Letter From The Board This is my first letter to the community and I’ll be touching on a few topics that might ruffle your feathers. If so, please feel free to submit a letter of response for publication in next month’s newsletter. This is your Association folks. It was created to work for you; however it is your responsibility as a home owner and member to see that its operation is smooth and properly executed. In order for this to occur, you must get involved and give of your time where possible. If you don’t like what you see happening in your community, or if you have suggestions to bring us up another notch, join a committee. Better yet, make plans to show up at our annual meeting held in October and voice your concerns and suggestions in person. Our community won’t see positive change without your involvement. Someone once asked, “It’s said that the two greatest problems in America are ignorance and apathy. What do you think?” The answer was: “I don’t know and I don’t care.” Folks, we must be diligent not to take that position. When we take the position of ‘not caring’ or worse yet, chronic complaining without any pro-active response on our part, we leave the Association’s rules, dues and other business in the hands of the few people that do care and are involved. How well any Board manages community affairs has a huge impact on the members’ home values and community livability which is why we are urging you to get involved in your community affairs. With all of us working together, we can achieve excellence in our community. On another note, the rate of delinquency on the dues seems to have started rising again. If you get a notice in the mail regarding a late payment, don’t ignore it. These fees are not going to go away. Instead, delaying payment will only result in collection and late fees which add up fast. If you are experiencing a financial difficulty or need to make payment arrangements, please contact Alliance and you will find they are more than willing to work out a payment plan for you. In closing I want to encourage you to voice your concerns and suggestions to Alliance, our HOA management company. Be specific. We are here to work for you. Keep in mind Alliance has the responsibility to adopt policies in order to maintain a proper standard for our community and as you voice your concerns and suggestions, they will be taken into consideration in upholding the standard that has been set. You can contact Alliance by email, phone or regular mail. We look forward to hearing from you. Secretary,Thay Johnson

So, what does the budget look like for 2006 and how are we doing thus far? The Board and Officers carefully scrutinized the budget for 2006 to ensure another loss is not seen of the 2005 magnitude. As a non-profit our revenues should match our expenses each year resulting in a zero balance for profit/loss for the year.

I am sure many of you are wondering about our current financial status, especially since dues were raised. Please see the below chart for detailed information about expenses and whether we met our budget or not. A significant amount of our 2005 costs came from pool repairs caused by vandalism. As you ingest the loss of almost $8000 for our Association, I urge you to keep a watchful eye for vandals and report them immediately to the Williamson County Sheriff’s Office.

Your LDL Cholesterol should be <160Your HDL Cholesterol should be 40-60 (the higher the better)Your Triglycerides should be <150 Don’t take my word for it – check with your doctor or log on to www.americanheart.org It takes about 20 minutes to feel full after you eat? By gobbling nonstop, you may miss the signal that you’re full and overeat. Blueberries protect against heart disease and urinary tract infections. Blueberries are one of the most concentrated sources of antioxidants and a good source of vitamin C and potassium. Carrots protect against cancer, heart disease and high blood pressure. They are an excellent source of beta-carotene – just one carrot provides 10.3 milligrams. Use carrot juice as a sweet addition to smoothies, shred them over salads or eat them whole dipped in your favorite low-fat dressing. Broccoli protects against breast, colon and other cancers as well as heart disease. Broccoli contains several compounds called isothiocyanates, which ward off cancer. Broccoli is available fresh or frozen year-round and can be eaten raw, steamed, in soups, salads or with a low-fat sauce on top. (Easy on the cheese topping to maintain the health benefits of eating it) Oranges protect against cancer, heart disease, high blood pressure and birth defects. They are a rich source of vitamin C, potassium and folic acid. You can either eat them fresh or choose from a wide variety of orange juice at your supermarket. Make sure the label reads 100% juice.

EASTER Easter is April 16 and generally the final line as far as any freezes or frosts. It’s the time to get your yard in shape, welcome back to life the plants that seemed so lifeless over the winter and for planting trees, shrubs and flowers. Easter is also a time for religious celebration, Easter egg hunts and chocolate bunnies. Don’t forget to stop and check out the wildflowers as they are usually in full bloom at this time. We should be covered in blue bonnets and Indian paint brushes so take advantage of those wonderful photo opportunities with the backdrop “free of charge” from Mother Nature.

Lakeside EstatesFeeding time for the lawn:

When is the best time to fertilize your lawn? It’s best to fertilize after mowing twice since the winter break. Any time sooner and you’ll just feed the weeds. An organic approach makes for much healthier soil and foliage all around. In a recent study done by Texas A&M for the City of Austin’s Grow Green Program, organic fertilizer proved to be far more effective and non-polluting than the standard chemical varieties. Soil that is in poor health, as well as bare spots in your lawn are prime nurseries for weed seeds. Keep your soil rich and healthy with compost, manure or a little dilo dirt. Due to the warm weather we’ve already had, it’s too late for a pre-emergent; however, put that on your calendar for the upcoming fall. Iowa State University found that a natural compound found in Corn Gluten Meal inhibits weeds from germinating. Corn Gluten is an organic proven way to do this and is not only non toxic but a natural source of nitrogen to make your law green and beautiful. Mid to late March is the best time to Aerate your lawn but it’s still not too late to do so in April. Add compost before or after for even better results. Spraying your foliage with seaweed; This will increase your plants tolerance to heat, pests and make them healthier because seaweed provides trace minerals and nutrients your plants need to stay healthy. Repeat in the late fall and it will help your plants survive the winter.
