    Key Stage Two

    Weekly Spelling Lists

IntroductionThis book follows on from the first book in the seriesFoundation Stage and Key Stage One Weekly

Spelling Lists. Both books provide carefullyorganised lists of spellings to be learnt by pupilseach week. If this scheme is followed fromFoundation Stage to Year 6, all phonic strands andhigh/medium frequency spellings will have beenlearned in a systematic way.

The spelling lists should be taught in class as part ofliteracy lessons (word level work). Words can bedisplayed using coloured felt tip marker pens in orderto emphasise the various patterns. The lists may bephotocopied to be sent home to learn on a weeklybasis. All lists have two spaces for childrensindividual errors which should be taken from their

    personal spelling logs.

There are additional revision lists for the more ablepupils and for less able children there are lists thatare centred around the revision of Key Stage 1objectives.

At the back of the book there are a number ofSynthetic Phonics Read and Spell ReinforcementBooks. These books are designed to support thereading and spelling of Medium Frequency Wordsusing Synthetic Phonics to aid this process.

    How to Use This Book

For Children in Year 3, Year 4, Year 5 and Year 61. The children should be given the relevant part of the diagnostic test on page 4 at the beginning of each

    term.

A guide for the sets to be tested at the beginning of the autumn term would be:

    Year 3 Sets 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9

    Year 4 Sets 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12

    Year 5/Year 6 Sets 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16

    2. If children score 7 out of 12 or more on a particular set of words they can be assumed to have secured

the sounds and patterns within that test as there is revision in subsequent sheets.

    3. Children should begin their weekly spelling work on the first set of words where their score is lower than

    7 out of 12.

    Set 4 Set 5 Set 6 Set 7 Set 8 Set 9

    Year 2 Term 1 Year 2 Term 2 Year 2 Term 3 Year 3 Term 1 Year 3 Term 2 Year 3 Term 3

    Child 3a 10 9 4 3 3 2

    Child 3b 12 12 11 9 8 4

    Child 3c 12 12 12 11 12 10

    Child 3d 3 2 - - - -

Child 3a should start on (Set 6) Year 2 Term 3 lists (found on page 14/15) because they have scored lessthan 7 for the first time.

Child 3b should start on (Set 9) Year 3 Term 3 lists (found on page 20/21) because they have scored less

than 7 for the first time.

Child 3c should now be tested on sets 10 to 15 because they have already secured all spelling patterns

covered in Year 2 and Year 3.

Child 3d should now be tested on sets 1, 2 and 3. If an appropriate set of words cannot be found following

that test, it may be necessary to give the child a word list from the Key Stage 1 Book.

Y3 Examples of scores achieved by children on the diagnostic test:

Teachers Notes Diagnostic Spelling TestEach word below should be read out aloud, put into a sentence and then re-read by the teacher.

After listening to this, the children should then individually write down the spelling in the appropriate space on

    their answer sheet.

    Synthetic Phonics with Markings Explained

Synthetic Phonic Read and Spell Reinforcement BooksThese sheets can be made into books that can be used for additional practice either in class or at home in

order to consolidate the reading and spelling of the High Frequency Words. Some of the books contain

markings. These annotations help children to read and spell the words by carefully analysing the sounds

used. Some of the books do not contain any markings and can be used to practise the spelling of the High

Frequency Words without the aid of prompts. The markings can be used when introducing new words.

The Markings Explained1. In general, Synthetic Phonics suggests that wherever possible all 26 letters should be sounded:

    e.g. just is soundedj - u - s - t

    flop is sounded f - l - o - p

    2. In this book blends are only made where absolutely necessary, e.g. ch, sh, th (as in this) and th

(as in thin). This is indicated with a marking beneath, tying the two sounds together.NB: Note the two different markings used for th.

    e.g. such is sounded s - u - ch shop is sounded sh - o - p

    this is sounded th - i - s thin is sounded th - i - n

    3. Sometimes a name is said instead of a sound. The only ones used in this book are a, e, i, o, u, y,

and r. This is indicated with a line above the letter.

    e.g. me is sounded m - e away is sounded a - w - a - y

    4. Sometimes a letter is not sounded. This is indicated with a cross above the silent letter.

    e.g. have is sounded h - a - v

    5. Sometimes a different letter is substituted. This is indicated by a cross above the letter(s) to beomitted and the letter sound to be substituted is placed in a circle above.

    e.g. of is sounded o - v

    6. In this book, Vowel Phonemes are simplified to the following and are sometimes used as

    substitutions. e.g.

ow as in cow er as in sister oo as in moon
