VOCABULARY

• Burgesses – Elected representatives

• Cash Crop – Farm crop raised to be

sold for money

• Export – To sell goods abroad

• Think Exit the country

• Import– To buy goods from

foreign markets• Bring in from other

countries

• Plantation – A large estate run by an

owner or manager and farmed by laborers who lived there (or slaves)

WHAT IS THE TRIANGULAR TRADE?

• A trade route that exchanged goods between the West Indies, the American colonies, and West Africa

TRIANGULAR TRADE

• Goods exported from America (Colonies)– Rice, Tobacco, Indigo,

Furs, Whale Oil– Rum, Iron, Tools

• Most Goods were shipped out of northern Coastal Cities

• Goods Imported from Africa and West Indies– Slaves, Gold, Pepper– Molasses

• Goods traded between West Indies, Britain, and Africa– Cloth, Sugar, Iron,

Weapons, Molasses, Slaves

MIDDLE PASSAGE

• Middle Passage– The shipping of Africans

to the West Indies– They were then shipped to

the American Colonies to be sold.

– Slaves were packed into ships, many died on the voyage

• Cash Crop – – Main cash crop in

Georgia and South Carolina was Rice

– Slaves provided the labor
