$PROFIT TM

What traits are included in $Profit:$Profit includes nearly every trait that impacts profit-ability. The effect of most traits on profit is fairly simple to understand. Here is the list of what is included and its effect:Revenue Traits

▪ Calving ease = more calves ▪ Weaning & yearling EPD = more weight ▪ Fertility (days to conception) = more weight and

more calves ▪ Carcass weight = worth more up to 1050 lbs. ▪ Marbling = valued based on grid premiums ▪ Ribeye area = value as impacts yield grade ▪ % Retail Product = more yield is more meat

Cost Traits ▪ Cow mature size = bigger eats more ▪ Cow intake = more intake costs more ▪ Feedlot feed efficiency = cost of gain

Some traits are not so easily characterized for $Profit. Milk, for example, is a good thing until you get too much. When over +25, milk EPD has a more negative effect on fertility than it has a positive effect on weaning weight. There are a few traits not yet included in $Profit: longevity, structure, and disposition. These traits are important but difficult to express in dollars.

Why $Profit helps:Today, ranchers have too much data to study. With over 20 EPD traits and so many measurements, buying the best bull has become really confusing. Every bull is good on some traits and weak on others. The challenge is figuring out how each of those traits is going to impact your bottom line. We wish we knew which bull would make the most money from birth to slaughter, but most of the time, we end up guessing.

Back in 2005, we decided that we didn’t want to guess any more. Dallas Horton asked Lee Leachman to come up with one number that sorted the bulls on their bottom line impact – so we did. Since then, we have provided $Profit on all bulls we sell. Furthermore, we are basing almost all of our own selection decisions on $Profit. Literally, we are putting our money where our mouth is.

Let me tell you a story about two bulls that we bought a few years ago from the same sale. Both bulls had complete performance data, ratios, ultrasound, and even feed efficiency data. They were both the same breed. After the sale, we added their herd’s data into our database to calculate EPD’s and $Profit. One bull came out at $8,374 and the other came out at $14,258. That is a huge difference – one bull was a great buy and the other was an expensive mistake.

How $Profit works:$Profit assumes that the average commercial bull will have 100 progeny over its lifetime. The model assumes that you keep 30% of your heifers as replacements and that you retain ownership on the remainder of the calves through finishing and sale on a grid. We realize that many don’t retain ownership, but doesn’t it make the most sense to select from birth all the way to slaughter? Feedlots have already proven their willingness to pay premiums for superior Leachman sired calves.

Our simulation model then factors in all of the effects on both income and expense to come up with a net profit figure for each bull. $Profit allows you to compare any two bulls and calculate the difference in profit that they are expected to generate in your herd. Let’s compare a $10,000 $Profit bull to $6,000 $Profit bull (the average 2008 born Angus bull). The predicted difference between

the bulls is $4,000 or about $40 per calf. $Profit works for us and it will work for you too.

On the Ranch, In the Feedlot, & On the Rail,

$Profit™ simply works!

Feed Efficiency Explained:Feed:Gain: Difference in the amount of feed a bull's progeny will consume to produce one pound of gain.

Example: A -0.50 F:G EPD means this ani-mal's progeny will consume 1/2 pound less feed per pound of gain than would progeny of a 0.00 F:G EPD sire.

Feed Intake: Difference in feed con-sumption of each of a bull's progeny in a 112 day feeding period.

Example: A steer whose sire has a -100 In-take EPD will eat 100 pounds less feed in 112 days than one whose sire had a zero Intake EPD.

$Profit – works on the ranch!

“We were not satisfied with our long term trends on fertility and pounds weaned per cow exposed. In 2008, we decided to buy bulls from Leachman Cattle of Colorado. Since that time, we’ve purchased over 250 bulls and we now run 100% Leachman bulls.

We use Leachman’s $Ranch index because we want to build the most profitable cowherd possible. The bulls have held up well and all of our trends are in the right direction. We see our relationship with Lee and the company as ‘a partnership.’ They are helping us make selections, improve our cowherd, and market the steers. It’s working!”

~ Richard Roth, Manager IX Ranch, Big Sandy, MT

New Design 878We purchased his dam with 878 at side

in partnership at the Bon View dispersal.

LCC New StandardWe bred and raised New Standard at Leachman

Cattle, then sold him to ABS as a yearling.

