Initiative FundThe Hispanic Business Initiative Fund wasfirst created in Tampa in 1991, and lateradopted in Orlando in 1995, to providequality bilingual and bicultural technicalassistance to the minority businesscommunity. HBIF is a 501(c)(3), not for profitcorporation registered in the State ofFlorida. It provides this technicalassistance free of charge to buddingminority entrepreneurs and minority-ownedbusinesses through its one-on-oneapproach, and a variety of other businessdevelopment programs.

HBIF achieves this by performing a thoroughanalysis of the prospective business orinitiative. Working together with theentrepreneur and other businessprofessionals, analysis are made to

determine his/her strengths, weaknesses,opportunities and challenges as well asthose of their business. This processprovides the entrepreneur with a customizedservice package that addresses the short andlong-term needs of his/her business.

The people we serve are:a. Minority entrepreneurs who wish to start a small business,b. Minorities who already own and operatea small business but need assistance withfinance, marketing, accounting or any otheraspects of their operation.

El Jorgorio está, El Jorgorio está, bien porla maceta. Vamos a bailar, aja! WEPA!WEPA! WEPA!

Las Parrandas¡Ya vienen las Navidades! That’s anexpression that is clearly etched in my fondestmemories of my boricua upbringing. As achild, I remember visiting El Borinquen duringLas Navidades. It seemed like just about everyyear my parents would visit mis abuelitos inOrocovis for the Holidays. Legen has it(according to my abuelito) Puerto RicanChristmas’ are rumored to be among thelongest celebrated in Latin America!

They actually started celebrating LasNavidades in late October and oftencelebrated up until Passover and further!Supposedly on the night of Passover, theywould go so far as to back up the clock so thatthey could have more time to continue ElJorgorio. This was often called La Media Rajaor La Napa.

I still remember the sound of las parrandas,and the chiki que chiki of the guiro. My favoritepart of these parrandas was the way theystarted” A group of us would gather in the batey(front lawn) of someone’s home in the middleof the night, and all you could hear was the

combined whispers, the children’s giggles andthe loud: Shhhhhhh!”. Then, all of a suddenthe music would fill the air with its beats untilour friends would wake up, run for thedoor…still in their pajamas, the lady of thehouse often wearing rollers. Since it wasconsidered a huge honor to have a parrandaat your home, the hosts would immediatelyprepare a warm meal for the parranderos.Afterward, it was common for the current hoststo become guests at other homes that wouldbe visited that night.

Home-made Ron Pitorro (Ron Caña) lent thatextra special feeling to the evening, especiallywhen accompanied by a group of friends/family, a good cuatro termpao, a guiro, a set ofmaracas, a cow bell, some clapping hands,some pretty good singers, (you get the picture).The aguinaldos made everyone want todance, and it seemed this went on hasta elamanecer. My tio Sico entertained everyonewith his trovas y bombas, sweet decimas ofinspirational frenzies. Yeah…those were thedays! The jorgorio would go on all night andinto the morning.

La ComidaIt was impossible to ignore the aroma ofthe Arroz con Gandules, the Morcillas andthe Guineitos en Escabeche. The freshlymade pastels, mmmm boiling in a big blackpot, And the desserts! Arroz con Dulce,Majarete, Flan y Pudin. The ladies wouldall gather in the kitchen, talking about losingweight in the coming year, all the whilegenerously consuming un poquito de todo!Una Piña Colada, Coquio, a Bacardin’Coke, or ¡dame un “chot” de Ron..It’sNoche Buena!

There is something absolutely magical aboutChristmas, particularly if you come from a LatinCountry for our culture is unique in celebratingthe holiday season. Typically, we combinepraying with food and dance. Very appropriate!We all have many reasons to celebrate, thebirth of Christ, the good times and the badtimes, for they make us stronger. The specialmoments we have shared with our loved ones,(some of whom may no longer be with us)many times brings us back to an equally warmand nostalgic past, la música parrandera,Villancico Christmas melodies, a naturalChristmas tree and the traditional food, aresome of the reasons why ChristmasColombian style is particularly unique.Although, there is a special daycommemorating the arrival of the wise men(January 6th), people still like to share presentson Christmas day, December 25th.

