What’s that smell? You know what it is – your mouth is watering, your nose is pulling you toward it and your feet are willing accom-

plices, because the delicious aroma of meat cooking outdoors is irresistible.

Many’s the lakeside dweller who has mastered the manly art of grilling steaks on the patio or deck; far fewer have conquered the quirks of ‘cue. As Will Heath discovered at the Lakeside Park barbecue cook-off, few people have the time to devote to developing the perfect barbecue technique, but those who do insist the secret is to keep the heat “slow and low.”

The barbecue grill is likely the only place we’ll find low heat for the next few months. This is the time when bare feet sizzle on asphalt and tempt us to waste eggs on the blacktop just to see if they will fry. It’s when the hum of the air conditioner replaces the roar of the lawn mower as ubiquitous background noise. It’s when haze blurs the twinkle of the stars but not the flicker of the lightening bugs. It’s when there is no entertainment more attractive than a day at the lake.

This is summer in Alabama, it’s Lakeside, and it is definitely where we want to be.

Shirley Bobo will be the first tell you she has a crav-ing she has never been able to satisfy.

“I’m hooked. I’m addicted. I admit it,” Bobo said, laughing. “It’s really a hobby. About all I accomplish is to maybe sell enough stuff to replenish some supplies.”

That hobby is the creation of jewelry she sells locally at the Artscape Gallery in Pell City as well as at area art shows. Bobo’s jewelry is fun; she uses a variety of colors, gemstones and other materials in her creations, which range from necklaces to earrings to bracelets.

Bobo retired from Medical Center East (now St. Vincent’s East) more than five years ago.

“About the first year I was retired, I was happy as a bug in a rug doing things in the house that needed to be done. Then after that I found myself being a little bored.”

Her brother has his gemology certification and ran a jewelry business. He encouraged Bobo to take a gem-stone-identification class, and she was off from there. She has taken numerous lapidary classes and developed her talent enormously since then.

“I have taken beading, seed beading and cold con-nection, which is a method of making things with rivet-ing and not having to solder.”

She works with numerous types of semi-precious gemstones and metals including sterling silver, copper, lampwork beads, Swarvoski crystal, turquoise and others. She’ll also incorporate materials such as shells, pearls, bones, clay and wood into her works.

“There’s not much of anything you can’t put into a jewelry piece. You never quit learning. You’re always tak-

Shirley Bobo needed a creative outlet after retiring from a career nursing, and making jewelry has filled that need for her for several years.

ing another class and learning another technique.”Bobo draws inspiration and ideas for her jewelry

from sundry sources.“Sometimes it comes to me in the middle

of the night when I can’t sleep and sometimes from looking at other things in nature.”

She grew up learning how to sew and believes the eye she developed for color combinations in the fabric and garments she created now help her when she is deciding what a new piece of jewelry will look like.

“You’ve got to have lots of material to work with because you’ve got to find that right thing. There’s only one beading place in Birmingham to buy supplies, so I buy things from everywhere. We were in South Dakota recently, and I bought gemstone bead strings from there.”

She also travels to Arizona to find unusual stones and items for the jewelry. She will even occasionally use earrings that have lost their mate as a pendant for necklaces.

You can find Bobo working on her jewelry almost every day for at least a couple of hours of that day.

“My work space is set up where I can see the TV, and most of my beading I do in the late afternoon or night. I use my Optivisor (a magnifier worn on the head) and good lighting, so I can see. I figure if I’m go-ing to be spending time watching TV, then I ought to be accomplishing something while I’m doing it.”

Making jewelry is an art Bobo loves because of the enjoyment it gives both her and the people who take a look at and buy her jewelry.

“I’m creating something that hopefully people will keep and wear and love, because I can’t keep all of the pieces. It’s kind of like giving away one of your chil-dren after you have labored with a piece, but it’s great to give it to someone to have it and really appreciate it.”

She also loves being able to utilize natural materi-als to create something unique and attractive. After 30 years in nursing, she likes having a whole other way to bring joy to the lives of others.

“Just to be able to use the things that God gives us in nature – He gives us not only the things we need,

They say his name is Henry, and he’s a handsome guy with big brown eyes.

Henry makes his home in a slough off the main channel of Logan Martin Lake.

And you can tell by the way she talks about him, Debra Hammonds adores him.

She meets Henry for dinner on a regular basis. And her husband, Jimmy, doesn’t seem to mind.

Hammonds meets Henry about once at day - 5 o’clock sharp.

He’s normally waiting at the end of the Hammonds’ pier.

Henry, of course, is a turtle. Hammonds has fed Henry dinner for the past five

years. He seems to prefer a diet of bread and water.

Although I didn’t personally get to see Henry during my latest trip down river, Hammonds swears the turtle ex-ists and lives close by.

He’s her pet.“He’s about this big,” she said spreading her hands

about one foot apart. Her friends, Carol Willis and Beth Bennett, both of

Pell City, vouched for their friend, saying they too have met Henry, the big turtle.

