RELIEF CAMP - 1

1. NAME OF THE DISTRICT: Ernakulam

2. BLOCK/TALUK: Paravur Taluk

3. NAME OF THE VILLAGE/ PANCHAYAT: Manjaly

4. NAME OF THE RELIEF CAMP: Unnimishiha Church, Manjaly,

Thelathuruthu, Ernakulam-683520, Kerala

5. LOCATION: Manjaly is a small village in Ernakulam district, Kerala, India.

The small town is connected with Manjaly Bridge in the Airport road

connecting North Paravur (NH66) and Nedumbassery (NH47).

6. NO. OF PERSONS/FAMILIES AFFECTED

Eighty families are affected in this area and fourteen families are worst affected in this

locality. There are four hundred people who were affected by the heavy flood in this

area.

7. PRESENT SITUATION OF THE VICTIMS

They were shifted to Akara Manjaly (to the Parish Church) as it was only the possible

location for relief camp. The Akara Manjaly accommodates eight hundred people and

Ekara Manjaly has a population of two hundred people who are staying in the camps

due to the flood. Most of the houses were concrete buildings which were flooded with

water. Damaged is mostly done to the sanitation system (attached bathroom-toilets). As

reported damage has been done to the walls as cracks have appeared on the walls due to

water stagnation. A few houses in the locality which had tiles on roof have collapsed

totally. Most of the houses were not able to shift the home appliances and furniture to

safe places and they have been lying in the water. The houses which had reared cows,

goats, and chickens for livelihood were unable to shift them to safe places and witnessed

a total damage to the livelihood animals and birds. As the water has begun to subside

some families have left the relief camps and come to their own homes. They are trying

to clean up the houses filled with mud, sand and waste. It is also reported that many

houses which had attached bathroom toilets face the problems of caused by safety tanks

filled with water. Human waste has entered the houses through attached toilets. Most of

the houses had a two wheeler which were damaged due to water logging.

As the place in Thelathuruthu has access to make assess the damage done to the

property and livelihood, Fr. Sunil has reported the following data regarding

Thelathuruthu village under Manjaly. Among the severely affected eighty houses (80),

twelve (12) houses have been fully damaged and uninhabitable at present. There are

thirty eight (38) houses which have been partially damaged by the floods. Sixty two (62)

families have lost their home appliances like fridge, Television, washing machine, mixer

grinder etc. The livelihood animals and birds have also been lost in the floods: Twenty

two (22) cows, Twenty six (26) Goats, 15000 broiler chickens etc. Seven (7) stationary

shops have been damaged with goods and materials. Twenty Seven (27) motor bikes,

Sixteen (16) Cars, Twenty four (24) bicycles have been damaged due to water stagnation

inside the vehicles. Fifteen families who have cultivated rice have faced complete loss of

the agriculture produce. Thirty seven (37) families have reported damaged to their

water and sanitation facilities. Seventy (70) school going children from eighteen (18)

families have reported loss of school and educational materials, text books and

uniforms.

8. DETAILS OF THE ACTIVITIES UNDERTAKEN BY SKP

Manjaly was the first place to be affected place under in Paravur block. On August 16th

Morning the Ayroor Community received the information of flood in Thelathuruthu

and about the people who were gathered in the Thelathuruthu Church. The Carmelite

Fathers reached breakfast in the morning to the camp on the first day. As the place was

unable to contain such a big number of people, it was decided to shift them to Akara

Manjaly. About eight hundred people were shifted to the relief camp in the Akara

Manjaly Church, which belongs to another parish under the care of the diocesan

priests. Many voluntary organizations have come up with food and water supply to this

camp. Carmelite fathers also supplied food (three sacks of rice, vegetables, clothes (bed

sheets) and cleaning materials to this camp. Fr. Sunil has been helping out the people

from Thelathuruthu during the flood days.

9. ACTION PLAN FOR REHABILITATION

1. Ongoing assessment, evaluation and monitoring

2. Identifying different roles and resources of affected communities and families

3. Coordination between government and affected people and communities

4. Measures to reduce the vulnerability to the affected families, individuals

(Physical and Psychological).