Las TradicionesColombia, a country of 40 million people,officially begins its Fiesta Decembrina with TheCandle Light Day or Dia De Las Velitas, onDecember 7th and 8th, which honors La VirgenMaria, in which all the neighborhoodsthroughout the country light candles placingthem on walkways and on the edges of thestreets. Also, la Música Parrandera breaksthe season, Novenas and Villancicos are anofficial part of the celebrations too. Eachregion has its own traditions, the northern partof Colombia “La Costa” which comprises citiessuch as Cartagena, Barranguilla and SantaMarta, celebrate with música Vellencata. Aholiday Turkey dinner, Lechon, Tamales deArroz, Ayacas the popular Caribanolas andButifarras meat pies complete a delicious foodarray.

In Barranquilla on new years eve, peoplealways wait for the incredible giant whistlesound of Cerveceria Aguila, to mark thebeginning of the new year. The rather coldCapitol City of Bogota, gets its warmest time of

but according to the Colombian Departmentof Commerce, the most popular Aguardientein the country is the Arguardiente Antioqueño,“the real thing”…some say!

Christmas and New Years Celebrations are alittle different in Colombia, than in othercountries, for it is not the time for spiritualrelaxing, but for cheering, dancing andrejoicing. We pray to the Almighty forColombians and other Latinos to enjoy aChristmas full of peace and love, not only inour country, but in the entire world.

Another popular region, famous for itsgorgeous flowers and rich land, is Medillin,Capitol of Antioquia State, also called “City ofthe Eternal Spring” and birthplace ofColombia’s parrandera music. Its people areunique characters called “Paisas” known fortheir creativity and hard work. In Paisa countrythe King and Queen of Navidad were alsoborn:El Bunuela Y La Natilla” which is enjoyed byColombians from all over. The Sancocho deGellina (Hen Stew) with corn cakes andavocados (Arepas y Aguacates) with a cup ofMazamorra and Guava Bocadillos or SugarCane Panela are a real treat! The Pastelesde Gloria are heavenly and the popularalcoholic Chicha drink, made of fermentedsugar corn will get anyone in the right mood.The typical parranda drink is the AguardienteBlanco and if you are in Bogota, you willprobably drink Aguardiente Nectar, inManizales you will drink Aguardiente Cristal,

LatinTimes: I know from reading yourresume, that you have a very impressivebackground in your career. Please tell us moreabout your background as a CPA.G.J. (Gil) Hernandez: I started working atBanco de los Colonos in Havana on March27, 1959. During 1958 the high school I wasattending had been closed due to studentunrest protesting the Batista regime. After thegovernment changed from the Batista to theCastro dictatorship on January 1, 1959, thehigh school I attended reopened but not untilMay, a few weeks after I had started my job asan office boy at the bank.

In 1962 I moved to New York seeking a betterfuture. I obtained a position with The ChaseManhattan, N.A., now called J P MorganChase, and attended the American Institute ofBanking, followed by Pace University, both atnight school. I received his degree from PaceUniversity in accounting in 1968. Upongraduation, I started working for ArthurAndersen & Co. I obtained my CPA designationin New York State in 1970. The firm that I wasworking with at the time offered me theopportunity to relocate to Tampa in 1971.

LatinTimes: What inspired you to pursue acareer in accounting?G.J. (Gil) Hernandez: I believe the ControllerI worked for at Banco de los Colonos was agreat inspiration but I also followed the stepsof my family role models. But, after tastingaccounting, I really clicked into it. Accounting,and auditing in particular, is logical. The theoryfollows a logical path. This is not a subjectmatter that you learn by memorizing formulasor poems. Later, my work in the internalauditing department at The Chase ManhattanBank allowed me to be exposed to the bigleagues auditing.