New Design 1407We first bought his dam and grand dam, then

GAR-EGL ProtégéWe purchased Protégé jointly with ABS

at 18 months from Gardiner Angus.

Now, more than ever, Angus breeders are seeking direction. Some continue to pursue $Beef. Others are chasing maximum growth. Still others are breeding a certain type and kind. While none of these directions are bad, they are not the best. A better selection direction is to make Angus cattle more profitable from birth to slaughter. Our relentless pursuit of superior profitability led us to the early identification of several breed impacting sires.

1: Verified Beef’s Reputation Feeder Cattle® (RFC) program predicts feedlot performance based on EPD data supplied by breed associations. 2: RFC’s star rankings predict sale group performance and carcass traits based solely on inherent genetic merit and do not account for factors such as weigh conditions, bloom, or other managerial or environmental effects. 3: RFC predicted profitability (Relative Value/cwt) is in comparison to cattle with industry average genetics, and is representative of total dollars of difference from purchase to slaughter. Actual realization of these values is dependent on market conditions, management strategies, and environmental effects, including plane of nutrition, days on feed, weather, etc. Verified Beef and Superior Livestock Auction do not guarantee or warranty the actual performance of the cattle. Together Everyone Achieves More.

How to read this catalog1. Reg#: the registration number of the animal. NotReg

means the animal is not registered. Pending means that a registration number has been applied for, but was not issued at the time of catalog printing.

2. Brd: breed of the animal if two breeds or less are involved. If more than two breeds are in the animal, then the composition shows the percent British and the percent Continental, i.e. 58B 42C means 58% Brit-ish and 42% Continental.

3. DOB: date of birth

4. Color: BLK = black, BWF = black white face, BBF = black brockle face, RED = red, RWF = red white face, WHT = white.

5. Mating type: E = embryo transplant, A = via artificial insemination, N = natural service

6. Sex: B = Bull, H = Female

7. P = polled. S = scurred. H = horned.

8. Cooperator herd where the bull was raised.

9. Pen where the bull is located.

10. Genetic Defect codes - a C appended to the end denotes carrier and an F denotes tested free and P denotes possible but untested. NH - Neuropathic Hydrocephalus AM - Arthrogryposis Multiplex CA - Contractural Arachnodactyly OS - Osteopetrosis DD -Developmental Duplication

Phenotype Scores to Make Bull Buying Easier:

11. C. Ease: Calving Ease is the predicted calving ease if you use the bull on heifers. If there is a number in the brown box, this indicates the breed calculated calving ease direct EPD. In addition, we provide our Leach-man estimated calving star system.

***** The easiest calving bulls in the industry. **** Use on smaller heifers with minimal assistance needed *** Use on larger heifers with some assistance expected.

12. Growth: This is a score from one star to five stars, where five stars means maximum growth. Even the

Professional Bull Buyers Guide

one star bulls are as growthy as any bull in America 20 years ago.

13 . Maternal: This is an estimate of maternal efficiency, NOT milk. It includes cow size, milk, fertility, and growth. The bulls are scored from one star to five stars. Five star bulls will produce some of the most profitable cows in the industry if you sell calves at weaning.

14. Feedlot: This looks at all of the post weaning traits including gain, conversion, carcass weight, and carcass merit. Scored from one star to five stars, where five stars would produce maximum overall value in your feeder calves.

15. Phenotype: A combination of eye appeal and overall kind. Scored from one star to five stars. Five star bulls are the best phenotypic bulls in the sale (in our opin-ion)! Two star bulls are less attractive visually than average.

16. Disposition: Our traditional score of 1 – 5 on dis-position. Score 5 bulls are bulls you can walk up to and touch. Score 3 is about average historically for Leachman bulls. However, we are making a concerted effort to improve disposition, so most bulls score 3 or higher. The bulls scored 2.5 or 2 are nervous and do not like to be in close quarters with people on foot – but they are great for big range operations.

17. Actual birth weight. This is not adjusted for age of the dam.

EPDs/ABCs

Breed Association EPDs (Expected Progeny Differences) are listed for all registered animals. Leachman ABCs (Across Breed Comparisons) are listed for all un-regis-tered animals. All ABCs are on an Angus base and can

be compared across breeds within this catalog. EPDs are appropriate association EPDs without any adjust-ments.