5. Identifying the structural safety of the building that were under the water for

more than five to six days

6. Identification of buckled walls and floors

7. Provision of safe drinking water as the wells and other sources of water have

been contaminated with the sewage and other pollutions

8. Providing safety equipments (Gloves, Masks, Squeegees, Unscented detergent

etc) and materials for the cleaning of the houses already filled with sliths and

mud

9. Providing skilled and unskilled masons, carpenters, plumbers, electricians for

repairing the damage house, electrical and sanitation works.

10. Assisting in cleaning up the houses which have been totally demolished by the

heavy floods

11. Providing precaution medicines to prevent the spread of water born diseases like

cholera, dengue fever, etc

12. Assisting family members and the village in removing the waste and debris of

animals that might have entered the houses the village premises.

13. Providing immediate clothes and sanitary items to women and young girls till

they are in a position to buy it with their own resources.

14. Assistance in getting access to all government schemes for rehabilitation

15. Assistance in procuring alls the essential documents that might have been

damaged/lost during the floods.

RELIEF CAMP – 2

1. NAME OF THE DISTRICT: ALLAPUZHA

2. NAME OF THE BLOCK: AMBALAPUZHA

3. NAME OF THE VILLAGE/PANCHAYAT: Pallichira

4. NAME OF THE CAMP: St. Antony’s Church Pallichira (The people of

the Pallichira village is accommodated in various relief camps in Thottapally)

5. LOCATION

Pallichira East is a small Village/hamlet in Ambalappuzha Block in Alappuzha District

of Kerala State, India. It comes under Purackad Panchayath. It belongs to South Kerala

Division. It is located 13 KM towards South from District head quarters Alappuzha. 141

KM from State capital Thiruvananthapuram. Pallichira East is surrounded by

Champakulam Block towards East, Alappuzha Block towards North, Veliyanad Block

towards East, Harippad Block towards South. Alappuzha, Changanassery ,

Kanjikkuzhi , Chengannur are the nearby Cities to Pallichira East. This Place is in the

border of the Alappuzha District and Pathanamthitta District. Pathanamthitta District

Pulikeezhu is east towards this place. It is near to Arabian Sea.

6. NO. OF PERSONS/FAMILIES AFFECTED

Twenty six families and one hundred and five people were affected in this area where

the Carmelite Fathers look after the Church belonging to the diocese of Alappuzha.

7. PRESENT SITUATION OF THE VICTIMS

All the people of the Pallichira belonging to the place where the Latin Church is located

have been evacuated and sent to various relief camps in Thottapally. A family has

members working as government employees and others work as daily labourers.

Women of the families’ works as sweet homemakers or work in the paddy fields when

there is cultivation. Twenty boys and girls of the village are attending schools and

colleges. All the houses of the village of Pallichira are under water till the roof level (as

reported). Most of the houses are not plastered from outside and they are (bricks)

soaked in the water for the last four days. Most of the houses have sanitation facilities

outside their houses and the flood has turned them to unusable when the water subsides.

Damage has been done to electrical works, house appliances and vessels. As there was

no proper warning many had to move to the relief camps leaving their clothes and

dresses at home which has been washed away water heavy water flows.

8. ACTIVITIES UNDERTAKEN BY CARMELITE FATHERS

The Ambalapuzha Ashram reached out to the relief camp for three days with cooked

food, vegetables 35-40 Kg, clothes (lungi, nighties, towels, bed sheets) candles (One Box)

and match boxes (One Box). As the people are residing in other relief camps they have

been also assisted with the necessary materials donated by the panchayats and other

voluntary organizations.

RELIEF CAMP – 3

1. NAME OF THE DISTRICT: Pattanamthitta

2. NAME OF THE BLOCK/TALUK: Pulikeezhu Block

3. NAME OF THE RELIEF CAMP: St. Francis Xavier’s Church, Parumala,

Pathanamthitta-689626, Kerala

4. LOCATION

Parumala is a small Village/hamlet in Pulikeezhu Block in Pathanamthitta District of

Kerala State, India. It comes under Kadapra Panchayath. It belongs to South Kerala

Division . It is located 33 KM towards west from District head quarters Pathanamthitta.