LatinTimes: You are a Partner inValienteHernandez P.A., please share with ourreaders how this partnership came to be.G.J. (Gil) Hernandez: I met Jose Valiente in1981 at the Ybor Rotary Club. During this time,I was working as Vice President-Finance of acompany in the cable television business thathad been an Arthur Andersen client. Later, I

went back to public accounting with anotherlarge firm, Laventhol & Horwath. At the time,I was a Manager with that firm. Jose hadstarted his own practice in 1980 after workingfor a local CPA practice. When I decided toleave Laventhol & Horwath, Jose and I formedthe firm.

LatinTimes: What type of clients do youprovide services to?G.J. (Gil) Hernandez: We foundedValienteHernandez P.A. with the expressdesire to render attestation and consultingservices to commercial, governmental, non-for-profit and professional organizations.

Over the years, the Firm has devotedresources and gained substantial expertisein serving the audit needs of local and stategovernments. We have accumulated vastknowledge serving as auditors of stateagencies, counties, cities, and independentauthorities with assets ranging from lessthan $1 million to over $10 billion. Ourcurrent practice includes organizations inthe areas of philanthropy, education, socialservices and para-governmental activities,as well as commercial enterprises, with anemphasis in the construction industry. Sincethe last three years we gave significantlygrown the number of commercial clients.In many regards our practice is very unique.

LatinTimes: How involved are you with theHispanic community?G.J. (Gil) Hernandez: Throughout myprofessional and personal life I have beeninvolved with various Hispanic professionaland community organizations. I wasappointed Treasurer of the Ybor CityChamber of Commerce for years and thenPresident and Chairman in 1997. I am veryproud to have been one of those that helpedguide that chamber to a sound financialposition. I also am a long-time activemember of the Tampa Hispanic Chamberof Commerce, and was a founding memberof the Hispanic Business Institute of Florida,the Tampa Mayor ’s Hispanic AdvisoryCouncil and the Ybor City DevelopmentCorporation, where I am a Director Emeritus.Most recently I have become active with theAssociation of Latino Professionals inFinance and Accounting, Tampa Chapter.

LatinTimes: Where were you born andraised?G.J. (Gil) Hernandez: I was born in Havana,Cuba.My first nine years were spent in Quivican, atown 20 miles south of Havana. My firsteducation was at a public kindergarten abouttwo blocks from our home. I was sent to aschool that was directed by an old widow,Julia Espasande, who had a white hair bunand used to stick her pencils in it. Julia alsohad a turtle in a fountain in her innercourtyard. She also had a parrot that spokepretty well. Grades one through three Iattended at the town’s public school for boys.

At age 13 I started at the Escuela Profesionalde Comercio de la Habana, the mostprestigious of all commercial schools in thecity, and therefore in the country.

LatinTimes: Where are your parents from?G.J. (Gil) Hernandez: My father, GilbertoEliseo Hernandez Rodriguez was born in LaSalud, Province of Havana, Cuba. He died in1952. Zoila Mercedes Felipa MendezArtigas was my mother and was also born inLa Salud.

Jackie Rojas-Quinones: I was born inTampa, FL @ the Gonzalez Clinic in Yborcity. I lived for 5 years in Key West, FL, wheremy grand-parents and parents owned andoperated a bakery called “La Crema”.

LatinTimes: Where are your parents from?Jackie Rojas-Quinones: My parents wereboth born in Cuba. My grand-father was bornin Spain. My father came to Key West, FL in1960. My mother came when she was 12along with my grandmother and grandfather.

