Mothers occupy a very special position in the Sikh faith. The word ‘mai’ or

‘mata,’ apart from reference to one’s mother, has also acquired a hallowed

meaning in the Sikh context. All the wives or mothers of the respective

Gurus are called Mata or revered mother. For example, Mata Ganga Ji,

Mata Khivi Ji, Mata Sahib Devan Ji, Mata Gujri Ji.

Let’s use the coming Mother’s day celebrations as an opportunity to reflect

on Gurbani in relation to mothers and women in general.

In the Sikh scripture, God is

    often addressed as a par-

    ent, mostly as mother and

    father — the two parents

    being equally important.

    For example: “You are the

    mother and the father; we

    are Your children. In Your

    mercy we find profound

    happiness.”

    Similarly: “God is my moth-

er, God is my father; God

    nurtures me. God takes

care of me; I am the child

    of God. Patiently, He feeds

me; He never fails. He does

    not remind me of my

faults; He hugs me close in

    His embrace.”

    rocked! Many Thanks!!

  • It sounds like everyone had such a lovely and restful Vaisakhi break. It is hard to believe that we are

nearing the end of Kindergarten. We will certainly be busy. In literacy, we have finished up letter

sounds and have begun letter blends, such as “sh, ch, and wh.” Students are also learning to form correct sentence struc-

tures focusing on capital letters and punctuation. In math, we are continuing to learn about addition and will be reviewing

the concept of measurement such as length, capacity and mass. Our focus in science will be the season of spring, lifecycle of

insects and plants and dinosaurs. We are going to concentrate on learning Habit-7: Sharpen the Saw, which is the habit of

self renewal. Students will share different ideas on how they can sharpen their saw in daily life by staying active- physically,

mentally, emotionally and socially. Ms. Kaur and Ms. Chidley are very proud of all the creative science projects that were

presented. We would also like to remind students to continue their home reading daily.

The Kindergarten Team: Ms. Chidley and Ms. Kaur

For Literacy, we will continue to focus on our procedural and persuasive writing. Procedural texts tell the reader

how to do something, for example, how to make cookies, feed a pet, or play a game. Persuasive texts persuade the reader to do, think, or be-

lieve something; to develop ideas and supporting details in order to present a logical argument from a particular point of view.

For math, we will be focusing on our linear measurement and Geometry unit. In the linear measurement unit students will use direct or indirect

measurement to solve problems. Students will get to compare and order objects by length, height, distance, and mass(weight) by using non-

standard units, so they can make statements and comparisons. In our geometry unit, we will be focusing on describing the characteristics of 3-D

objects and 2-D shapes, and analyzing the relationships among them.

For science, we will be focusing on our Boats and Buoyancy and Magnetism unit. In the Boats and Buoyancy unit, we will be looking at material,

design, and components that are appropriate for designing a boat. In our Magnetism unit, students will be able to identify where magnets are

used and why they are used. Also to distinguish materials that are attracted by magnet from those that are not.

For social studies, we have continued learning about Meteghan, Saskatoon, and Iqaluit. We will be focusing on our third unit which is, “Looking

at Work.” Students will demonstrate an understanding and appreciation of how geography, culture, language, heritage, economics, and re-

sources shape and change Canada’s communities.

    Dear Parents,

We hope you have had a restful break! We are excited to see the students and look forward to our last few months in Grade 1!

LA: Students will refine their writing skills and focus on editing their writing. Keep practicing sequencing and inferencing with students

during home reading! Finally keep students on track with RAZ kids!

Math: Students will be wrapping up their addition and subtraction unit. We will touch on these concepts for the remainder of the year.

We will be moving into our Shapes unit where students will be learning 2D and 3D shapes.

Science: Students will begin their Plants and Animals unit. During this unit we will be going to the Zoo to learn about Canadian wildlife.

Social: Students will learn about how their families have changed over time. Students will appreciate how things have changed over

time. Students will explore how families and communities in the present have been impacted by people and events in the past. The Grade 1 Team: Ms. Raeewal & Mrs. Kaur

  • We have enjoyed a relaxing and rejuvenating Vaisakhi break! We are now refreshed and ready to continue learning and working hard for the last two months of grade three. Wow! How time flies! In literacy, we have shared our book recommendations and gathered a wonderful collection of books to read in the fu-ture, especially during our summer break. We are continuing to write descriptive texts and will focus on newspaper ar-ticles and other expository texts in May. In Math, we are working hard to finish our unit on measurement. We have looked at calendars, time, length, width, pe-rimeter and mass. We have enjoyed estimating and measuring all kinds of objects in our classrooms. Our next unit will be fractions. In Science, we have had a lot of fun with the constructing component of our “Investigating Materials and Design” unit. We have planned and constructed leprechaun traps, famous buildings and bridges. Our next unit will be “Animal Life Cycles.” We cannot wait to watch the larvae grow into chrysalises in our own classrooms, and eventually turn into beau-tiful butterflies. We will release our butterflies when they have emerged! In Social Studies, we have finished our unit on Tunisia. We will bring a special connection and knowledge to our next unit: India. Students will be looking at similarities and differences among people and communities and examine the so-cial, cultural and linguistic characteristics that affect quality of life in communities in India. We hope to experience the tastes and sounds of India on our travels, as well as explore its many different landscapes. The Grade 3 Team: Ms. Konrad and Mrs.Parhar

    G-1, 2 & 3:

Basic Level: The students will continue working on different matra words. Most of the students have shown great improvement in their Punjabi learning. The students are en-couraged to practice writing and reading matra words at home every day for at least 15 minutes. The parents are requested to check their agenda and Punjabi notebooks for their homework and help them complete all the assigned work as this is counted for marks.

Advanced Level: The higher level students will continue working on comprehending Punja-bi text, Punjabi vocabulary, reading strategies and writing practice. We will focus on the right sentence structure along with correct spellings of words in the sentences. The par-ents are requested to give them 5 words every day to practice framing good sentences with versatile vocabulary. In Gurmat, the students will be memorizing next pauris of Japji Sahib patth. The parents are requested to help them in memorizing Gurbani every day.