18. Birth weight EPD/ABC expressed on an Angus scale (or breed scale for Red Angus, Hereford, and Charolais).

19. Weaning weight EPD/ABC expressed on a breed scale. The Stabilizers are expressed on an Angus scale.

20. Yearling EPD/ABC expressed on a breed scale. The Stabilizers are expressed on an Angus scale.

21. Milk EPD/ABC expressed on a breed scale. The Stabi-lizers are expressed on an Angus scale. This is the best predictor of a bull’s daughter’s ability to milk. It mea-sures the difference in weaning weight that will be produced between one bull’s daughters and another bull’s daughters due solely to milk.

22. IMF is the ultrasound based EPD/ABC for marbling expressed on a breed scale. The Stabilizers are ex-pressed on an Angus scale.

23. REA is the ultrasound based EPD/ABC for ribeye area expressed on a breed scale. The Stabilizers are ex-pressed on an Angus scale.

24. MWT is the predicted mature weight of daughters that you will get if you use the bull on a 1250 pound cow. If your cows weigh 1350, add 100 to this predict-ed weight. If your cows weigh only 1150, subtract 100 from this predicted weight. This EPD is the best indi-cator of daughter size -- far better than frame score or yearling height.

25. F:G is the pedigree estimated feed to gain EPD that predicts the feedlot efficiency of the bulls offspring. A negative number means that the bull’s progeny will feed more efficiently. Example: -0.50 means that the bulls progeny will require ½ pound less feed per pound of gain.

26. Intake: is an estimate of the amount of feed that the bull’s progeny will consume over a 112 day feeding period. It is expressed in pounds. Animals with higher intake will consume more throughout their life. Animals with lower intake will consume less.

27. FS is an EPD, expressed as frame score, predicting the yearling frame score of a sire’s progeny, compared to that of other sires.

28. SC is an EPD, expressed in centimeters, predicting the yearling scrotal circumference of a sire’s progeny, compared to that of other sires.

29. $Ranch EPD: This Leachman profit index that predicts weaning profitability based on calving ease, weaning weight, maternal milk, cow cost, and FERTILITY. Based on producing 100 calves. This EPD assumes a slide on calf prices of $10 / cwt.

30. $Feeder: This number is expressed in terms of the bull’s added value to the sale price of your feeder calves. It is expressed in dollars per head. Thus when comparing a +100 bull vs. a +50 bull, we expect the first bull to sire calves worth $50 per head more at weaning (regardless of their weight).

31. $Profit™ EPD: One, simple, proven number that gives each trait a weight according to its impact on profit.

32. FT: Indicates the bull was individually measured for feed intake. Bulls without this notation, were not individually measured. Unmeasured bulls have EPD’s based on their parental average.

Key to bull comments:

• Any reference to % rank is the percentile rank within that bull’s breed. Top 1% means the animal ranks better than 99% of the population on that trait.

• Reference to the number rank (i.e. #2 $Profit) is the bulls rank within his breed within the sale bulls for that trait. So, #4 F:G ST means the 4th best Feed:Gain Stabilizer bull in the sale.

• All bulls are evaluated for foot soundness. Bulls below a 3 score are deemed to have less than desirable hooves. 2.5 Feet = flatter heal and/or slightly longer toe. 2.0 Feet = flatter heal and much longer toe. 1.5 Feet = evidence of toes curling in on front or hind feet. All such bulls’ feet have been trimmed and sell with our complete guarantee.

• Other abbreviations used in the comments include:

• Dam 5@101 NR – indicates that the bull’s dam has five calves with an average weaning ratio of 101

• WR & NR = weaning or nursing ratio. How the calf ranked within herd on their adjusted wean-ing weight.

• YR = yearling ratio. How the calf ranked within herd on adjusted yearling weight.

• AWW = adjusted 205 day weaning weight. AYW = adjusted 365 day yearling weight.

• REA & IMF = either adjusted data or ratios for ultrasound ribeye area and inter-muscular fat (marbling).

• ADG = average daily gain on test. WDA = weight per day of age at a year.

• Stay = the Red Angus EPD for Stayability. This predicts the likelihood that a bull’s daughters stay in the herd. +14 means that 14% more of this bull’s daughters will be in the herd at age 6.

