YoumusthaveadministrativerightstoinstallvSpaceServer8ontoWindows7orWindows8.However,unlikeinWindowsServer2008R2,theactual“Administrator”accountisnotenabledbydefaultinWindows7and8.So,eventhoughyoumaybelogged-inasauserthatisamemberoftheAdministratorsgroup,youstillwon’thavesufficient“administrativerights”toinstallvSpaceServer8,andtheMSIinstallerwillgenerateanerrormessagesaying:“Youneedadministrativerightstoinstallthissoftware.InstallationFailed.”

Step2–Determinewhichsessionisbeingusedbythedeviceinquestion:Underthe“L-series”sectionofthevSpaceconsole,thetechnicianwouldthenlocatethedevicebysearchingfortheWindowsLoginNameprovidedunderthe“UserName”columnoftheL-seriesdevicelist(outlinedin5.1L-seriesofthisguide).Clickatthetopofanycolumntoallowthemtosortbythiscolumntoquicklyfindtheuserinquestion.Inthisscenario,we’llassumeitwasSession2.

Step3–UsetheSessionControlstoperformthedesiredhelpdesktasks:Thetechnicianwouldthenopenthe“Sessions”sectionoftheconsole(4.1SessionOverviewand4.2SessionInformation)andleft-clickonSession2intheleftnavigationtree,revealingseveralsessioncontroloptions(4.3SessionControls)alongthetopofthescreen.Thesecontrolsallowthemtoremotelyviewandthencontrolthedesiredusersession.

7.2MaintenanceTasks-PerformingaFirmwareUpdateonanActiveDeviceInthisexample,wewillsimulateperformingafirmwareupdateonadevicethatiscurrentlyinuse.Todothisweneedtogivethecurrentuseradvancednoticeoftheimpendingupdatebeforeproceeding.ThisdemonstratestheuseofthefollowingvSpaceconsolefeatures:

TheScenario:Astheworkdaywindsdowninasmallofficeenvironment,theadministratorgetsreadytoperformfirmwareupdatesonL-seriesdevicesthroughoutthebuilding.Alloftheusershaveleftfortheday,withtheexceptionofone.TheadministratorneedstomakesurethattheuserisawareoftheimpendingdeviceupdateandrestartbeforeproceedinganddecidestousethevSpaceNC-Consoletoaccomplishthistask.

Step1–Locatetheactivesessionanditsassociateddevice.Theadministratorlocatestheactivesessionusingthe“Sessions”sectionoftheNC-Console(4.1SessionOverviewofthisguide).Ifthereweremorethanoneuserstillactive,theywouldallbevisibleinthislist.

Step2–Sendamessagetotheactivesessionwarningoftheimpendingupdate.Byselectingtheactivesession(s)foundinthe“Sessions”listandusingthe“SendMessage”button(4.3SessionControlsofthisguide),theadministratorisabletosendatextalerttotheremaininguserwarningtheuseroftheimpendingfirmwareupdateandforceddevicerestart.Thisgivestheuserenoughtimetosavetheirworkandlogout.

Step3–Performaremotefirmwareupdateonallselecteddevices.Oncetheremaininguserhasclosedouttheirsession,theadministratorisfreetoselectallofthedevicesinneedofafirmwareupdateintheL-seriesDeviceslistandperformafirmwareupdateviatheright-clickmenu(5.1L-seriesofthisguide).

TheScenario:Aschoolisaddingalabwithanadditional20-devicestotheirexistingNComputingdeployment.Toexpeditethedeploymentprocess,theywillperformasmanytasksastheycanfromthehostratherthanconfiguringindividualdevices.Step1–ConnectandConfiguretheFirstDeviceAftercreatingahostsystemwithsufficienthardwareresourcesfortheintendeduserload,andcompletingthevSpaceServerinstallationandregistrationprocessoutlinedin1.1InstallingandRegisteringvSpaceServerandError!Referencesourcenotfound.Serverofthisguide,theadministratorconnectsthefirstdevicetothehostcreatedforthislab.Thisdevicewillserveasthetemplatefortherestofthedevicesinthelab.Onceconnected,theadministratorlocatesthedevicefromthehostundertheL-seriesDevicelist(5.1L-seriesofthisguide).Theadministratorright-clicksonthedeviceandthenselects“UpdateDeviceFirmware”toinitiateafirmwareupdateontheselecteddevice.Oncethatprocessiscompleteandthedevicereboots,theadministratorcandouble-clickonthedeviceandconfigureitasdesired(5.3InformationTabthrough5.9UpdateTabofthisguide).Step2–StoretheFirstDevice’sConfigurationProfileAftercompletingtheconfigurationprocessontheselecteddevice,theadministratorcanthenright-clickonthedeviceintheL-seriesDeviceslistoftheconsoleandselect“StoreConfigurationProfile”(5.12CreatingProfilesofthisguide)tosavethisconfigurationforuseontherestofthedevicesinthelab.Step3–ConnectandConfiguretheRemainingDevicesItisnowtimetoconnecttheremainingdevices.Oncethedevicesareconnected,theadministratorcanperformafirmwareupdateonallofthemsimultaneouslybyselectingthegroupandinitiatingafirmwareupdateasoutlinedinStep3.Oncethedeviceshavecompletedtheirfirmwareupdate,theadministratorcanthenapplythefirstdevice’sConfigurationProfiletotheremaininggroupinonestepbyagainright-clickingonthegroupandselecting“ApplyConfigurationProfile”(asdescribedin5.14ApplyingProfilesofthisguide).
