THE EARTH

Earth is the planet on which we

live. As you know, the Moon goes

round the Earth.

EXPLORING EARTH FROM SPACE

- Can you see the Oceans?

- Can you see the Clouds?

- Can you see the Continents?

SIZE OF THE SUN AS COMPARED TO EARTH

The Sun has a diameter of about 1,392,000

km. Earth's diameter is 12,742 km. The

diameter of the Sun is thus 109 times as great

as the Earth's diameter. In other words, you

could line up 109 Earths across the Sun.

Activity:

1. Earth crossword:

EARTH’S FOUR SPHERES

The Earth’s four parts are called the GEOSPHERE, HYDROSPHERE, ATMOSPHERE, and BIOSPHERE.

GEOSPHERE

Refers to the solid parts of the Earth. It has three layers: core, mantle and crust.

THE EARTH’S CRUST

The thick surface of the Earth. The crust is underlain by the mantle. The crust is in contact

with the atmosphere.

IT HAS 2 PARTS:

The Oceanic Crust is the part of Earth's that surfaces in the oceans.

The Continental Crust is the layer, which form the continents.

MANTLE

The part of the Earth that is deep below the surface and surrounds the CORE.

It is divided into 2 parts:

Upper mantle: It is formed by solid materials and magma (hot liquid rock inside the Earth)

Lowe mantle: It is formed by solid materials.

Core

The central part of the planet. It is divided into two parts:

Outer core: liquid layer above the solid inner core.

Inner core: solid materials form it.

Activities:

2. Find the words in the puzzle below. Then answer the questions.

Core Surface Crust Mantle

Earth Layers Rocky Solid

a) The _________________ has three main layers.

b) The crust, mantle and core are the three main ________________.

c) The __________________ is the outermost layer of the earth.

d) The __________________ is between the crust and the core.

e) The __________________ is located in the centre of the earth.

f) The Earth’s ______________________ is also called the crust.

g) The core of the Earth is under pressure and is ______________________.

h) Earth’s crust is ____________________ and brittle and can break during earthquakes.

3. Label and colour each layer of the earth. Then, describe each layer below.

Crust: ......................................................................................................................

Mantle: .....................................................................................................................

Core: .........................................................................................................................

4. Using research sources, describe the relative temperature and composition of

each layer of the Earth.

HYDROSPHERE

Is the "water sphere" that includes all the water of the earth system.

The hydrosphere is the liquid water component of the Earth, but it can also be a solid or

a gas.

Water in liquid form covers most of the Earth’s surface. It is

found in oceans, seas, rivers and lakes.

Water in solid form (snow and ice) is found in the polar

regions. It is also found on mountains.

Water vapour, a gas, is found in the atmosphere.

It includes the oceans, seas, lakes, and rivers.

The hydrosphere covers about 70% of the surface of the Earth and is the home for many

plants and animals.

ATMOSPHERE

It is the air which surrounds the Earth.

Air is a mixture of gases. It is mainly nitrogen and

oxygen. There are also small quantities of carbon

dioxide, ozone and water vapour.

The Layers of Our Atmosphere

Troposphere:

Is the lowest layer.

Most gases are in this layer.

Plants and animals live in the troposphere.

Stratosphere:

Is the next layer.

There is a thin layer of ozone in the upper stratosphere.

This is called the ozone layer.

Weather phenomena

The principal weather phenomena are precipitation and wind.

Precipitation:

Is water, such as rain, which falls from the atmosphere to the Earth

Wind:

Is the movement of air, and has different names depending on how strongly it blows.

Breezes are gentle winds.

Hurricanes are violent winds.

BIOSPHERE (ECOSPHERE)

The biosphere is the life zone of the Earth

and includes all living organisms, including

man, and all organic matter that has not yet

decomposed.

What is the Biosphere?

• All regions of the Earth those are

capable of supporting life.