“It’s really amazing,” they said. Henry swims up to the end of the pier, looks at them,

batting those big, sexy brown eyes. “It like he’s asking, ‘Where’s my food?’” Hammonds

said. On this mid-day visit to the slough, the three women

tried to coax Henry to the surface of the water with bread offerings, but the only creatures responding to the white bread floating on top of the lake water were a swarm of small bream.

“It’s too early for Henry,” they said. The plan was to get a picture of old Henry, but I

guess he’s just camera shy. The sun was getting higher in the sky, like the tem-

perature, so I moved on after talking to the three women who say they were having a “girls day” out on the lake.

They headed back to the pool as I continued my adventure up a slough with no name, or at least every-one I asked about the name of the slough shrugged their shoulders saying, “I don’t know.”

“You make up a name for it,” the three women sug-gested.

“O.K., I’ll surprise you with the name of the slough in my Lakeside column,” I said.

I hope they like the name.So, I continue paddling up Bayou Slough. At least I didn’t name it after the explorer – me. Really though, I don’t think Atchison Slough or

David’s Slough sounds that good. I thought Bayou Slough was perfect, because at the

very back of the slough, the water came close to a road called Bayou Ridge, which was where I was headed on this very hot summer day.

I began my trip from a place that has become one of my regular launching pads, Surfside Six, next to the Ala-bama 34 Bridge, which spans the main channel of Logan Martin Lake.

I wasn’t sure how this trip was going to work out. Right from the start I had a couple of lakeside residents who didn’t seem to want me to get into the water.

They actually hissed at me as I approached with my 17-foot touring kayak.

Apparently the pair of geese did not want to share their spot at the end of the boat ramp with me.

At first, I wasn’t sure if the two were going to attempt to flog me. That thought did cross my mind.

But the two geese finally scooted to the grassy shore-line and allowed me to get under way in my big yellow vessel.

I paddled from the St. Clair to the Talladega County side of the lake and headed south down Logan Martin Lake, part of the Alabama Scenic River Trial.

I couldn’t have picked a better day. I had attempted to make this trip the Sunday before, but the water was covered with boaters zooming up and down the lake.

No way, not in a kayak, so I held off until Thursday. There was limited traffic on the lake, and it was really relaxing.

I traveled south to the first slough on the Talladega County side, the newly christened Bayou Slough.

Just as I headed into the slough, something caught my eye – a friendly flock of barn swallows. Then I finally focused in on a line of gourds, which attracted the small,

fast-flying birds. Someone had strung up a long line of gourds, extend-

ing along the length of a wooden pier. The resident drilled holes in each gourd so the swallows could nest there.

I must have watched the birds fly in, out and around the gourds for close to an hour, snapping pictures of these graceful flyers. It was fun watching their acrobatic air show.

As I continued down Bayou Slough, I spotted a small brown animal in the water. Only its head was visible as it left a trail of ripples along the surface of the water.

I thought to myself, “Beaver? No. Muskrat? Nah.”

It was only Rock - the swim-ming dog who belongs to Bobby Richards of Talladega.

You just never know who you’ll run into out on the water.

Rock was beating the heat with a mid-morning swim, and he seemed to enjoy it, too, paddling his way through the water.

This area of the lake was beauti-ful. Residents really keep their property manicured, and flow-ers and shrubs abound along the shoreline, blending nicely with the natural surroundings.

As I continued my journey, I met Valerie Hurst and her 2-year-old son, Connor.

“It was nice when we first got

out here, but it’s starting to get hot,” Valerie said.

It didn’t seem to bother Con-nor, who was attempting to land the “big one.”

His mother says it’s not unusual for Connor to reel in a catch or two.

“The small bream here are like piranhas,” she said. “As soon as you throw your bait out, they are all over it.”

It certainly makes exciting fish-ing for a 2-year-old boy.

After saying my goodbyes, many of them, to young Connor, I continued my trip to the back of Bayou Slough, a sort of horseshoe shaped slough.

The further I paddled up the slough, the narrower and shallow the slough became.

A white buoy floated on the top of the water warning boaters about submerged stumps. This is one thing great about kayaks. You can get into areas not accessible to larger boats.

I finally made it to the Stemley Road overpass. It was sort of neat paddling underneath Talla-

dega County 207, also known as Stemley Road. The overpass also provided some needed shade for me to cool off.

I continued to work my way past the bridge to

see how far I could travel up the slough. I made it a couple of hundred yards before it became too shal-low, even for a kayak.

I finally turned around and headed back to Surf-side Six.

This was really an enjoyable trip – even if I didn’t get to meet Henry.

Oh well, maybe next time, but until then have a safe and wonderful time on the lake.

Forty-five years ago, Talladega native Dan Kearley won a national championship playing football for the University of Alabama and coach Paul “Bear”

Bryant.Today, Kearley and his wife, Frances, who have been

married 45 years, live on the water at Funderburg Cove near Pell City, a place they have enjoyed the past 14 years.

What started out as a starter home for their son, Scott, has turned into the Kearleys retirement dwelling.

