The changing season is upon us as we head into the final weeks of term 1 – where has that time gone? I enjoyed a great weekend at the Leeston Vintage Fair last weekend and despite the inclement weather, it was wonderful seeing the interest from some of our students in these old machines. Pictures below are Jack Andrews with his 1954 David Brown , Riley Miller with his Dad’s 1985 International tractor and Nick Maddren on his grandfather’s Lanz Bulldog.

WHANAU, FRIENDS AND SCHOOL (WFS) The Whanau, Friends and School group replaces the previous PTA group. By changing the name we want to acknowledge that is more than just parents and teachers that support our school. Purpose After much discussion on why we want to be involved in our school Whanau, Friends and School group we defined our purpose

To support the school in helping all children thrive and grow in their time in our learning community. We felt this encompasses our

pastoral support for families in their time of need

community building of the New Family Pot Luck and Year 6 dinner

fundraising for goals determined yearly

Fundraising Focus For 2017 our fundraising will pay for external swimming coaches for summer 2018 and any surplus to go towards subsidising camps. We felt that our school has such special resources in our school pool and the local Leeston Learners Pool. In previous years we have had swimming instructors from Selwyn Aquatics providing lessons for the children; this was well received by students, parents and teachers. We thought we could support our teachers in

teaching and improving our children’s swimming skills. The additional money raised would go towards subsiding school camps for all students. The school is faced with increasing costs in this area and this would help keep costs down of this important aspect in the Education Outside The Classroom programme. Your involvement We have many new families moving to Leeston, coming to meetings is a great way to meet new people and meet some of the staff and Board of Trustees. You find out about what is going on in the school. We think that some people have the wrong idea about meetings. Guess what? By coming to a meeting you won’t get landed with a job. You don’t have to go on the ‘committee’. The committee is not too scary anyway….. you basically come and have a chat once a month. You won’t have to commit hours and hours to something you don’t want to do. You can just come to one to see what is going on, no requirement to come to another!! OUR NEXT MEETING: Thursday 11th May 7:30 pm in the Leeston Consolidated School staffroom Registering your help Please complete our form to register what you can help with, from sausage sizzles to Year Six dinner to A & P Baby Animals to helping with chocolates / soaps / calendars …. All you need to do is click on this link: https://goo.gl/forms/R5MYxNR1L2yiTPRs1 and you will be taken to an online form. We thank the people that completed this already; it really helps our event coordinators to have some helpers. We would love to run more events both fundraising and social, and some people have some awesome ideas, but we need people to run them. If you feel passionate about a project let us know, either speak to someone directly or add it as a note on the google form. Karla Morton Secretary Whanau Friends and School SPORTS ROUND UP FOR MARCH It’s been a busy few weeks. A big thank you to parents and grandparents for supporting our sporting events. Ellesmere Swimming Sports This was a great day at Southbridge. (Results are in this newsletter.) A big thanks to Bill for coming along and supporting the team. We have six children going to Canterbury event: Byron Stephens, Toby Chmiel, Ethan Webber, Mikayla Stanton, Arabella Russell and Amelia McConnichie-Prior. Thanks to our time keepers Glenys Chmiel and Jo Maddren and also Mrs Bromley for judging the event. Leeston School Duathlon What a day!!! It poured the entire time for the school duathlon. However, our children showed a lot of determination and grit to complete the duathlon. A HUGE thanks to parents and grandparents who helped out (standing in the dripping wet). Also thanks to Mrs McClure for setting up the transition area. It was a tight race between Nick and Byron, with Byron just beating Nick over the line….very exciting. We also had a good response for the participation race with 11 children competing in this shorter event. Well done to everyone who competed on the day.

