SHABBAT MEDITATION FIRST FRIDAY OF EVERY MONTH

On Fridays, December 2 and January 6, come and prepare your heart for Shabbat with a pre-service meditation. We meet in the Harry M. Tonkin Memorial Chapel every first Friday of the month at 7:00 pm for a 20-minute meditation. Deni Deutsch Marshall, Jewish Meditation teacher and spiritual director, introduces and guides the meditation. Both experienced and beginning meditators are welcome. No RSVP necessary.

Please join us for the third in a series of Kavanah Shabbat services on Saturday, January 21, at 10:30 am in the Harry M. Tonkin Memorial Chapel at Congregation B’nai Israel. Kavanah Shabbat is a joyous contemplative service designed to help you explore a deeper relationship with the Divine. Kavanah Shabbat blends traditional communal prayer and the chanting of the weekly parsha (Torah portion) with song, Jewish chants, silent prayer, and moments of meditation and reflection. The service will be led by Deni Deutsch Marshall, a Jewish Spiritual Director and Mindfulness teacher, accompanied by Peggy Goldstein, Elizabeth Landsberg, Sandy Lee, and Steve Marshall. Sandy Lee will also chant Torah. Kavanah Shabbat services draw on teachings from Torah, Talmud, Mussar, and Jewish meditation and mysticism to fully express Jewish spirituality on Shabbat morning. Mark your calendar for the other Kavanah Shabbat services of year 5777: March 18, April 15, May 6, and June 3. For more information, please contact the Congregation B’nai Israel office at 916-446-4861, or Deni Deutsch Marshall at 916-803-5699.

Nate Tochterman, January 7

Hello, everyone of Temple

B’nai Israel! My name is

Nathaniel Tochterman, or just

Nate. I am in 7th grade at

Sutter Middle School. I am

super excited for my

upcoming Bar Mitzvah on January 7. It is going to

be an incredible way to start the year in 2017.

Outside of school, there are multiple things I

immensely enjoy. For one I enjoy hanging out with

my pets, my cat Sugar and my dog Lola. Basketball

is my personal favorite sport, while I also enjoy

baseball and tennis. I am a huge Kings fan along

with my father and brother. I love to be active and

play several different sports throughout the year.

For this reason, I decided my mitzvah project

would be helping the Boys and Girls Club by

collecting used and new sports equipment and

gear, and if you have any lying around your house,

please let me know. I hope as many people as

possible can help my family and me by donating

supplies for this great charity. I hope to see you on

January 7!

Noah Zerbo, December 3

Hi, my name is Noah Zerbo. I am

13 years old and in 7th grade at

California Middle School. I enjoy

reading, basketball, and playing

the violin. I also like to travel and

learn new languages – right

now, I’m studying Mandarin Chinese. My mitzvah

project is helping out with Family Promise. I will be

helping underprivileged families that are staying at

our temple while they are getting back on their feet.

Please join me as I’m called to the Torah as a Bar

Mitzvah at on December 3.

Our B’nai Mitzvot

Zachary Beck, December 17

My name is Zachary Beck and I am a 7th grader at California Middle School, where I run on the cross country team. I also enjoy participating in competitions to solve Rubik’s Cube. I have an intermediate black belt in Kempo Karate. In the summer time I enjoy attending Camp Tawonga as well as spending time with my friends. For my mitzvah project I am volunteering with Family Promise at B’nai Israel. I am working with the children of homeless families and helping to make the families feel welcome. Family Promise is an organization that helps low-income families to achieve independence. B’nai Israel is hosting families for two weeks in November. Please join me for my Bar Mitzvah on December 17.

Adam Hirsch, January 14

Hi! My name is Adam Hirsch. I am in the 7th grade and I really enjoy my school, teachers, and friends. My favorite things to do include reading, video games, and spending time with my brother. I would like to thank my B’nai Israel teachers and my family for their love and support through this journey. Please join me when I am called to the Torah as a Bar Mitzvah on January 14.