“We moved here in 1997,” Kearley said. “Back when (Scott) first moved back to this area, we were looking for a place on the lake and we found this lot. We purchased

it, and during the period of time, Scott graduated from college and became the juvenile probation officer for St. Clair County. Frances grew up on the water across the road, and we wanted to settle in this area.”

“We love living on the water because it is home to us,” Kearley said. “We are near our son Scott and his wife Amy, and our 13-year-old granddaughter Danielle.”

With Danielle being their only grandchild, Dan and Frances enjoy spending time on the water with her. “Frances taught her how to swim,” Kearley said. “We had been here a couple of years, and Danielle wanted to go out on a pontoon boat so we bought one.

“We stayed on the river every chance we had. After a

couple of years, she really didn’t care about going out on a boat anymore. She would rather stay by the shore and swim. She really likes getting on a Jet Ski with her daddy.”

Looking backCoach Paul “Bear” Bryant had been at the University

of Alabama only three years when Kearley arrived. Dur-ing the four years Kearley was at The Capstone, 1961-64, the Crimson Tide won two national championships and he played with and against some of the great names in the sport.

Kearley grew up in Talladega and had wanted to play football as far back as he could remember. He started playing organized football in junior high school and played four years of varsity ball at Talladega High School.

When he graduated from Talladega High, Kearley was 6 feet tall and weighed 235 pounds. At that time,

coach Gene Stallings was the recruiter for Alabama. He visited the Kearley home and talked with Kearley’s father.

“My dad was a Church of Christ (stalwart), as was Stallings,” Kearley said. “I think that was the biggest thing that influenced my father wanting me to go to Alabama.”

Kearley remembers the first time he met Bryant. “We went down for a recruiting visit and walked into his office,” Kearley said. “Dr. Gus Davis from Talladega took me down and introduced me. Bryant carried us to Morrison’s Cafeteria for lunch, and we had about a two-hour visit with him.

“I was impressed with coach Bryant long before I met him. I had heard a lot of stories about him. He was only in his third year and had started building a name for himself.”

That championship season in 1964

Kearley experienced the thrill of being a national champion as Alabama topped the AP Poll. The Tide had a perfect 10-0 regular season and played Texas in the Orange Bowl.

Trailing 21-17 late in the game, Alabama had the ball at the Texas 1-yard line. On fourth down, Joe Namath attempted a quarterback sneak but was stopped short of the goal line. While many, includ-ing Namath, say he was in the end zone, the game officials said otherwise, gave the ball to Texas and Alabama lost the game.

“In the locker room after the game, coach Bryant told us if we had of sucked up our guts and drove the Texas defense three yards deep into the end zone, there would have been no question,” Kearley said. “He told us we lost the game.”

In his three years as a member of the varsity squad, Kearley played in three bowl games, won a

national title and was on teams that went a combined 29-4. He was also named All-American.

“I enjoyed my time at Tuscaloosa,” Kearley said. “I had the chance to meet a lot of good people and played with some big name players like Joe Namath, Ray Perkins, Tommy Tollison, Paul Crane, and the list goes on and on. Today, we still have that camaraderie where you can call on them anytime.”

Graduation and pro footballWhen Kearley’s four years were up, he needed three

hours to get his degree so he attended summer school and received a B.S. in education. Once he graduated, Kear-ley did not know what he was going to do, but when the American Football League’s New York Jets signed Namath, they signed Kearley as well.

Kearley signed with the Jets as an offensive guard after having played defensive guard for 90 percent of his career. He went to training camp and realized he was one of the smallest guards on the team.

“I weighed 245 pounds and several teammates were well over 300 pounds,” Kearley said. “I thought I was about to get cut, but Namath went to head coach Weeb Eubanks and told him I had played defense in college, and the Jets were hurting at the defensive end position due to injuries.”

Kearley was able to play in three games against the New England Patriots, New York Giants and Philadelphia Eagles, but once the injured defensive players returned to the team, Kearley was cut and he came home.

Once he returned to Talladega, a Jets assistant coach, Lou Michaels, called to suggest he might play with the Richmond Rebels for a year and then come back to the Jets the following year. “I was on my way to Richmond, Va., when I received a call from Bill Minton from Mobile,” Kearley said. “He was the general manager of the semi-pro football team in Mobile, and he wanted me to come play for him. When I told him I was headed to Richmond, he wanted to know what they were paying me.

teaching. I turned around and went to Mobile.”Kearley played for Mobile two years and coached at

Murphy High School. Later he and his family later moved to Georgia, where he coached for a few seasons before making his way back to Talladega.

Once Kearley returned to his hometown, he went to work for the Alabama Institute for the Deaf and Blind. He stayed there 27 years before retiring and was the director of the E.H. Gentry Technical Facility the final 18 years.

Is there a comparison?From his lakeside home this past winter, Kearley

watched the Crimson Tide beat Texas in the BCS National Championship Game to earn another national title.

“I wasn’t worried about Texas; I had been more wor-ried about Florida in the SEC Championship Game,” Kearley said.

When asked to compare the 2009 national champion

Crimson Tide to the 1964 national champion Crimson Tide he played on, Kearley said it is just about impossible to compare teams 45 years apart.