Canterbury Duathlon Results Another wet and wild day for the duathlon! Lucky for us we know how to perform in the rain!! Well done to our competitors. A HUGE thanks to the parents for taking the team and waiting in the rain for them to finish. A big thank you to Victoria King for helping to set up the course and Michael Dalley for doing the marshalling. This is an event that requires dedicated parental support. Thank you. Cricket Carnival We had one team compete at the Cricket Carnival at Rolleston on Thursday 23 March. The team did very well winning all three games. The first was against Tai Tapu Blockers (72 – 36), next was Weedons Kings (106 – negative 1) and finally Weedons Thunder (118 – 10). A few sixes were belted out by our team and some great bowling stats. Congratulations to the team and a big thanks to Kevin Stephens, Marie Stark and Lisa Taiaroa for taking the children to Rolleston and managing the team. EASTER PERFORMANCE BY MARTY AND ROY. At Christmas 2016, Marty (a ventriloquist, inspired by Sherlee Lewis) and Roy (the storyteller) gave a puppet, story and quiz for the Junior pupils with a Christian theme. This was one of the many shows they performed throughout Canterbury schools. On Tuesday 4th April they will join us again to perform to the whole school with an Easter theme this time and promise another exciting show. If you do not want your child to participate please let the office know. There is no charge for this show.

JONESY COOK UP Thanks to Jonsey for organising the great CORN COOK UP. We enjoyed eating corn fresh from the garden…always a treat. Is there a parent or grandparent who would like to spend some time with children looking after the school gardens? If you could spare an hour a week or so, I would be interested in hearing from you. Contact Carol Davison [email protected] or ring the school 324 3493.

LEARNING CONFERENCES AND LEARNING GOALS

Interviews can now be booked on-line at www.schoolinterviews.co.nz - The code is 4vuca

Student Learning Conferences will be held on Monday 10th April (2:15 – 6.45 pm) and Tuesday 11th April (2:15 – 6.45 pm). Booking will again be on-line, and details of how to do this are below. We will break for lunch from 12.00 – 1.00 and classes will cease at 2.00 pm on both days to allow interviews to begin soon afterwards. Parents are asked to make alternative arrangements for children to go home or be collected at 2.00 pm. Primary buses will leave school at 2pm. We have contacted Busy Bumbles, and they will open on both days at 2pm to assist parents with childcare. You can contact them directly on 347-3031should you wish to book your child into their afternoon session. Involving children in the conference: Remember that these conferences are about involving children in their learning. The aim is for students to develop the skills to confidently articulate where they are in their learning, what they need to do next and how best to achieve this These conferences are not designed to be occasions for parents to discuss sensitive issues or serious behaviour concerns; a separate meeting at the time the issue or concern arises should be arranged with the class teacher for such matters Booking on-line: You can conveniently book a time that suits you online, or if you do not have access to a computer, you may ring the school office, and we will book the interviews for you while you are on the telephone. To book a time: 1. Go to www.schoolinterviews.co.nz (or access this link through our school webpage) 2. In the green box enter our school code which is 4vuca 3. You will be guided through three single steps and a few moments later you will get an email confirming your

learning conference times.

Free Dental Care for Children

One of our Community Dental Service preventive mobiles will be visiting your school soon.

We will be seeing some school age children enrolled with the Community Dental Service who have not been

seen this year, or who are new at Leeston School (approx. 60 children).

The dental therapist will not only be checking the children’s teeth but will also Xray, clean, and apply

protective treatments (including fluoride) if required.

If your child requires further dental care such as fillings they will bring home a ‘Care Plan’ which will explain

what dental care and appointment times are required

When you receive the ‘Care Plan’ please contact our Call Centre as soon as possible as you will need to

arrange a time to bring your child to one of our Community Clinics for this dental care

Please let us know ASAP if you do not wish your child to have any of this care. You can talk to the

staff in the mobile, or phone/email our Call Centre

If you wish to be present at your child’s check-up this will need to take place at our community clinic so

please phone/email our Call Centre to make an appointment

Please contact our Call Centre if you want further information on the Community Dental Service, to enrol

your child or if you have any specific questions about your child’s dental care (a dental therapist will call you

back)

To contact our Call Centre: phone 0800 846 983 / email [email protected]