4 KM from Pulikeezhu. 121KM from State capital Thiruvananthapuram. This Place is

in the border of the Pathanamthitta District and Alappuzha District. Alappuzha

District Chengannur is East towards this place.

5. NO. PERSONS/FAMILIES AFFECTED: 295 families and 1273 persons

6. PRESENT SITUATION OF THE VICTIMS

Among the 300 hundred houses under the care of the Camelite Fathers are under water.

Five houses which is situated near the parish church is not affected by the recent floods

in Kerala. The people belonging to this area are staying in two camps. One in the Lower

primary School of the parish (this camp accommodates hundred people) and the other

in Parumala Orthodox Church which conducts quite a big camp – about thousand

people have been put in this camp. At the reporting time the people are still in the

camps as they are unable to return to their homes as still water has not reside though

the rain has stopped.

7. ACTIVITIES UNDERTAKEN BY CARMELITE FATHERS

The Carmelite Fathers are coordinating with other voluntary organizations and the

Orthodox Church to bring relief materials from other places. The Carmelite Fathers

have distributed the relief materials like vegetables (35 Kg) candles (15 Packs) Packed

drinking water (5 pack of 12 each) Bread (50), Biscuits (50), Bed sheets (50). Except for

the cloth materials the food materials were distributed by the Carmelite fathers for

alternative three days in Parumala.

RELIEF CAMP: No. 04

1. NAME OF THE DISTRICT: ERNAKULAM

2. NAME OF THE BLOCK/TALUK: PARAKKADAV BLOCK

3. NAME OF THE RELIEF CAMP: JUAN JYOTHI ASHRAM

4. LOCATION:

Ayroor is a small Village/hamlet in Parakkadav Block in Ernakulam District of Kerala

State, India. It comes under Kunnukara Panchayath. It belongs to Central Kerala

Division . It is located 30 KM towards North from District head quarters Kakkanad. 4

KM from Parakkadavu. 234 KM from State capital Thiruvananthapuram.

5. NO. OF PERSONS/ FAMILIES AFFECTED: 54 persons and nine

families

6. PRESENT SITUATION OF THE VICTIMS

The Monastery of the Carmelite Fathers located near the Chalakudi river

accommodated about 54 persons for five days in its first floor as the water level had

gone till about nine ft. The Monastery accommodated about nine families of 36 persons

in its first floor and the food and water was supplied by the monastery to all the

members who were accommodated in the monastery. There was a baby of ten months

and an old man of 89 years. At present as the water has subceded the families have gone

to their homes to clean it up and to make liveable.

7. ACTIVITIES UNDERTAKEN BY THE CARMELITE FATHERS

Thirty six persons belonging to nine families of the neighbourhood of different age limit was

accommodated and provided food, medicine and shelter for five days when the water level

increased in the locality.

RELIEF CAMP: 05

1. NAME OF THE DISTRICT: ALAPPUZHA

2. NAME OF THE BLOCK/TALUK: AMBALAPUZHA

3. NAME OF THE RELIEF CAMP: ST. JOSEPH’S ASHRAM

4. LOCATION

5. PRESENT SITUATION OF THE VICTIMS

St. Joseph’s Ashram: This camp accommodated a group of 55 (fifty five) members: 4

(four) fathers, 26 (Twenty six) brothers, 1 (one) household worker and 7 (nine) families

of 24 members. They have been staying together for the last four days and are not in a

position to leave the camp for their homes as their houses are still under the water.

6. ACTIVITIES UNDERTAKEN BY THE CARMELITE FATHERS

The people who are staying in the Ashram are provided with all the food and necessary

materials like our fathers and brothers. The meals include:- breakfast in the morning,

lunch, tea and dinner. Necessary clothes and medicines have been supplied to the

members of the camp from the community

7. ACTION PLAN FOR THE REHABILITATION

As the report of the increase in level of water has been received in Kuttanad, Thakizhi

and other adjacent places till 21-08-2018, a plan cane set only in a later stage.