“When we won our national championship, Frankie McClendon and myself were the two biggest players on the team, and I weighed 224 and Frankie weighed 230. Today, that is the size of running backs. I’m not sure we could even compete with the size and strength of the players today.”

Kearley said in order to win a national championship, first of all you have to prepare yourself mentally.

“Then you prepare yourself physically, and both coach Bryant and coach Nick Saban are masters at doing that,” Kearley said. “The one thing you cannot prepare for is inju-ries. An injury can change the whole scope of a season.”

Given a scenario in which Bryant and Saban were opposing coaches today, Kearley said, “If they went against each other 10 times, each coach would win five games each. They would go 5-5.”

Gayla Fairchilds at Hazelwood’s Greenhouses and Nurs-ery in Pell City said container gardening is all about the “thrill, fill and spill.”

When working with a pot, barrel or large vase to create a new individual garden design, Fairchilds looks at the different kinds of plants she can use to make it something special the customer will love.

The thrill can come from a unique container or a dramati-cally tall plant, Fairchilds said, as long as it draws somebody closer to the arrangement to see what else is in the planter. She said a tall pot may call for a majestic plant to add drama, but a whiskey barrel planter may make her think of a country

arrangement including bright yellow day lilies to bring charm to a garden.

The fill can be any plants that provide intermediate height to take care of any empty spaces around the taller plants.

The spill includes the plants that trail down the sides of the container and create those cascades of greenery and color that finish off the look of the garden.

“A container garden is a spotlight feature,” Fairchilds said. “I can be anywhere, even on vacation, and something can draw my eye and make me want to check out a planter if the plants look interesting or the pot is unique. You pick out a $10 pot and make it look like a $100 pot if you pick the right plants to go with it. They’re also great because you can switch out some of the plants as the seasons change and others continue to

thrive through multiple seasons and years.”Fairchilds suggested putting pansies in during the

colder months to bring in some color, while ferns and raspberries can work to liven up a garden at other times of year. She said plants can be left in the containers you

bought them in and nestled amid the other plants in an ar-rangement until you want to switch them out or the plants are out of season.

Some of the plants she has really been enjoying during the early summer are fatsia, heuchera, hosta and drift roses. She said the fatsia is perfect for a shade garden and is fairly winter hardy. However, having it above ground as it is in a pot garden she recently created did lessen its chance of survival. But Fairchilds said some of her customers just want for things to look good and don’t mind much about the survival rate of the plants past the short term.

Of course, she knows many clients might want a more tropical look for their poolside gardens, and Fairchilds also has some suggestions for them.

Fairchilds chose pink and purple angelonias, red celosia and multicolored coleus for this whiskey barrel planter.

She said to achieve that tropical or exotic look without tak-ing up the space that a windmill pine would, she recommends that her customers use a podocarpus yew pine to achieve a simi-lar look. She also said the brightness of portulacas can be a great addition, plus those plants don’t require a lot of maintenance.

While some customers might be a bit skeptical of some of Fairchilds’ plant choices - such as using a shrub she called pink blushing nandina instead of another flower in some wedding arrangements - Fairchilds often reassures her customers to trust her when it comes to making the perfect container garden. One bride recently asked Fairchilds to make some arrangements for her, and instead of using the colorful coleus the bride expected, Fairchilds surprised her by suggesting the nandina because she knew the coleus could overpower the rest of the plants they were using.

Even if you are not going for a tropical look or planning the foliage for a wedding, Fairchilds can still offer some practical advice for how to plant a garden and which plants will last.

She said even if the basket look appeals to a customer but the basket they like is too big for a hook, she can still create the look the client wants using a pedestal to give height without changing the shape of the pot.

faced cuphea are a good pair for a sunny planter.

“Plants like the angelonia and the gazanias are more of the plants I love to work with right now,” Fairchilds said. “I don’t really have any plants that I detest, but I definitely have ones I like more from working with them so much. One great standby plant for a backdrop and some foliage is the diamond frost euphorbia, which is also nicknamed a redneck’s baby’s breath. Irises are also great for an ornamen-tal element.”

If the plants are already in your garden but you want a different look for some of your larger plants, Fairchilds has even been known to come to some customers’ houses to work her magic on a container garden.

Fairchilds has been working at Hazelwood’s for about eight years “this time around,” she said, because she worked there for a while after high school before going back to cleaning houses as she had done since her early teen years. When she kept getting calls asking if she would be clean-ing houses in Pell City so that maybe she could stop by and make a few planters, she decided she needed to get back on the payroll and keep doing something she loves to do.

She said the inspiration process for her may seem like chaos to others, but she knows what she is doing and what she is looking for. Fairchilds has a work table set up

at Hazelwood’s, where she will spread plants out, arrange them in groups or clear off the table at different times to let color palettes jump out at her.

“Nature puts together a beautiful color palette, and the colors will just strike me,” Fairchilds said. “This table may look junked up to my customers, but by setting plants out randomly on the table I can pull colors out and harmonize them. I can find my anchor or base flowers and work off of those colors.”

