Description The programme aimed to provide meritorious students from economically marginalised backgrounds the means to continue their education. The award would enable students who have finished secondary school to complete Classes 11 and 12; and for students who completed senior secondary school to pursue higher education and professional courses. Eligibility for senior secondary support was based on students obtaining 60 per cent and above in their Class 10 examination, and for higher education support, students had to score 70 per cent and above in their Class 12 examination. All successful students received a stipend, tutorial support and career guidance. To improve the success of entry into higher education courses for high performing students, the partner worked closely with colleges and universities to secure reductions in admission fees. Achievements The programme supported two cohorts: In 2008 a very ambitious intake target was set and 1,000 young people were selected for the Award. 208 students enrolled in Engineering and 183 students enrolled in other courses including Pharmacy, Science, Art and Commerce degree as well as courses in Engineering. A second cohort of 200 students was inducted in 2009 to receive support for Classes 11 and 12. All students passed their Class 12 examinations with marks of 75 per cent and above. 33 students enrolled in courses at the Indian Institute of Technology, 32 students completed a childcare degree and 45 students enrolled in courses including Nursing, Pharmacy and Teaching. The highest achieving students on the fellowship programme all chose to study Engineering, achieving the following results: Uppoju Bhargavi - 91% Meda Ravi - 90% Pandula Sravanthi - 84% 2 students from the cohort gained admission into the Indian Institute of Technology in Roorkee and Kharagpur - a prestigious national institution renowned for its engineering courses.
