Q: How do you offer socially conscience design that tackles the global WATER problem?

Initial Ideas

- Use found objects and objects that could be made using local processes found in 3rd world countries for ease of production

- The construction needs to be able to be achieved through common construction methods such as metalworking and welding.

- Distillation and Slow Sand filters are very low tech.

- Speeding up the process using pressurized water and then projecting it through the filter to clean the water faster than a gravity fed filter could ever do.

- Dual Functionality, using heated surfaces that are used in the water purification process to aid in other processes as well, such as cooking food.

- Is the unit communal or for personal use?

2 liters of water from a local contaminated swamp 18-24 hours for all three filters to finish

Tool bagWhat more could the instructions be than a piece of cloth?

With the clarity of the instructions as the highest priority, we found that the graphic layout lent itself to some interesting form folding possibilities.

Adding practical funtionality to the instruction sheet elevates this piece of cloth to an artifact with real value.

TED Talk

Area of Empowerment

TED, “ideas worth spreading,” is an amazing platform that transforms an educated crowd into a captive audience. In less than eighteen short minutes, TED sets a stage for a remarkable person to share their ideas with the rest of the world. It transforms theses “remarkable people” into intellectual icons and leaders in their fields of study.

When looking at TED.com and other digital educational platforms, what I noticed was that the audience members in the crowd at conferences, or watching at home online are only given the chance to observe and not actively participate. Within the development of TED, the act of participation was innovated out of the system. Whether or not this was done consciously, I feel that in order for an idea to have an impact on the world, society needs to feel as though they have contributed to that idea. They need to feel as though they have a voice within the system, which they can use to communicate their ideas and opinions. When they are given that voice they feel empowered to help and support the cause, spreading the message on to others.

So how do you give audience members that voice, how do you make them active participants in the TED community?

LIVE UPDATE

REACTION VIDEO

You empower the audience by designing a new system that I call TEDlive. TEDlive allows the amazing minds of the TED conference members to record their TED experience live via a wifi video unload tool. These members can then create reaction videos expanding on the ideas of the day and sharing their thoughts with the online TED community. The online community will have to opportunity to watch the TED Talks live without editing, follow their favorite “ educated minds,” view multiple reaction videos, and hear different opinions on just one talk. This system allows for interaction between audiences with the ability for the Innovation Icon to participate as well. If TED is truly about spreading ideas, then when you actively engage the audience members, ideas will spread that much faster.

Q: How do we reduce Americas dependence on foreign oil and find an answer to our energy addiction?

Page 17: Leigh B Cohen

A: WiWalkWe can bring the global community together through kinetic energy created by the universal activity of walking.

( Lead Designer)Winner- Syracuse University Next Generation Design Competition 2009

Page 18: Leigh B Cohen

The kinetic energy produced from the pressure of walking is stored in piezoelectric materials, such as certain varieties of crystals or ceramics. These materials have the ability to generate an electric current from the applied pressure. The electrical energy stored in the show insert will be stored in the shoe insert until the individual steps onto the energy depositing station.

transferring electric energy or power over distance without wires

intelligent tracking system that detects all objects

Building a Community While Curing Ourselves of Our Energy Addiction

This is achieved by harnessing the potential of kinetic energy by placing a kinetic device in one’s shoe. With this system, one can simply donate energy without being inconvenienced.

Socially connecting people through the need to find alternative forms of energy, this insert gathers one’s daily kinetic power and deposits it throughout the community.

No matter how minute the effort, one will be able to create an impact in order to aid the fight to conserve our energy and save our world.

Q: Why is effective collaboration an important tool in the search to solve complex problems and find innovative solutions?

Page 21: Leigh B Cohen

A: Collaboration : AND ITS POWER TO SUPPORT THE PROCESS OF INNOVATION

Collaboration when done right, has the potential to bring people together from different backgrounds to build upon each others talents to find out of the box ideas that can exceed the needs of the problems that we face.