Fairchilds has also spoken at garden club meetings and dem-onstrated how to plant a dish garden. She can tell which plants will work in almost any situation, pointing out that the heat is what will kill most plants that can’t survive well in the South.

She said she has gotten used to the heat by coming in early when it’s not as hot and tempering herself to the later heat, but some of her customers seem amazed that she can work outside to create her container gardens.

“It is a labor of love,” Fairchilds said. “I thank God that I have the ability to do it and that I have been able to please people like I have. It’s fun to do, and I have a passion for it. When my customers are bringing me pots and telling me to make them look good and they’re not picky because they always look good, I know I’m doing something right.”

That’s the way Mike and Teresa Shell like to live, and that’s the way things are at their Logan Martin home.

grandchildren spend lots of time out on the water; it’s a lifestyle the entire family loves.

“We go out on the boat and swim every day,” Shell said. “We can’t get enough of it.”

The Shells have lived on Logan Martin full time since May 2004, and they wouldn’t turn back for anything.

Shell grew up visiting the lake, skiing and fishing since he was a youngster.

It was during those years, too, that Shell understood what he

would do with his life.His life became one wrapped up in music and the enter-

tainment world, a life he still enjoys to the fullest.“I feel like I’ve never had a real job,” he jokes.It started when he was in school playing the trumpet in

the middle school band.Then, he heard the Beatles’ recoding of “I Want to Hold

Your Hand,” and the rest, as they say, is history.“I knew right then what I was going to do,” he said. He went on to learn to play other instruments, specializ-

ing on the bass guitar.Then, he got a lucky break one night at Sonny Duke’s

Place, a Birmingham nightclub. A bass player hadn’t shown up, and a call came out for a

fill in. “I just said, ‘here I am,” Shell recalls.He ended up with a long-standing gig at the club, and

then bought it.He later owned Mike Shell’s Honky Tonk in the ‘90s, and

in between toured with big-name entertainers including Hank Williams Jr. and Billy Joe Royal, Merle Haggard and Willie Nelson.

The Shells started their own company, Shell Entertain-ment, in 1994 and have since provided music and much more

for events all over the state.Weddings and receptions, high school reunions and family

get-togethers and corporate events are just a few of the gather-ings for which the Shells entertain, whether it’s live music with Shell’s band or heading up professional DJ services and karaoke.

But there’s more to having fun that brought the Shells to the lake.

Though their love of entertaining continues, it was two bouts with cancer that brought Shell to the decision to make Logan Martin Lake the couple’s home.

In 1981, when he was just 30, Shell had his first encounter with cancer. Doctors found colon cancer, and surgery along with chemotherapy and radiation followed.

When his second bout with cancer came in 2001, things got even worse, Shell said.

“It was bad in ‘81, but this time, it was worse,” he said. “I really didn’t know if I would live or die.”

It was then he started thinking about getting away to Logan Martin, he said.

“I just decided I wanted to go back to the lake,” he said.The Shells brought their RV to Lakeside Landing in Pell

City for a year and the next year, found a spot they liked at St. Clair Shores.

It wasn’t long before Shell knew he wanted a permanent

home on Logan Martin and contacted Pell City Realtor Law-rence Fields.

The Shells had spent time riding the shoreline looking, and before long, they spotted the place they would soon call home.

The property belonged to former Talladega Mayor Charles Osborne, and the Shells decided to buy it right away.

The Shells joke that their home is smaller than their boat house, but that’s the way they like it.

They like taking advantage of the lake’s outdoor attributes hands on.

The Shells call the house their “treehouse” because it sits atop a rise above the water and is surrounded by large old-growth trees.

A series of decks spreads from the side of the house, where the Shells have created an outdoor cooking area along one side adjoining a large screened-in eating space on one side.

A glass-topped table and chairs in wrought iron keep com-pany with the cooking area, which includes a conventional stove as well as a large gas grill.

Potted ferns and geraniums dot the porches and deck, and there’s a large hot tub in a corner.

The deck that spans in between offers seating for relaxing lakeside and also leads into the house.

of the house, with a full view of the water down below through windows that the width of the room. Gold shell-patterned fabric coves soft upholstered couches, accented by white wicker tables.

The room’s nautical theme is reflected in a draped fishnet adorned with fishing and boating paraphernalia. Walls are ivory, and an ivory area rug with a carved geometric pattern accents the wood floor.

Shell’s love of the water has led him on a journey of discov-ery to find just the right boats for enjoying it.

During the course of their life on the lake, the Shells have been through 10 boats, trying to find the combination that was just right for their interests.

“And finally, I have,” Shell said. Now, inside the Shell’s boathouse, there’s a Javelin bass boat

and a Sea Ray cruiser ready and waiting for an outing at any time.Swimming, fishing, sunning and all kinds of fun take place in

and around the boathouse during the warmer months.Shell and his fellow band members are known to strike up a

party in the neighborhood and have had boat-riding guests fill up their inlet on more than one occasion.

“One time we played for nine hours; we set up on the porch and people just kept coming,” Shell said.