Greetings from the 'hood. Wow! Chanukah is just a few weeks away. It's been awhile since the High Holidays, but I would like to relate something to everybody that may tie in with this season. We spent Yom Kippur in Amsterdam at a progressive synagogue. You learn to appreciate what you have when it is not there. No ushers to greet us at the door. No community prayer books. However, attending Kol Nidre, it struck me that every Jew all around the world was having the same experience. Though I must say not understanding the home language was only compounded by not having a prayer book. However, it was clear we were in a community. The many tallitot were not as colorful as ours, but these were people who related to each other. What I really missed was seeing Dan or Jennifer or Fran or Jon, and especially not seeing Rabbi Alfi or Cantor Steinberg. It made me realize how wonderful our community is, and during this time of rededication we all should rededicate ourselves to our congregation. When Alan calls for your help, step up. When the Brotherhood calls for help, step up. We have been busy. November was our latest Boyz Nite Out at the Rubicon. A great time was had by all. We’re catering a bar mitzvah in January, and in February we will be presenting our menu to the next b'nai mitzvah class (it's all about marketing). We will need your help, so come on down to the kitchen. Ah yes, Zevi. Well, earlier this year he told me he got a zero (0) on his math test. In fact, he got two zeroes and even a one (1) in front of them. Shael, meanwhile, is still trying to figure out why his soccer teammates weren't thrilled about the two goals he scored … for the other team. Chappy Chanukah!

President’s Message The Brotherhood

Rededicating to Our Community by Jeff Rabinovitz, President, CBI Brotherhood

Bina will have many opportunities to outline her vision and plans for the future, and to further introduce herself to the congregation. For now, I just want to extend a profound thank you to Bina for taking on such an important role. I know Congregation B’nai Israel will benefit greatly from her expertise and increased involvement.

Alan M. Steinberg, President

Introducing Our New President-Elect One of the great strengths of Congregation B’nai Israel is the active involvement of our members. We operate under a tight budget and lean staff, particularly when considering the size of our congregation and facilities. But thanks to the

generous contributions from our members of their time, efforts, and money, we continue

to thrive. When called upon, our members consistently step up and help out. And that includes the governance of our congregation. As you may know, the President-Elect position has remained unfilled since July 1. Board succession is critical to the stability of any organization. We are fortunate to have members willing to take on the responsibility of governing our congregation. So it gives me great pleasure to announce that the Board of Trustees has unanimously appointed Bina Lefkovitz as President- Elect.

As President-Elect, Bina will be on the ballot for election as our next President for the term running from July 1, 2017, until June 30, 2019. She will bring to the presidency strong organizational skills in community development, strategic planning, and fiscal management. Bina’s professional career includes founding and directing a regional youth development nonprofit organization and serving as a consultant in areas of community-based planning, school/community partnerships, and program development. Bina is active with Area Congregations Together and has served on various community boards. For B’nai Israel, she led the effort several years ago to plan our Kesher program, chaired the youth committee, helped start our Racial Justice committee, served as a member of the educator and executive director recruitment committees, and currently serves on our Board of Directors. Most importantly, Bina approaches this position with the energy and passion to serve our congregation in this leadership role. She has a strong vision to strengthen our communal bonds and congregational engagement, improve organizational efficiency, and continue with sound fiscal management.

Women of B’nai Israel

As I write this article I’m amazed at how quickly time has passed since July 1 when I officially became President of Women of B’nai Israel. It’s been such a busy time for both me and WBI.

Looking back, WBI has been involved in Happy Hour

Havdalah, Rosh Chodesh, Girls’ Night Out, S’lichot, the Rosh Hashanah Reception, and the WBI Fall Fashion show, which raised almost $1,000 for the Price Campership Fund. Several of us attended the WRJ Pacific District Convention in Las Vegas. At our annual Membership Appreciation Luncheon in November, we held a meet-and-greet for our new Temple Executive Director, Sara Freid, and her wife, Marlene Freid; honored Betty Reuben for her many years of service to WBI, CBI, and the Sacramento Community; and saw a presentation by Angie Rooney about a little-known chapter of World War II when Shanghai, China, became a haven for more than 20,000 Jews fleeing the Holocaust.

Looking ahead, we have several events planned, including another Girls’ Night Out, serving Christmas Dinner at St. John’s Shelter for Women

Find out the latest news regarding WBI, the Women of Reform Juda-ism, and the impact of our move-ment around the world. You might even see someone you know! https://www.facebook.com/CBIWBI/

and Children, hosting author Maggie Anton, and our annual Chai Tea, to name just a few.

Thanks to all the volunteers who helped during S’lichot and the Rosh Hashanah reception. WBI is so fortunate to have members willing to do whatever it takes to make sure these events are a wonderful experience for our Congregation! I especially want to thank Rachel Weinreb and Gretchen Steinberg for co-chairing the Rosh Hashanah Reception for the past several years. Both Rachel and Gretchen are now ready to pass the baton, so if you are interested in co-chairing the Rosh Hashanah reception please let me know. They’ve created a binder with step-by-step instructions to make the transition a smooth one.

