and time to escape.
Smoke alarms for the deaf and hard of hearing
A specialised smoke alarm is available for people who are deaf
or hard of hearing. Due to the cost of this type of
smoke alarm, the Department of Human Services may be able to
provide financial assistance via a subsidy. For
more information go to the Vicdeaf Smoke Alarm Subsidy webpage
(http://www.vicdeaf.com.au/content.asp?

REMEMBER: Unless a fire is cold to touch it's not out and can
re-ignite with wind.

An Ideal Husband—A Review
Five of the LPG members made the long but worthwhile trip to the
Melbourne Arts Centre this month to see the Melbourne Theatre
Company present An Ideal Husband. Having recently read the play
members were familiar with the plot, however, the fabulous
performances by the talented cast gave the characters and the story
an unexpected lively intrigue.
This Oscar Wilde play tells the story of Lord Chiltern and a
youthful indiscretion which has returned to haunt him in the form
of a Mrs Chevely who holds an incriminating letter and intends to
use it to her advantage. Gina Riley, William McInnes, Christie
Whelan Browne, Brent Hill, Simon Gleeson, Jem Lai, Zindzi Okenyo
and Michelle Lim
Davidson bought their characters to life with clever mannerisms,
expressions, superb timing and subtle nuance. The actors’
performances fully conveyed the playwright’s tongue in cheek view
of genteel society and the upper classes and the humorous jibes
Wilde intended at their expense. A simple but effective set, superb
costumes and lighting complimented the performances. The LPG group
rated the play from 7/10 to 10/10.

It pleasing to inform readers that the Golden Plains Rural
Women’s Network Inc has decided to keep on keeping on with some
renewed vigour and inspiration.
Lobbying for our Shire
It is pleased to note that part of the Network’s submission to
the Federal Redistribution was recognised with the portion of the
previous Corangamite Electorate that had been destined to become
Wannon was actually retained within Corangamite and thus retains
its community of interest with business and education districts.
The portion encompasses Barunah Park, Barunah Plains and Wingeel.
This reflects the course of the Wingeel school bus route that has
for many years taken sec-ondary school children to Geelong from
these localities. Un-fortunately, we were not successful with the
remainder of the submission that focussed on areas closer to
Ballarat and sur-rounds in the Golden Plains Shire.
Changing Our Game
The Network has been successful in securing a small grant from
the Change Our Game Community Activation Grants pro-gram. Our
Network in partnership with Golden Plains Shire Council, aims to
develop and deliver a women’s leadership program. This program will
consist of a series of workshop sessions with a focus on building
the capacity and confidence of local women in leadership
opportunities, with a focus on local sport and recreation settings.
Keep an eye out for details of the launch event we have planned for
12 September…
Sponsored Winners
It is also a delight to an-nounce that Jennifer Mitton of Dereel
and Kaylene Grigsby of Teesdale are the successful appli-cants to
be sponsored by our Network to attend the Victorian Rural Women’s
Network Forum to be held
in early August. This should be a great opportunity for
net-working, making new friends and contacts and building the
resilience of women across Victoria.
Meet our Network Women
The Network thought it may be interesting to provide some
information about our members so we will commence with our
Secretary Jen Blake.
Jen is a farmer living at Barunah Park. She didn’t listen to her
mother and learnt to drive a tractor and to undertake most aspects
of running the property with husband Kevin. Jen is passionate about
listening to and advocating for the needs of rural people and wants
to see younger women become more involved in our communities. Jen
has a pen friend in India that she started writing to as a fan of
the ABC children’s hour. She has been able to visit Marina several
times over some sixty years and is planning a visit later this
year.
Feel free to join us at our next meeting
We look forward to welcoming you at the next meeting of the
GPRWN is Monday 27 August at the Hesse Centre, Rokewood at
7.30pm.