People tie their boats up together, some even have grills on board, and everyone just enjoys the relaxed lake environment, Shell said.

“We had a great time,” he said. “I guess you could say it’s like having a big redneck yacht club and everyone having a good time.”

That’s what living on Logan Martin Lake means for the Shells, who say having friends and family over who enjoy the set-ting make it even nicer.

“This is the kind of place I just never want to leave,” Teresa Shell said. “If I had my way, I’d never even leave the driveway.”

With a laugh, she continues.“If only I could have my groceries delivered,” she said. Now

that would really be perfect.”

38The Tavern of St. Clair has been open only a little

more than a year, but already it has some history. It is located on Cogswell Avenue at the former site of

Café Avante, and the kitchen is overseen by the same chef, Clint Bullock.

Bullock earned an associate’s degree at the Florida Culinary Institute in West Palm Beach in 2001 and has been active in the restaurant business ever since.

When Café Avante closed, Jay and Cindy Bordes bought the building as an investment. Jay had just retired after 33 years in pest control, and neither of the new owners had any experience in the restaurant business.

Before taking the plunge into their new endeavor, Cindy had been involved in the Alabama Wildlife Commission cooking competitions, “which is really how we became food-ies,” she said. “This past year, we came in first in the seafood division for our Big Daddy’s shrimp and grits,” which is also on the menu at the Tavern.

Bullock, meanwhile, was working at Magnolia’s in Tal-ladega, but the Bordeses enticed him to come back to Pell City.

Next, they hired as bartender a Birmingham mixologist who has invented eight specialty cocktails (including Who’s Driving Home, The Adios Amigo and the Berry-Berry Bad

“We’re really unique for Pell City, but we also have regular customers coming in from Birmingham, Annis-ton, Gadsden and Talladega,” according to Jay.

Bullock cites the Big Daddy shrimp and grits as one of his favorite menu items as well, “but the St. Clair rib-eye is the people’s favorite. The Uptown black-eyed peas is another favorite, an old Southern dip with a unique, uptown spin to it.”

Other menu items include Mediterranean tilapia, crab au gratin, a variety of steaks and pork tenderloins, chicken cacciatore and several varieties pizza, includ-ing a build-your-own option. But the menu is subject to change.

“We’ve changed the menu three times since we’ve been open,” Cindy said. “We normally add things on at customers’ request. Most recently, we added shrimp scampi, chicken piccata and chicken marsala. Oh, and the pan-seared salmon, that’s another customer favorite.”

The restaurant is divided into two sections. The front, according to Cindy, is “quiet, and nonsmoking. The back is sports bar, complete with 13 TV sets. Any Ala-bama game is going to seen back here. We’ve got a really good Alabama sports following.”

All dishes are made to order, from scratch. Dur-ing the week there is an $8 all-you-can-eat buffet, and weekends see the chef-cut, all-you-can-eat prime rib buf-fet. Weekly buffet selections are posted on the Tavern’s Facebook page.

“We celebrated our one-year anniversary June 5 with catfish, ribs and live music,” Cindy continued. “It occurred to me then, about 80 percent of our current staff was with us when we started. We’ve had little to no turn-over, and I think that says a lot about us. Normally you see a lot of turnover in the restaurant business, particu-larly with the servers.”

The Tavern also boasts a 100 percent health depart-ment rating.

The lunch buffet is open from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, and the prime rib buffet is 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday. Dinner hours are 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday and 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays.

A local project to help feed pets in need has also given homes to numerous bluebirds.

The Pet Pantry, which provides pet food as an adjunct to the Christian Love Pantry, sold 73 bluebird houses to raise money last winter. A number of people who bought the birdhouses had no place to hang them, so they donated them to establish a bluebird trail at Lakeside Park in Pell City.

It all began last November, when a volunteer with a local food aid organization noticed that her clients also needed food for their pets.

“Last year, we saw an increase at both the Pell City Animal Shelter and the Christian Love Pantry in the need for animal food,” said Michele Pfannkuche, Pet Pantry coordinator.

Pfannkuche said to help meet that need, she started the Pet Pantry. “The Christian Love Pantry volunteer base was the best way to reach people countywide,” she said. “We wanted it to be convenient, so residents could get what they need in one stop,” she said.

Pfannkuche said that in its first six months, the Pet Pantry gave out 4,548 pounds of pet food to 429 residents.

In January, Pfannkuche and her next-door neighbors, Dave and Cledith Fisher, came up with the idea of selling bluebird

houses to raise money for the Pet Pantry. Dave Fisher, already an expert birdhouse builder, con-

structed bluebird houses to sell to area residents. The birdhouses were available for a $20 donation, and buyers could personalize them with “In Memory Of ” or “In Honor Of ” a person’s or pet’s name. Plain birdhouses were also available.

“We had two personalized face fronts available,” Pfannkuche said. “We had the Pell City Animal Shelter’s 10th Anniversary face front, and a ‘Feeding Pets in Need’ Pet Pantry face front.”