If you haven’t yet renewed your membership or joined WBI, there’s still time. Contact Linda Byrne for a membership form at [email protected].

Finally, keep watching for the monthly WBI Bulletin or checking our Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/CBIWBI/) for more information on our upcoming events.

Religious School Education

Expanding Our Jewish Spirit It may be winter outside, but what better time to think about summer camp?!? Various studies have shown that the Jewish summer camp experience has a tremendous effect on children and their Jewish identity. Kids who attend a Jewish summer camp end up with an increased inclination to practice Jewish

behaviors in their lives, from lighting candles on Shabbat to performing mitzvot to seeking out experiences with Jewish friends. At Jewish camp, “Jewishness” isn’t something they are or do, but part of what takes place every day, all day.

Even more importantly, it continues what we strive to do here through our education programs. Students who enjoy what they learn and experience being part of our Jewish community here can explore and widen their sense of community in a different setting. Options for Jewish summer camp include Camp Shelanu, our day camp here at CBI, and nearby overnight options such as URJ Camp Newman and Camp Tawonga, as well as the newer URJ 6 Points Sports Academy in Southern California. Please join us on Second Shabbes – Friday, December 9 – when we will celebrate the value of Jewish camp and have representatives here to provide information and answer your questions. The fun will continue on Sunday, December 11, with camp presentations for parents and students currently in 2nd

grade and up. We encourage everyone to wear camp T-shirts and show some ruach (spirit)!

Our annual Religious School Walk-a-thon and Pancake breakfast fundraiser on Sunday, November 6 was filled with fun and activity – loved seeing everyone dressed in their funky style and exercising & eating together. I am especially grateful for the nearly $2,400 raised for the Religious School Scholarship Fund and the Weinberg Godparent Fund! Every dollar helps ensure we can provide a quality Jewish education for all students. Please remember these funds as well as the Summer Camp Scholarship Fund when making charitable gifts. Todah rabah! Let’s continue that spirit into January as we prepare for Mitzvah Day on Sunday, January 15. Each Religious School class, as well as the greater temple community, will be doing their part to make our world a better place – keep an eye out for communications about the various projects and how you can be involved.

Best, Denise Crevin, Education Administrator

BISY NEWS By Dani Wiesenthal, Communications Vice President

Shalom and Happy Chanukah! In BISY, we’ve had an amazing couple of months full of events! Several BISY and Kesher members gathered for the first Kesher shul-in on October 15-16 for a discussion focusing on possibly the most talked-about event of 2016: the elections. Attendees learned from Jewish texts about leadership, then discussed the presidential elections from our point of view as American Jews and considered how our values impact our voting. At the beginning of November, we had BISY Smash!, our “welcome back” social get-together for all new and returning BISYites. We enjoyed games, food, and lots of fun, as you would expect. Early in December, many BISY members plan to attend NFTY-CWR Fallinter, a regional event at Camp Newman focused on social justice and advocacy that includes NFTY Prom along with Jewish friends from all over the Central West Coast. We’re excited for our Chanukah shul-in beginning after Second Shabbes dinner and services on December 9. It’s going to be a great way to celebrate a favorite holiday. On January 21, we have a brand-new event - BISY Sings! We’ll be doing karaoke and singing like nobody’s watching. All 9th - 12th graders, come on and join us! Happy Chanukah and Happy New Year!

OLIVE OIL FUNDRAISER! Last year’s olive oil fundraiser for Religious School scholarships was such a great success, we are offering it again this year! $18 a bottle for certified kosher extra virgin cold-pressed olive oil from Ternero Olive Oil Company. Pre-orders begin December 4. Order yours in the office or call (916)446-4861. Oil can be picked up beginning Sunday, December 18, in the CBI office.

Religious Ethics in the 21st Century ▪ Rabbi Mona Alfi Tuesdays, January 10 and 24, Noon – 1:00 pm, Conference Room Rabbi Mona Alfi tackles some of the toughest issues of Jewish ethics as applied to modern life. We discuss politics, economics, Israel, Jewish communal relations, and many other issues. To request or suggest a topic, please e-mail Rabbi Alfi with ideas. Regular attendance is not required; drop-ins and newcomers are welcome! Bring a brown bag lunch. There is no fee. (Note: Religious Ethics will not meet in December.)

