This chapter gives the introduction of DAVID BALFOUR and Mr. CAMPBELL his friend instructs him to visit him his ancestrol house “THE HOUSE OF SHAWS” in CRAMOND where his uncle “Ebenzer BALFOUR” resides. As David’s father told to Mr. Campbell , giving him a letter.

In this chapter David finally reaches Cramond but he still does not know the exact location of the “House Of The Shaws” so he keeps asking people and reaches the house. But he see’s the house in a very bad situation and hesitates to go in. But finally he kicks and blows out ”Mr. Ebenzer”. After a short time time the door is opened.

I RUN A GREAT DANGER IN THE HOUSE OF SHAWS

David finally meets his uncle. Mr. Ebenzer is a very silent man and talks less which David finds very unusual. He suddenly sometimes speaks that to for a very short time.

In the “House Of Shaws” David experiences many deathly dangers. Fortunately David is save without getting hurted. Now David starts understanding that these all were his uncle’s plan to kill him but he does not understands the reason. Therefore he straight away asks Ebenzer that why he is trying to kill him but Ebenzer says him he would tell this next morning.

I GO TO QUEEN’S FERRY

I GO TO SEA IN THE CONVENANT

The next morning David reminds his uncle of his words i.e. to explain David why he wanted to kill him. Then there is a visitor named Ransom who asks to immediately move to the dockyard. Then Ebenzer tells David to tell him about the incidents later and they leave for the Deck. But it was a cruel plan of Ebenzer to get him kidnapped on ship named “CONVENANT” and then sell him as a slave.

Now David is kidnapped and is taken to be sold on the ship Convenant. The captain of the ship is Mr. Hoseason. Mr. Riach there on the ship was helpful to him and often Ransome came to meet David and he used to critisize Mr. Shuan another person on the ship who was mostly drunken. Then David was again shifted to another room as Mr. Shuan killed Ransome and now David was given his duty. David was to be always present in the Roundhouse for Mr. Shuan’s needs.

On the tenth day, the ship accidentally due to foggy weather hit another small ship due to which all its passengers were killed except one. He was named Alan Breck Stewart. He asked the captain for help as he was running from the british soldiers and in return promised to pay his gold guinea which he kept in a money belts. They finalized the deal in sixty guineas.

The captain plans to kill Alan. David knows this, and informs Alan. A fight begins between the captain’s crew and Alan along with David. Alan and David defeat the crew, killing Shuan. Only Hoseason, Riach with some two three people left. Alan command Hoseason to take the ship Linnhe Loch.

The ship is taken to the port as told by Alan but accidently they hit a reef and is destroyed. Hence they escape with boat but soon lost each other. David reaches the land and is happy. Now he searches for life on the island.

David is upset as he is not able to find anyone. After a long search he reaches a house where he sees and old man. The old man identifies David with the silver button gave by Alan(Alan told if David shows this button in his place anyone will recognise him). After a long journey he meets another man Neil Roy who is also friend of Alan.

Colin Campbell (The King's Factor, or agent, in the Highlands). Also the enemy of Alan. David is accused for killing Colin and is fetched but suddenly Alan appears in front of him and runs fleds away with David. Both are chased by english soldiers but somehow they escape and reach a bridge which could help them to escape from the country but it is guarded by the soldiers.

The news of Colin Campbell’s murder travelled very fast. Both of them were being chased by soldiers but they didn’t lose hope and ran. Finally Alan met two men, who could take them to Clunny, Alan’s friend.

THE QUARREL

Both Alan and David go in a café and meet a girl and Alan thinks of a plan.. They go out of the café and Alan tell David how they can use the girl for there purpose. He tells that the girl can provide them with boat with the help of which they can cross the river without the bridge. David does as Alan tells and they are helped by the girl to go to Queensferry’ shore.

They reached Clunny’s house, where they were secure and Alan started playing game of cards with Clunny and lost his and David’s money. They left but both quarreled for the bidding. Finally after a long quarrel they reunited and became friends. They travelled and reached the bridge which could lead them to freedom of chasing soldiers but it was to guarded by British men.

I MEET Mr.RANKEILLOR

GOODBYE!!

In Queensferry David meets Mr. Rankeillor, the lawyer(he was there family lawyer who had the bill to give the property of Shaws to David. Ebenzer told David about Mr. Rakeillor). Daivid told all the matter to him. Then Mr. Rankeillor tells David that his uncle wanted the property for himself that is the fact he did so. Then with the help of Alan Ebenzer was tricked and made to give two third of the property to David.

When Rankeillor takes Mr. Balfour aside to settle property matters, Ebenezer agrees to give David two-thirds of the entire property of Shaws. David, Alan and Torrance celebrate the occasion with drinks. The next morning, as Rankeillor and Torrance bid the boy farewell, David's thoughts center on Alan. He would be leaving his friend in a short while. Troubled by this thought, he accompanies Alan to Edinburgh. At a chosen spot, they take leave of each other in silence, but their hearts are full of admiration for one another. It is agreed that David will either meet Alan or send a messenger to meet him every day at a particular spot until the lawyer arranges for Alan's safe departure to his home.