Cledith Fisher said they chose bluebird houses because, until retiring last year, she had worked with Camp Fire USA’s Save the American Bluebird project, which began in the early 1960s.

She said to celebrate Camp Fire USA’s 100th anniversary, she and her husband had a goal of building 100 bluebird houses. With the houses they produced for the Pet Pantry, they nearly doubled that goal. “Dave built 118 bluebird houses for the Camp Fire USA project and shipped them to 11 states, in addi-tion to the 73 he built for the Pet Pantry,” she said.

Now, some of those birdhouses are providing homes for bluebirds in Pell City’s Lakeside Park.

The bluebird houses built as a fundraiser for the Pet Pantry were available for a $20 donation, and buyers could personalize them with “In Memory Of” or “In Honor Of” a person’s or pet’s name.

Cledith Fisher said some of the Pet Pantry bluebird hous-es were donated, and in March a bluebird trail was established in the park.

“The bluebird houses are all around when you drive through the park,” she said. “They are placed facing out on trees back from the road.”

She said bluebirds are ground feeders, and do not go into the woods, feeding out in the open instead.

“They like to be facing out with ground area in front of them,” she said.

Cledith Fisher said bluebirds normally produce three broods a year in March through July. The eggs hatch in approxi-mately 15 days.

“The houses are built out of cedar and have a squirrel guard, which is important because squirrels will chew through the opening to get in the birdhouse,” she said. “There is a hole in the back for placement, and you hang them at eye level.”

She said bluebirds will not lay eggs in the same nest year after year, but will build one nest on top of another in the same birdhouse.

“It is important to clean out the birdhouses in the fall so the nests won’t stack too high and harm the birds,” she said.

Dave Fisher said it takes him approximately 15 minutes to make each birdhouse.

“Cutting the pieces takes the longest,” he said.He said the bluebird houses have a beveled edge so water

will drip off the bottom of the birdhouse and not pool.“I like untreated wood, and use cedar because it is long-last-

ing and kind of bug-proof,” he said. “Cedar also weathers well.”He said the bluebird houses should be placed about four to

six feet high on the north or east side of the tree.Pfannkuche said the bluebird houses will be available for

purchase again this year during September and October.“We will do another round for the holidays, perhaps with

Cards were dealt and prizes were won, only it had noth-ing to do with casinos or gambling.

It was all about roaring around on the water with friends in the name of charity.

That’s what brought the McCay family out on Logan Martin Lake on May 22. They were among 87 participants in the annual Poker Run to benefit Pell City’s Civitan Club.

“We love that Logan Martin Lake does these kinds of things. It was a fun event, especially if it’s going to a good cause,” said Andrea McCay.

The Poker Run took place entirely on the lake. Throughout the event, boaters would stop at five designated docks to pick up a special playing card at each one. Whoever ended up with the best poker hand by the end won.

The Poker Run did its job, raising $1,355 for Pell City’s Civitan Club. Civitan International is a nonprofit organization of volunteers dedicated to meeting community needs. Its primary goal is helping people with developmental disabilities, and that’s exactly Pell City’s focus.

Civitan Club President Blair Fields said the Pell City chapter aids programs to raise money for special needs children. These programs have included Toys for Children, Pell City Idol and a cardboard boat regatta.

“We try to be everywhere we can,” Fields said.The charitable spirit is what brought the Andrea and Kyle

McCay all the way from their home in Hoover that warm Satur-day morning.

a home on the lake. They loaded their boat, a Caravelle Interceptor, full of friends and took off to the different docks to try their hand.

It turned out to be a good hand indeed. The Mc-Cays turned up a flush, which won them the first prize of $500.

Andrea McCay said they were both surprised at that.

We never win anything,” she said.The victory was all the more special, as the pair

had just married in January. She said it was a fun way to make some memories in their first year.

Matt Schrecongost of Trussville also had some good luck on the water. He said the event sounded like a good time to get out with some buddies, so he made the trip from Trussville to meet his friends and cowork-ers. The group was armed with a boat, a burger cooker and a good feeling.

Schrecongost came away with third prize, a gift card to Bass Pro Shop in Leeds.

such an event this year. Another Poker Run was held June 12 as part of River-side Celebration Day.

The same rules applied, yet there was an added bonus, a “Mystery Dock” where participants who found it could purchase additional cars to improve their hands.

This Poker Run was to help the Beautification Organization. The pro-ceeds were for maintaining the flow-erbeds at the Riverside Town Hall in addition to raising funds for a rockwork “Welcome to Riverside” sign.

Both Poker Runs proved to be quite popular.

Riverside’s run was a big hit, espe-cially with its “Mystery Dock.”

The Pell City Poker Run had a big increase over the 70 registered par-ticipants last year. Fields hopes it will continue to increase the next time.

The participants do, too.“It was a blast,” said Andrea McCay.

“We can’t wait for the next one.”

50 “Slow and low.”It’s the motto of TNT Barbecue proprietor Tim Thomas,

and it’s the main reason he has become a fixture in competi-tions sponsored by the Kansas City Barbecue Society.