LatinTimes: Tell us about your family.Jackie Rojas-Quinones: My parents hadboth my brother (Javier) and myself. When Iwas in the 4th grade my parents divorced.My father remarried in Colombia, SA wherehe then gave me my little sister (Janet) whois now 18. When I married my 1st husbandright after graduation I had 3 children withhim, they are Julio (20), Jonathan (17), andJaime (15). With my second and currenthusband I gained 3 more step-children andthey are Elizabeth (26), Lia (23) and Jennifer(19). My oldest son, Julio is married to Yanet,who gave birth to my first grandson, AmaniDavis Pacheco. My husband, John’sdaughters have the following children, whowe now share as my grand-kids, Elizabethhas 2 boys and 1 girl, Lia has a little girl aswell as Jenny.

LatinTimes: Tell us about the first time youvisited and joined the Tampa Bay HispanicChamber of Commerce.Jackie Rojas-Quinones: The first event Idid with the chamber was back in 1999,upon starting up my own accounting andparalegal business with my partner (BobGraham, CPA). We had decided to go intobusiness for ourselves and didn’t have anyclients, so we decided to be a part of thebusiness expo, which was held at the Florida

Aquarium. We had a table and just let peopleknow what we could offer them and that wewere new and eager for business. (It worked,look at us now!)

LatinTimes: You are the first woman electedas President for the Tampa Bay HispanicChamber of Commerce. What is the term ofyour presidency and what has this mean toyou?Jackie Rojas-Quinones: Being a womanand President is not as easy as it seems. First,just the idea of acceptance like when you walkin a meeting and they immediately focus onany man walking in with me, thinking he’s thePresident. You almost have to prove yourselfand be better than they would expect just togain their attention. My term was to be fromNovember, 2004 – 2006 and we are in theprocess of amending the term to be until 2007,in order to run concurrent with the term I serveat the United States Hispanic Chamber ofCommerce – Region VI board of director.

LatinTimes: What changes have taken placeat The Chamber since you began youradministration?Jackie Rojas-Quinones: The majorchanges that has taken place at the chamber,I would say is organization in every aspect ofthe definition as well as commitment. I amcommitted to our membership and theirgrowth in knowledge (because knowledge isPower), empowerment, through networking,gaining good business relationships and finallyeconomic growth, which will then empowertheir families well-being by assisting to improvetheir bottom line and facilitating finances.

LatinTimes: Tell us about your team.Jackie Rojas-Quinones: My team consistsof a very dedicated board of directors, whowork endless hours to get the job done. Eachof them has signed an agreement that clearlylists my expectations and they have the abilityto decline their position or sign on and worktogether at this chamber.

LatinTimes: Jackie – Tell us about your “real”career.Jackie Rojas-Quinones: My real career iswhat I plan to be working towards through thehelp of the chamber. I currently operate andrun Accounting and Beyond, Inc., where I havean accounting practice and a paralegal office

that prepares different business entities, suchas corporations and Limited LiabilityCompany’s, etc. I also prepare divorces andbankruptcies. My regular clients consist ofmonthly and quarterly write-up services,where with the help of my staff, William Hohn,Yanet Pacheco and Jason Sementelli, weprepare alcohol returns and sales taxreturns. By careful organization and meetingdeadlines we help keep my clients on a goodaccounting track to empower theirbusinesses bottom line figure. After, I havecompleted setting my foundation I willeventually like to run for a seat with the countycommissioners.

Latin-Times: What message can you givebusiness owners looking to more effectivelyreach the Latin community in Tampa Bay?Jackie Rojas-Quinones: Belonging to agreat organization such as the TampaHispanic Chamber of Commerce will givethem the tools necessary to meet people theymay not have had the opportunity to meetelsewhere and to build great businessrelationships for life.

"My hope is to leave footprints, where I will beremembered as the first lady president, for havingplayed a key role in turning the chamber aroundand for setting procedures that will allow thechamber to continue to grow and prosper,procedures that were put into play now, but will bearound for years to come. LatinTimes: Where were you born andraised?Yolanda Fernandez: I was born in SantaClara, Cuba. My family left Cuba fleeingCastro when I was just 5 months old. Wesettled in St. Petersburg and eventuallymoved to Clearwater when I was about tostart school.