All claims for adjustment or refund must be made in writing either within six months of the sale date or no later than six months after the animal reaches 18 months of age, with the exception of claims involving defects or parentage.2. In the event an animal is claimed to be a non-breeder, the animal may be returned to the farm of the Seller, if in good condition and in compliance with the health requirements of the Seller’s state. The Seller shall be entitled to six months trial following the return of the animal in which to prove that the animal is a breeder. If at the end of six months the Seller is unable to prove the animal is a breeder, the Seller shall, at the option of the Buyer, replace the animal with another of equal value or grant the Buyer a credit for use on any products marketed by the Seller. Such credit of the full purchase price shall, in any case, be deemed full satisfaction and settlement. Any expense incurred for transporting an animal claimed to be a non-breeder shall be the responsibility of the Purchaser, except that the Seller shall be responsible for transportation costs in excess of the distance between the Purchaser’s farm and the location where the sale took place. If the Seller proves the animal to be a breeder, it shall be the obligation of the Purchaser to take delivery of the animal and pay all expenses incurred for transportation.

3. If a female sold as “safe in calf” proves not to be in calf, the Purchaser may receive service from the bull previously used, if available, or if the bull is not available, the Seller shall be obligated to make a satisfactory adjustment on the purchase price upon return of the animal to the farm of the Seller. Any adjust-ment provided for herein shall absolve the Seller from further liability, except in case such female proves to be a non-breeder. If a female represented as “safe in calf” at time of sale to a certain bull proves to have been bred to a different bull, the Seller shall be obligated to make a satisfactory adjustment on the purchase price upon return of the animal to the farm of the Seller (adjustments shall not be considered to be a breeding fee or an allocation of the purchase price to any unborn calf). Any expenses incurred for transportation shall be the responsibility of the Purchaser, except that the Seller shall be responsible for transportation costs in excess of the distance between the Purchaser’s farm and the location where the sale took place.4. If a female sold as “served” proves not to be in calf, or if a female sold as “pasture-bred” proves not to be in calf, the Seller only guarantees such female to be a breeder.5. If a female sold as “open” proves to be with calf, the Purchaser may return the animal to the farm of the Seller prior to calving for a credit of the full pur-chase price or for another animal of equal value, whichever is acceptable to the Purchaser. It shall be the obligation of the Seller to bear any expense incurred for transportation.GENETIC DEFECT AND PARENTAGE GUARANTEE1. All animals are guaranteed not to produce a calf with the following defects: Dwarfism, Double-muscling, Parrot Mouth, Osteopetrosis (marble bone dis-ease), and Syndactylism (mule foot), and Arthrogryposis Multiplex (curly calf). The parentage of all animals bred by the Seller is guaranteed to the extent that the animal is by the Sire and out of the Dam indicated on its registration paper. These guarantees are effective for a period of two years from date of sale only under the following conditions. a) The Buyer shall notify the Seller in writing immediately upon the birth of a calf suspected of being defective or immediately after determination is made that such calf is defective, or if parentage is suspected or found to be in error.b) The Seller, at his expense shall be permitted and provided, with reasonable opportunity, to obtain blood samples of an alleged defective calf and its sire and dam for the purpose of blood type/DNA analysis to establish parenthood. In the case of suspect parentage, the Buyer at his expense, shall be permitted and provided, with reasonable opportunity, to obtain blood samples of the animal in question and its sire and dam for the purpose of blood type/DNA analysis to establish parenthood. If sire or dam, as indicated on the animal’s registration paper, is proven to be in error by such analysis, the Seller shall reimburse Buyer for cost of such analysis.c) The animals will be returned by the Buyer to the Seller at the Buyer’s ex-pense; provided the animal meets the health requirements for the Seller’s state.d) The replacement of an animal with another of equal value or the refund of the purchase price, in connection with a defect producing animal or an animal whose parentage is in error, shall be deemed full satisfaction and settlement.2. In the event there is a dispute as to whether or not a calf is defective, or parentage is in error, “determination” referred to in Paragraph 1a above shall be made by a person or persons acceptable to both the Buyer and Seller. In the event that Buyer and Seller cannot agree on the selection of such person or per-sons, then each of them shall appoint a representative to make the determina-tion. In the event that such representatives fail to agree, a third person selected by the representatives of the Buyer and Seller shall make the determination.RIGHTS AND OBLIGATIONSThe above terms and conditions of sale shall constitute a contract between the Buyer and Seller of each animal and shall be equally binding upon both. Each sale or resale of an animal constitutes a separate transaction.Neither the sale manager, nor any other person connected with the management of the sale, assumes any liability, legal or otherwise.
