Amongst other problems in the world like corruption, terrorism, unemployment, poverty; many human beings suffer from low self-esteem, depression, stress, unhappiness, disease. The latter have most negative impact on those who suffer, yet easier to tackle but easy only for those who have the key. In the competitive world, globally organizations are finding ways to increase profitability, improve customer satisfaction, better business results. Lots of tools and techniques are being deployed to enhance productivity. However, research study on productivity 308 organizations done by researchers from University of Sheffield across 22 years concluded that traditional operations programs like “TQM” and “Just in Time” were sometimes found to improve productivity in one company or another but no overall performance effect was found when organizations were looked at in aggregate. So what improves performance? – Programs that are implemented to empower employees; improve their health and happiness index. So in a way, it will not be wrong to say that Heathy and Happy employees = Productive employees = Happy Customers = Business Growth. While a lot is being done in space of employee satisfaction but their effects are seen to be secondary. What organization really need today is to consider Health and Happiness a serious competitive advantage. Health hazards alone impacts organization’s productivity – increased absenteeism, shrinkage, insurance premiums, employee turnover. As per one of the studies done at Cornell University, companies that approach health and productivity program as their business strategy achieved better financial outcomes with higher total return to shareholders and revenue per employee. How do you or your organization tackle this issue? Does employee holistic wellbeing on the radar of your CEO and leadership team? Every initiative and strategy has to start with communication and creating awareness within the organization. It’s important for all workforce to understand the concept of “Mind and Body” being one system and how they can effectively uses these resources already available to them. It requires no budget approvals to start action. All that it needs is Leadership attention and buy in.
