Introduction

King Tutankhamen is one of the most famous pharaohs ever to reign. He actually didn’t get too much accomplished in his ten years as pharaoh. The reason King Tut is so famous is because of his tomb. His tomb was found in almost perfect condition which interested historians and the media. King Tut is a very well known pharaoh to this day.

The Early Life of Tutankhamun

Tutankhamun’s given name was Tutankhaton which meant “Living image of Aten”

His parents were most likely King Akhenaten and Kiya

He was born during the Armana period which centered around his father

He spent his childhood in Egypt’s new capital, Armana

New Life as a Pharaoh

Akhenaten died when Tutankhaton was only eight or nine years old

Since he was so young Ay and Hermhab were though to have helped him with many decisions

One of the first actions took by King Tut was to steer his people away from the Armana relgion

He then restored the orthodox belief in the pantheon of the gods

Life As a Pharaoh Continued…

King Tut had married his half-sister, Ankhensenpaaton, who’s parents were Akhenaten and Nefertiti

After the change in the religious they changed their names to Tutankhamun and Ankhsenamun

Tutankhaten is translated to be “Living Image of Aten” but Tutankhamen means “Living Image of Amun”

At the exact moment Lord Carnarvon died all the lights went out in Cairo

King Tut’s Death

Many historians couldn’t figure out what caused King Tut’s death

In 1986, Ronald Harrison took a x-ray of King Tut’s head

They found fragments of bone inside of his skull

That lead them to believe that there could have been an injury including his head

The positioning of the injury was not an area that could be damaged accidentally

King Tut’s Death Continued…

The idea of King Tut being murdered was strongly insisted by Bob Brier

He believed that Ay (a high ranking official) had killed King Tut Ay was given the throne after King Tut’s death which would of

given him motive to get rid of Tut Ankhesenamun was forced to marry Ay after King Tut passed

away That is what gave him the right to gain leadership over Egypt Horemhab was also a suspect (He was also a high ranking official

that helped Tut with his decisions) Horemhab got the throne after Ay died and restored life back to

the traditional ways That could of given him the motive to kill Tut All evidence points to King Tut being murdered but we will never

know by who because of the many years that have gone by

The Discovery

King Tut’s tomb was found in The Valley of The Kings on November 4, 1922

It was discovered by Howard Carter and Lord Carnarvan

The digging for the tomb began on November 1st, 1921

The tomb was believed to be robbed twice because of damage they found

There were many valuables left untouched that are now in the Cairo Museum for all to view

The Discovery Continued…

The dig was intended to start on November 1, 1914 but they delayed that scheduled date because of World War I

The dig resumed in 1921 They started the dig near

Ramsies VI’s tomb hoping King Tut was buried near him

While near Ramsies VI’s tomb the workers were told to take down an old workmen’s hut which then revealed stairs

The steps were cleared and down that flight of stairs is where King Tut lied

The Robbery

Robbers broke into Tut’s tomb not too long after he was buried

They had been caught in the act and then the tomb was reorganized and resealed

Later on work men built huts over the King’s Tomb obstructing it

After that flooding caused the Tomb to be hidden for thousands of years to come

The Mummy’s Curse

After king Tut’s tomb was opened many horrible events took place which lead people to believe that it was a curse

It was said that who ever entered the tomb would be cursed by the wrath of the mummy

Lord Carnarvon funded the excavation and died shortly after the discovery

He died from the bite of a mosquito which got later aggravated by shaving. It then became infected and caused him to diem

Page 12: King Tut

Mummy’s Curse Continued

The media went crazy over Lord Carnarvon’s death. They thought it was the curse of King Tut that killed him.

Another story that surfaced was about Howard Carter’s pet canary being killed by a cobra

Howard Carter himself was not effected by “The Mummy Curse”

The Curse has not been proven true or false and is left up for you yourself to decide what you believe