“Slow and low,” he said. “It’s a good thing.”Thomas was one of 42 different competitors, both amateur

and professional, on hand for the recent barbecue cook-off at Lakeside Park. All of them had been grilling long hours before turning in their meat for judging purposes, and all said the time put into it is key.

“Time is a big key,” said Daniel Okonski, one of Pell City’s “Bad Boys of Grilling.” “Time, spices, sauce, just everything. It’s important what type of wood you use, how hot you want it, everything.

“There’s a lot to it. Sometimes you can go to a competition and win first, then go to another one and do the exact same thing and finish last.”

Preparation and cooking time aren’t merely the keys for competition barbecue chefs. Wade Rich, who helps run the barbecue grill at Pell City Texaco, says most of his customers are people without the time to barbecue properly.

With summertime comes the irresistible aroma of meat on the grill. The barbecue pros say the key to perfect ’cue is keep it ‘slow and low.’

“Some people have plenty of money, some people don’t have much,” he said. “But nobody’s got time.”

The grill has been in operation since Memorial Day 2009. “A lot of my business is mothers and wives picking up

something for the weekend,” he said. “Or, ‘I’m picking the kids up from school and we’ve got ballgames tonight’ — that kind of thing. They just come in, pick up a butt and they’re set.”

While he wasn’t inclined to give out any grilling secrets — “I’d have to kill you if I did” — Rich says the key ingredient is time.

“Smoke,” he said when asked for a grilling tip. “We use mes-quite charcoal and put some spices on the meat.” Asked what spices, Rich repeated, “some spices.” We use a liquid that makes the spices adhere better to the meat, turn the fat side up and we smoke them for a couple of hours.”

certified graduate of that curriculum.“We train all our judges to look for three

things,” said Ron Harwell, a KCBS official and self-described “Ph. B.” “One is appearance. Does it look good? Does it look like some-thing I’d drive all the way from Pell City to the other side of Birmingham to get?” he said.

“After that is taste and tenderness.”Predictably, all the cooks at the park said

they are frequently asked about tips for better grilling. But, according to Boyd Edmiston, from Madison, the key is what the cook likes.

“If you like it and you think it’s good, that’s the main thing,” Edmiston said. “I can always cook something better, but if it’s something I want to eat, I feel like I’ve done my job the way I wanted it.

“The main thing to remember is, you’re always the one who has to eat the leftovers.”

Landscaping can serve as a point of pride to a hom-eowner, creating a unique environment and adding a personal touch to the home’s exterior.

Along Logan Martin Lake, examples can be found that go well beyond the addition of a few flowers, plants and sod.

A project at the home of Randy and Diane Harrison neared completion in mid-June. The Harrison family had a stone staircase laid along with two levels of ledgestone wall.

The staircase winds down from the rear of the house to an open patio with stone flooring. The patio is accentuated by a stone fireplace built into the lower wall.

The two- to three-month project has turned out beauti-fully, according to Diane Harrison.

“It is so much nicer than I ever thought it would be. I did not see the full picture,” she said. “We are so impressed with the way (the landscaping company) has handled everything.”

Employees from Trimm Landscape Inc. also did repaving, planting and sod work at the Harrison home.

Owner Tommy Trimm said the company could perform a wide range of projects, with prices ranging from $2,000-$150,000.

“We have done a lot of just sodding, stuff like that too,” Trimm said. “We don’t want to pigeonhole ourselves, where people say, ‘We can’t hire them, they only do large projects.’ You want to be able to offer your customers a wide range.”

home of Steve White. That work included a staircase, a walkway to the front entrance and basic landscaping.

The main part of that project was a 230-foot wall along the shoreline of the owner’s property. The wall is between six and seven feet tall, dropping below the rocks lying in the shallow water.

Trimm said he used stones that are found in the area to give a more natural feel to the projects. He said they also designed the seawall to take into account some of the property’s natural environment, such as several large stones jutting out toward the water.

“(The owner) likes to sit out here and fish on this rock,” Trimm said. “So we just built the wall around it.”

Trimm said the GeoStone Segmental wall was completed in February. He said it and other similar projects were best done during cold weather.

“These have to be built in the winter time,” he said about the seawall. “That’s our objective up here (higher on the bank), to do projects around here in the summer, spring and fall. But when the lake (water level) drops, that’s when we want to be up here doing these. If we can get six or seven good seawall proj-ects, that carries us over.”

Trimm also explained the parts of the project that cannot be easily seen after completion – employees installed piping and lining behind the walls to allow for drainage.

He said the seawall kept the bank from eroding from the

property into the lake. “This is expensive property,” he said. “It’s not your land anymore when it becomes mud in the water.”

Trimm said his business began in the Birmingham area in 1982 but has expanded to Logan Martin and beyond. The company has 25 full-time employees and a full-service nursery featuring plants to be used in landscaping projects.

Diane Harrison described the work done by Trimm Landscaping as “first class.”

“(Trimm) saw this vision,” she said. “We just wanted some steps to go down (to the dock). The pav-ers have done a beautiful job. They were very profes-sional; I have never seen sod laid as beautifully as this has been.”
