The School Leadership and Management Development Team
What will I find in this booklet? This booklet contains details of the Lancashire Leadership and Management Development Course Programme for the
2006/07 school year.
Which courses are suitable for me?Most of the courses in this booklet are designed for school leaders and managers. Some are designed for ‘middle
managers’ and colleagues aspiring to leadership positions. Each course has a set of aims listed and an indication of the
‘phase’ that it is suitable for. Please check the aims for any course you are interested in to make sure it meets your needs.
In order to assist you in understanding at ‘what level’ the courses are pitched, please see the diagram on page 6
outlining a possible ‘ladder’ of progression through our courses. Although there are no hard and fast rules, we try not
to restrict courses to particular posts within school, as every school is different and everyone’s CPD needs are
individual.
What aspects of leadership and management are covered in the courses provided? On pages 9-13 you will find the courses grouped according to the ‘theme’ or ‘topic’. At the rear of the booklet we
have also included an A-Z index with courses listed by their title and in some cases the aspect of leadership covered.
If you can’t see what you are looking for - please do not hesitate to contact us.
What will the format of the course be?Our courses are delivered by advisers working alongside practising headteachers and senior managers in schools and
LA officers. Each course will outline the educational principles and practical implications involved and support
colleagues in carrying out rigorous self-evaluation. A range of learning tools is used during courses to help colleagues
develop their knowledge and understanding and reflect on implications for their leadership and management in
school. We aim to make our courses informative, interesting, practical and, most importantly, useful in supporting
self-evaluation and planning for improvement.
What do I do after the course? Some colleagues have found a consultancy or coaching session with an adviser or headteacher (possibly six months
after the course) to be a useful way of developing their skills or measuring the impact of the course on school. This
has been found to be an effective way to support and challenge school self-evaluation, supported by an experienced
colleague.

Course Programme 2006-2007
New this yearThis year we are introducing new courses on Coaching, Enhancing Personal Performance, Authentic Leadership and
Developing High Performance Teams in association with Metaphorics (Dr Mark Bawden). These courses have been
extensively trialled with school leaders in Lancashire and were extremely well received.
We also have a new induction programme for headteachers: HeadStart, and, by request, an exciting residential
conference for primary headteachers and senior leaders. This will be held in February 2007 entitled ‘24 hours in
Leadership’ (see page 17).
In support of middle leaders we are introducing a ‘generic’ course on subject leadership for the first time and other
courses to support the development of a rich, broad and creative curriculum.
The success of the ‘Leading the...’ series of courses last year has been built on with new courses in that series. The
induction programme for primary deputy headteachers (IDeAHs) will continue following outstanding reviews in
2005/06.
Much of our CPD provision for secondary schools is tailored ‘in-house’ training (see page 8) but we do have an
increasing number of courses designed for secondary school staff - all highlighted within this booklet.
Supported WorkshopsIn 2006/07 we are again offering...
A suite of supported workshops which provide an opportunity for senior managers to bring along school data,
information or draft materials (such as the SEF) - receive an update on the latest advice and information - and receive
advice and assistance from advisers and their peers.
COMING SOON - watch for the flyers!