Coming Attractions – Save the Dates! Jewish Scriptures Before the Bible Professor Eva Mroczek (UC Davis) Thursday, February 2, 7:00 – 8:30 pm, Chapel The Dead Sea Scrolls revealed that Jews did not have a fixed canon of the Bible – a Tanakh – until at least the first century CE. Their sacred texts were found in different versions and continued to be expanded and revised. What’s more, they recognized a much larger selection of books as divinely revealed scripture. Can we imagine our way into a literary world before "Bible" or "Tanakh" existed as a concept?

The History and Practice of Kabbalah, Part II Rav Shula Stevens Calmann Thursdays, February 9, 16, and 23, 7:00 – 8:30 pm, Library Jewish mysticism in its earliest stages spanned a thousand-year period, and was not called Kabbalah, but rather Merkevah, or Throne, mysticism. In this second “mini-semester,” we study the major turning point at which Merkevah mysticism gives way to the beginnings of Kabbalah. We will start with a “theoretical” approach, which includes learning the history and operative concepts of this time period, and also study excerpts from its major text, the Sefer Yetzirah. We will also experience a bit of “Practical Kabbalah” through meditation and contemplation. Fee: $20 for CBI members, $25 for nonmembers.

Seder Nashim: Text and Context in a 76th Century Ladino Prayerbook ▪ Susan Aguilar

Saturday, February 25, 7:00 – 8:30 pm, Chapel

The Jewish communities expelled from Spain and Portugal in the 15th and 16th centuries faced complex challenges in creating and maintaining Jewish identity in the new locales in which they settled. A 16th century women's prayerbook, written in a combination of Ladino and Hebrew, illuminates some of the tensions faced by Sephardic diasporic communities in the Ottoman Empire, giving us a window into the ways rabbinic authorities and women negotiated their respective roles in nurturing Jewish identity.

Israel Committee Update

On Sunday October 30, the Israel Committee sponsored a very interesting and informative presentation by Eran Kaplan, Professor in Israel Studies at San Francisco State University, on Politics and Identity in Israel. Most American Jews are Ashkenazim; while American Jews have significant differences in religious practices, conflicts tend to be muted, and communal cooperation and cohesion remain strong. One reason for this is that we are a small minority in a big country. Israel is different. There, Jews are the dominant majority in a small country, but Israeli Jews are divided much more along ethnic, national ancestry, and religious lines – for example, the divide between Ashkenazi and Mizrahi (“Oriental”) Israeli Jews. Professor Kaplan reviewed how the political system and politics of Israel have evolved since the founding of the state in 1948, and, in particular, how shifts in Israeli politics over the past several decades have mirrored other developments in Israeli society (and culture) — namely, the breakdown of Israel into various (tribal) groups, whose identity, sometimes more than their ideology, tends to determine political coalitions and alliances. Special thanks to Bendan Blue and Fifi Zeff for providing refreshments after the presentation, and to Fred Dobb for coordinating the audiovisual setup. Michael Shalev Saturday, December 10, 7:00 to 8:30 pm in the Chapel Inequality and the Politics of Inequality in Israel: This presentation will discuss the main lines of economic inequality (national, ethnic, class) and how they intersect, and two of the puzzles that Israel poses: why no unified counter-movement of the disadvantaged, and what drove an exceptional case - the 2011 mass protests in which hundreds of thousands of Israelis demanded a more interventionist and redistributive state.

Winter Sanctuary

Winter Sanctuary is a rotating winter shelter for adults experiencing homelessness in the Sacramento region. From the Monday prior to Thanksgiving through March 31, houses of worship throughout Sacramento County sign up to host Winter Sanctuary at their facilities for one or several nights. Volunteers at host congregations provide shelter, meals, and fellowship, and find it rewarding to assist those experiencing difficult times.

Winter Sanctuary dates at B'nai have been tentatively scheduled for the following:

Sunday, December 4

Sunday, January 29

Sunday, March 19

Volunteers will be needed for a variety of activities when we are the host congregation. Interested people should contact Jason Weiner at [email protected] or 310-425-5917.

Habitat for Humanity's Build for Unity

In May of this year, B'nai Israel joined Build for Unity, a first of its kind effort with Habitat for Humanity. In Sacramento over 20 congregations of different faiths, as well as local businesses, have come together to raise the necessary funds and provide volunteer manpower to build two homes - from the ground up - in North Sacramento. Two Ukrainian refugee families will own the homes and will be involved in the actual construction alongside members of varying faiths in our community. It takes a community to build a community (Habitat for Humanity).