Linton and District Historical Society Inc. Report for August
2018
Annual General Meeting
Our Annual General Meeting is coming up on Monday 17 September
at 7.30pm in the Shire Offices.
Our exciting guest speaker this year will be Margaret Anderson,
the Director of the Old Treasury Building in Melbourne, whom we
have persuaded to come to Linton to talk about their latest
exhibition, entitled Gold Rush: 20 Objects, 20 Stories [at the Old
Treasury Building from 9 June 2018 – 26 May 2019].
This new exhibition tries to capture something of the turbulent
times of the Victorian gold rush through the stories associated
with just 20 objects. From a replica of the largest nugget then
found in the world, to tiny spear points worked by the Dja Dja
Wurrung people from discarded glass bottles, these objects suggest
some surprising new perspectives on a well-known period. And they
invite us to speculate on the ways in which material objects can
serve as historical evidence.
Crinoline dress dating from the 1850
In her presentation to our AGM Margaret Anderson will outline
the stories associated with several of the objects in the
exhibition. They include a lovely 1850s crinoline dress, an
apparently nondescript glass bottle recovered from an
archaeological dig, and some remarkable memoirs penned by an
ordinary working woman on the goldfields in the early 1850s.
This should be a terrific event! Our AGM business will be short
at the beginning and Margaret’s talk will be accompanied by a power
point presentation. We will conclude with a hearty supper. All
Lintonians, members and non-members, welcome.
Become a member!
With our Annual General Meeting on the horizon, it’s time for
membership renewals and a perfect time for you to think about

You may be diverted to the Bacchus Marsh Police Station where
you will be able to talk to another police member or in an

This is probably the most reliable form to get me as I will get
it.
If you have another type of crisis Life Line, Beyond Blue or
your local GP can assist you.
CRIME
In the last month the only crime reported to police in the
Linton area has been the occurrence of family violence between
partners. Family Violence between parties will lead to criminal
offences, which means you will be going to court and that you
may have a criminal record. A criminal record will in some
instances prevent work opportunities, travel overseas to some
countries and probably the most damaging affect being the
embarrassment of seeing your name in the Ballarat Courier.
Later this week, I will be attending a Safety/Security Expo in
Melbourne. I will have a few pamphlets if you are interested in
security around your property.
TRAFFIC
Using headlights (including driving lights) on high beam is not
allowed within 200 metres of an oncoming vehicle or a vehicle
travelling in the same direction ahead of you. You can flash
your headlights briefly to warn a vehicle that you are about to
overtake, but for no other purpose. The rules do not specify an
exemption for divided or dual-lane highways and freeways,
therefore this rule applies on these roads.
COMMUNITY
Does everyone know about the Linton, Victoria, Australia closed
Facebook group. Make application to the administrators to
go on and become involved in the community. You can stay as
anonymous as you want or become a “keyboard warrior”. I
will however make one suggestion, if you have a complaint, don’t
air your dirty washing through the group. If it is in relation
to a council related issue, like planning permits as I witnessed
last week, lodge a formal complaint through the correct
channels.
TRAFFIC—Hey everyone, are you up to date with this law.

SPORT CARNGHAM LINTON FOOTBALL
The Carngham Linton Football Netball Club has some big games to
complete the 2018 home and away season of the Central Highlands
Football and Netball League.
Firstly, we congratulate Tim Clarke on breaking the club senior
games record on Saturday August 14th 2018 with his 277th senior
game played against Beaufort at Snake Valley. A great crowd of past
and present players came out to witness Tim’s wonderful
achievement. It was also great to see Braith Nunn in attendance to
see Tim break his record, and his inspiring speech in the
changerooms before the match was just another reminder of how lucky
we have been to have two such great champions in Braith and
Tim.
Though a gust of wind at the wrong time played a little havoc,
it was fantastic to see Tim run through a banner before the game.
The celebrations continued after the match at the Snake Valley
Hotel, where Tim was presented with a commemorative jumper, plaque
and framed photographs to recognise his great milestone. Our local
poet Noel Hayes also read out a wonderful poem on Tim’s playing
career. Thank you to all involved in putting the day together.
Though our senior grade football and netball teams are no longer
in finals contention, our Under-18 football team currently sits in
sixth position on the ladder with 10 wins for the season so far.
The 13 & Unders have been our best
performing netball team and are currently placed second on the
ladder.
The final two home & away rounds will see Carngham Linton
take on two of its traditional rivals. The Saints head to Rokewood
in Round 16 to take on the Grasshoppers, where the senior football
teams will compete for the annual Combine Trophy.
CARNGHAM LINTON FNC 50-YEAR CELEBRATIONS
The Carngham Linton Football Netball Club will be celebrating
the 50th year of the Carngham and Linton merger in the final round
against Skipton on August 11th.
Round 17 of the 2018 Central Highlands Football League &
Netball League will mark the completion of Carngham Linton’s 50th
home and away season. Come and cheer on the Mighty Saints as we
take on our old-time rival Skipton at Snake Valley.