LatinTimes: Where are your parentsfrom?Yolanda Fernandez: My parents are fromSanta Clara, Cuba.

Latin Times: Tell us about your family.Yolanda Fernandez: I have a wonderful,close family. I have three older brothers,and several cousins who are also my bestfriends.

My mother lives near me and is a hugepart of my life. She helps me and myhusband care for my two children, a 10year old boy and an 8 year old girl.

LatinTimes: As a young child, did youhave any idea, any vision, of what youwanted to accomplish?

Yolanda Fernandez: As a young child Iwanted to be a teacher, then later, a musicteacher. I spent hours practicing piano andmy parents sacrificed a great deal toprovide me with lessons. In fact, my firstcollege major was music. I actuallygraduated with a double major in music andbroadcast journalism.

LatinTimes: Tell us about your time asMiss Alabama, and the Miss Americapageant.Yolanda Fernandez: I was always a goodstudent, but there weren’t manyscholarships available to me. The pageantprovided a way to use my music to furthermy education. I ended up getting a fouryear, fully paid college education throughAmerica’s Junior Miss, and Miss America.

LatinTimes: Tell us about your first “big”break.Yolanda Fernandez: My first big breakcame after I had worked a couple of yearsat small stations. I was hired by CBS towork at its brand new ‘owned andoperated’ television station in Miami. Thisgave me the opportunity to work in a majortelevision market and to use my bilingualskills.

LatinTimes: What do you feel is yourbiggest accomplishment in your career?Yolanda Fernandez: One accomplishmentI am proud of is a series of reports I didout of Cuba in 1994. I went back,undercover, and put together six reportsgiving viewers an uncensored first handview of post-USSR Cuba. The reportsearned an associated press award.

LatinTimes: Your career in Broadcastingand Media spans nearly 20 years, howhave things changed within the industry forLatinos and Latinas in general.Yolanda Fernandez: It has changed agreat deal. For many years I was the onlyLatina working in the local televisionmarket. The Hispanic market, as aconsumer, was largely ignored. Now, there

is a great deal of interest in reaching thisgrowing population. Just recently I waspart of the station’s first bilingualtelevision spot to promote hurricaneawareness.

LatinTimes: Tell us about your workwithin the Hispanic Community.Yolanda Fernandez: I try to be the newsdepartment’s unofficial liaison to theHispanic community. I air frequentreports on Hispanic events and issuesin the Tampa Bay area.

LatinTimes: What message can you tella young aspiring journalist?Yolanda Fernandez: I would urge him/her to study hard and do well in school.Read everything. Be persistent inreaching your goals. Persistence anddedication are necessary qualities to besuccessful in journalism.

MEDIA BIOYolanda Fernandez is a newscaster withWFLA-TV, News Channel 8, weekendmornings and afternoons. She anchors andreports during the week. Fernandez joinedChannel 8 in October, 1989 as a generalassignment news reporter. Prior to that sheworked in several other markets. To begin,she started her career in Montgomery,Alabama anchoring live local newsbreaks for“Good Morning America.” She then relocatedto WTOG in St. Petersburg and eventually toa CBS-owned station in Miami before returningto the Tampa Bay area.

Yolanda grew up in the Bay area. Shegraduated Valedictorian from ClearwaterCentral Catholic High School. Fernandez alsograduated Summa Cum Laude from TroyState University in Alabama where shereceived a Bachelor of Arts degree inBroadcast Journalism, Music and ModernLanguage. In 1982, she was named MissAlabama and ultimately was named 3rdrunner-up to Miss America.

Fluent in Spanish, Yolanda is very active withthe Hispanic community. Yolanda presentlyresides in Clearwater with her husband andtwo children.