We are very excited to be part of this multi-faith project! The project started in January (2016), when congregations and businesses began forming relationships and raising funds needed to begin construction. Since then, the goal of $176K has been reached, and building of the homes began in November.

Habitat for Humanity ensures that 90% of the work of home construction is done by volunteers like us, and there will be a chance to work on everything from framing a home to landscaping at its completion!

B'nai Israel has signed up for two build days per month (three in February) with Habitat for Humanity December-February. We will have a total of 10 volunteers per day from CBI and another 10 volunteers will be from other faith groups. The workday is from 7:30 am to 3:30 pm at a site in North Sacramento. Volunteers must be age 16 or older; volunteers under 18 must be with a legal guardian at all times. All construction materials will be at the build site. B'nai Israel is signed up for the following days:

Thursday, December 8 Saturday, February 5

Wednesday, December 21 Thursday, February 9

Thursday, January 5 Friday, February 17

Thursday, January 12

Refugee Assistance Committee

All four refugee resettlement organizations in Sacramento report massive increases in the numbers of people they are resettling. Until 2013, Opening Doors (the resettlement agency CBI coordinates with) was resettling between 120 and 140 refugees per year. In the summer of 2014, Sacramento experienced the Afghani phenomenon. In 2013–2014, they were at 374 and last year 350+. This year, Opening Doors was told to expect 400 to 450 refugees.

Our CBI volunteers have been doing an incredible job of driving, donating household goods, and welcoming families to Sacramento. Recently our volunteers and members of CBI - as well as supporters in the larger Sacramento community - donated a crib, child’s bed, tables, lamps, and numerous other household items needed by an Afghani family with two young children. Their one-bedroom apartment in the Arden-Arcade area is looking more like a home, thanks to the generosity of our community. The Sayqel family was very appreciative of the donations and shared their dinner with some of our volunteers.

If you would like to donate items (new or slightly used) for our refugee families, please contact Maryann Rabovsky ([email protected]), coordinator of the CBI Refugee Assistance Committee. In addition to the Household Kits we are assembling, we are collecting books for children – chunky books for infants and books for preschoolers. Your donations will be greatly appreciated.

Update on Zlata and Ayhan Durak

Zlata and Ayhan Durak have moved to Mountain View. Ayhan got a job as a software engineer with Apple, and Zlata is working in the hospitality industry but will soon start attending IT school. They have joined a congregation near their new home "while missing so much B'nai Israel, our first home!" Zlata and Ayhan are excited to be moving on with their lives -- building a better future -- and very appreciative of the support and generosity of B'nai Israel congregants who welcomed them and made a difference in their lives.

Zlata and Ayhan will take a little bit of our synagogue with them to their new home (see photos below). Our Religious School students contributed artwork that was turned into a beautiful quilt designed by Elaine Berghausen and Susan Cox. Many thanks to our creative students, and especially to Elaine and Susan, who spent many hours thoughtfully quilting and making a special keepsake for the Duraks.

College Care Packages Are Back! By Sue Schooley

We know that care packages can make

college life a little sweeter. So we are excited to

announce that B'nai Israel is starting a new tradition

(or bringing back an old one, depending on who you

ask), "Care Packages" for college students. We just

mailed our first set of packages (see phot, below)

for Simchat Torah, to 28 students, in locations

scattered from Copenhagen to Canada. The

packages included a sweet treat, a personal note,

and cards created by the children who attended

CBI's High Holidays Apples ‘n’ Honey program.

We plan to send a few care packages a year.

If you are a CBI college student (or the parent of a

college student) who isn’t yet on our list, please

send the student's name, email, snail mail address,

college/university name, and year in school to

Sue Schooley at [email protected].

Interested in supporting us? Join the fun as

we create and assemble the packages. Again,

contact Sue Schooley. Or, if you can help underwrite

the costs of the items or the postage, please send

your tax-deductible donation check to CBI, with

"College Care Packages" in the memo section.

We are getting very excited about our amazing intergenerational CBI retreat, March 31 – April 2, 2017. Make reservations now to join us. We will all gather together at beautiful URJ Camp Newman near Santa Rosa — an easy 90-minute drive from Sacramento. The camp is ours for the weekend! Our weekend’s theme is “Building stronger intergenerational bonds.” The retreat will be a super weekend for all age groups and will be filled with food, music, dancing, meditation, arts & crafts, sports, and an awesome Shabbat service under the stars. There will be sing-alongs, delicious camp food, wonderful services with our clergy, Torah study, nature walks, athletics, adult education, and more. You can do as much or as little as you want. We are also planning for “adult time” in the evening while folks monitor the cabins after the kids go to bed, so that parents and nonparents can schmooze and relax. Plenty of time is available to bond with your family or chavurah, and to meet new CBI members. The weekend will have something for everyone!

Each family will have a private cabin for the weekend. If you would like to join us, please check the CBI website for the registration form. If you have any questions, please contact Ted London at 916-284-7277 or [email protected].

Results of 2016 Eleanor J. Marks Holocaust Essay Project

By Bernie Marks

The 8th Annual Eleanor J. Marks (EJM) Worldwide Holocaust Essay Project has come to an end, with over 500 entries from throughout California and multiple countries in Europe, including Germany, Switzerland, and Ukraine. Most Congregation B’nai Israel (CBI) Religious School students in 6th and 7th grades participated, as well as some madrichim. CBI’s co-winners are Jacob Dean, Henry Goldberg, and Ezra Hammel. Over 20 schools participated in the 2016 essay project, including new schools such as Camerado Springs Middle School, Cameron Park, CA; Katherine L. Albiani Middle School, Elk Grove, CA; Rivergold Elementary School, Coarsegold, CA; Rolling Hills Middle School, El Dorado Hills, CA; Monterey Trail High School, Elk Grove, CA; Privatgymnasium Dr. Richter, Kelkheim, Germany; and National Aerospace University, Kharkiv, Ukraine. This year many essays were submitted by students in their native languages, such as Russian, German, Chinese, and French. The project has judges in all these languages. Chief judge Nadine Muench and her team of nearly 60 judges managed to complete their difficult task on time. We thank them all for the many hours spent reading and scoring the essays. The EJM Holocaust Project provided over $4,000 in scholarship prizes to the many winners in each participating school. A special thank you to Laura Mahoney for her tireless work in editing over 500 essays for the 2016 book Children’s Voices, Volume VII, which will be published and available for purchase by the end of this year. As the 2016 project has wrapped up, we have already started the 9th Annual EJM Holocaust Essay Project. This year's theme is "Polish Heroes Who saved Jews 1939 - 1945.” As of this date most schools from the previous years are on board, and a new school district from North Fork, CA, near Yosemite, has requested to be part of the 2017 project.

Planting Trees for the Next Generation: Legacy Giving

Join us for the Legacy Shabbat Service on Friday, December 2, at 7:30 pm. The L’Dor V’Dor Legacy Circle members will be honored during the Shabbat service. A wonderful oneg will follow. The L’Dor V’Dor Legacy Circle is made up of forward-thinking people who have made provisions for a gift to our congregation in their estate plans. Methods and amounts vary, but each adds to the foundation on which our congregation rests. These donors are providing for future generations just as those who came before have done for us. Add your name to the Legacy Circle. Contact [email protected] to learn how.

Meet Todd and Jennifer Kaufman We moved to Sacramento in 1979 and soon found that Sacramento’s Jewish community is synagogue-centric. If we wanted to be part of the Jewish community, we needed to join a congregation. So, after going to B’nai Israel for High Holidays and the occasional Shabbat service or other program, we joined in 1984. B’nai Israel is part of who we are. It is our extended family, and the place where we have met many of our dearest friends. We’ve been members of an informal chavurah for many years. Both of our sons, Daniel and Jonathan, grew up going to B’nai Israel. They have since married and returned to Sacramento with their families after living other places. They joined CBI, and now our grandchildren are attending Religious School and Hebrew School

CBI Bulletin Board

here. It’s hard to believe we have become one of those multi-generational B’nai Israel families. We are deeply involved in B’nai Israel. Jennifer was in one of the earliest Adult B'nai Mitzvah classes. She served on the Board of Trustees for a long time and is a past president of the congregation. She is currently co-chair of the Religious Practices Committee. Todd and Jennifer were two of the co-chairs for the Capital Campaign. Todd has been very active as a member of the Board and served as Vice-President for Administration. He is currently the chair of the Kitchen Committee. We’ve stayed in the B’nai Israel community for 30 years for many reasons. Our clergy makes worship meaningful. We love the diversity of our congregation and its embrace of non-Jewish family members. We are proud of the emphasis our congregation places on social justice. It is our home. We’ve made B’nai Israel part of our estate plan because we want to sustain our vibrant Reform Jewish presence in Sacramento. We love having multi-generational involvement in CBI and want that to continue, not just for our family, but for everyone who wants to be part of our congregation.