Lechon a'la Varita

This recipe for Empanaditas willadd variety and a Dominican flavorto your holiday Hors d’oeuvresplatter. This is a generic recipe inwhich you can substitute thechicken for cheese, ham, vegetables, seafood or any filling of yourchoice. Time: 60 Minutes. Level of Difficulty is Medium. Serves: 8people

Start by boiling the chicken with the chicken stock and half the saltuntil tender.

Ingredients:2 cups of all purpose wheat flour1 lb of chicken breasts1 cup of butter or vegetable oil2 cups of oil (for frying)2 leaves of corianderchopped finely1 tablespoon of tomato paste

Preparation:As the chicken is boiling, you can chop the onion and the greenpepper into very small cubes. When chicken is ready, shred thechicken very finely. In a shallow pan heat two teaspoons of oil, addthe onion, chicken and the green pepper, stir. Add the black pepper,the coriander and the tomato paste. Let simmer at very low heat untilall the liquid has evaporated.

In a deep bowl mix the flour, 1 teaspoon of salt, butter, cold water,baking soda and egg yolks. Knead until all the ingredients areincorporated and the dough is smooth and elastic. Add additionalflour or cold water as needed. Wrap the dough in saran wrap andkeep in the refrigerator for 25 minutes.

Roll out the dough on a lightly floured surface. Cut out circles ofabout 4 inches in diameter. Put a teaspoon of the chicken in thecenter, double over in a semi-circle and seal the border pressing itwith a fork. Deep fry the pasties and put on a paper towel for aminute before serving.

In Puerto Rico and otherparts of “El Caribe” they usedto cook the pigs - whole -outdoors on a stick. In thestates, this tradition hasbeen preserved with few changes; many people use a large rotisseriegrill, while others make an inexpensive cinder block oven.

You can split the pig in half and spread-eagle for faster cooking.

Let’s Get Started: Time frame: 4 weeks to the D-day - order pig1 week to D-day - buy seasoning ingredients, 2 days to D-day - prepareseasoning, 24 hrs to the D-day - pick up pig and season it Startcooking 7 hrs before meal-time.

Supplies Needed:Pig - cleaned and ready to goRazor blade - to cut any hairs missed by butcherVinegar - to wash pigSharp knife - to make slits on raw pig for seasoningCold storage - (large tub or container), ice to store pigBale wire and stick - preferably metal rodBasting brushCheesecloth – to cover pig once it is seasonedCharcoal - (20 lbs for a big pig), charcoal fluid, shovel, large rotisserie(optional) or Makeshift ovenTable – hard smooth surface to cut cooked meat, butcher knife,large trays to serve

Ingredients Needed:One 25 lb suckling pig, ready to cook24 cloves garlic, peeled3 tbsp whole dried oregano1 tbsp peppercorns (Whole black peppers)3/4th cup salt½ Cup sour orange juice (Jugo de naranja agria)Achiote

What to do: CRUSH the above ingredients in a pilón. Mix thoroughlythe garlic, oregano, peppercorns, salt and ½ sour orange juice. Makedeep gashes in pig on the neck, just under the lower jaw, on the loin,legs, shoulders, and over the ribs. Rub seasoning into the gashes, aswell as inside and outside the pig. Cover with cheesecloth and setovernight in a cool place.

What to do!

1. Whip the 6 egg yolks in a small containerby hand.2. Blend the following separately in a biggercontainer:1 can of evaporated milk, vanilla andcinnamon.3. Add the following:Whipped yolks, 3 cans evaporated milk,condensed milk, coconut cream and theBrandy.4. And last, add the rum.

Refrigerate and served chilled!

Boil one tablespoon anisette in a cup of waterand leave to cool. Mix and sift the flour, bakingpowder and salt. What a wonderful month full of cultural gatherings and celebrations, we haveenjoyed. Latin Times was lucky enough to be there to catch it all!

The Hispanic Heritage Man & Woman of The Gala, was held on Saturday,September 24, 2005 at the Hyatt Regency in Tampa. Latin Times staff was veryimpressed by this event. Drawing hundreds of Tampa Bays Latino Business Com-munity out in they're finest attire! The food was great, the music was great, butmore importantly the program was great. Jose Valiente, founding partner of Valiente– Hernandez CPA, and Dr. Adrienne Garcia, Executive Director of HCC’s Founda-tion, were recognized as the Hispanic Man and Woman of the Year during the18th Annual Gala hosted by Tampa Hispanic Heritage Inc.

Salsa Fest was held on Friday and Saturday, October 7th & 8th, despite the rainSalsa Fest was a huge success, providing the town & country area of Tampa with2 days full of cultual music and performances, food and great music. MC'd byEladio Linarte of Delite Entertainment. This event was produced by the UpperTampa Chamber of Commerce. Performers included Luis Alfonso y su OrquestaInternacional with a wonderful performance! Luis Alfonso also performed at 1st.

Moving from the city of Chicago, wherehumidity is almost non-existent, to the Bay,where humidity is not your amiga,especially if you have naturally curly hair. Itis a daily battle trying to have shiny, smooth& frizz-less hair. A battle that I can help youconquer! I know my Chi-town chica Jolie,can relate to this.

I am here to let all you frizzy pelo chicas knowthat there is hope. With some of my productrecommendations, styling tips and/orchemical services YOU WILL SURVIVE & youtoo can have gringa pelo (or close)!

If you have fine to medium hair you canprobably get away with just using the rightproducts and/or tools to style your hair straightor curly. Start your regimen witha shampoo that will cleanse andgive you some anti-frizz control.Then following with a conditionerthat will give your hair somemoisture, smoothness and close the cuticleof the hair and also provide some humiditycontrol, so your pelo won’t freak out when youwalk outside. The next step should be applyingsome leave in styling aid to help with the blow-drying process. This product will help againwith frizziness and humidity plus will add someshine to the hair. If you use a flat iron I wouldhighly recommend you spray some kind ofthermal protectant on the hair to avoid overdrying and damage. The final step after stylingshould be some kind of locking and sealingproduct to help fight humidity affecting your“DO”. I suggest a shine serum and/or somekind of light hairspray.

If you have medium to coarse pelo you mightwant to consider chemically straightening your

pelo, it would surely make your daily fight a loteasier. Some great chemical straightenersout there:

The Japanese Straightener (the mostexpensive-$500 & up) or a regular relaxer (not

very expensive-$50 & up).

Some benefits with the JapaneseStraightener are that you will probablynot get very frequent touch ups. If doneby someone qualified, this service willactually restructure your hair to look veryhealthy. This procedure takes about 5-6 hours. If you decide to go with thisprocedure make sure you do a littleresearch on the service, salon and the

stylist performing it. Try to get a referral to astylist and/or salon. Just because it is the mostexpensive, doesn’t mean they’ll do the bestjob.

A regular relaxer, you will most likely needfrequent touch ups, almost like hair color touchups. There are several different types ofrelaxers; they vary from mild to extra strength.It depends on the texture, condition and howstraight it will be desired. With this kind of

relaxer the client should notwash their hair or aggravatethe scalp within 24-48 hoursbefore the service. Thereare also mild straighteners

that last less than the Japanese and therelaxers. Some of these straightener brandsare Rusk-Anti Curl, ISO, Vavoom (Matrix),Redken and others.

All of these chemical procedures make yourhair weak, delicate and fragile, especially ifyou already have had some other chemicalservice. If you currently have hair color in yourhair and do a chemical straightener, most likelyyour hair color will lighten. It is possible tohave healthy pelo when chemically processingyour pelo. This means you need to use goodproducts, regular trims and regularstrengthening treatments (reconstructor)

Even with a chemicalstraightener I still recommendusing the products for frizz andhumidity control. Every little bithelps!
