Kottas on Dressage is a distillation of the practice and philosophy of one of the most highly regarded international

trainers of the current era.

Having stressed the need for the rider to establish correct posture and a thorough understanding of the aids before attempting to train the horse, the book highlights the value of establishing rapport with the horse and enhancing his mental responses and developing his physique with groundwork before progressing to work under saddle. The text then focuses on thorough, incremental development of the basic gaits, explains the value and execution of the lateral exercises and introduces advanced work including tempi changes, pirouettes, piaffe and passage. A number of commonly encountered problems are analysed, and remedies offered.

Underpinning the whole text is the author’s fundamental stance on horses and training:

‘I always see the horse as a partner. He must be trained slowly and patiently.’

Arthur Kottas

Kottas on DressageArthur Kottas-Heldenberg with Julie Rowbotham

Accepted as an Eleve (trainee) in the Spanish Riding School of Vienna in 1960, the talent of Arthur Kottas was soon

recognised and he rose rapidly under the tutelage of Colonel Alois Podhajsky to become the youngest ever First Chief Rider in the history of the School. He became an Assistant Rider in 1964, a Rider in 1969, Chief Rider in 1981 and in 1983 Riding Master. From 1995 until retiring from the School in 2002 he was First Chief Rider. He is a rider and trainer of the highest international repute and has successfully trained many horses and riders up to Olympic standard. Having retired from the Spanish Riding School in 2002, Arthur is in great demand as a trainer internationally and is a fervent advocate of true classical horsemanship, passing on his unequalled experience to the next generation of riders and trainers.

Julie Rowbotham trained with Arthur Kottas-Heldenberg in Vienna for fifteen years, progressing from Novice level

to Grand Prix.

The Keen Foxhunter’s Miscellany is an intriguing collection of hunting lore with three hundred and fifty entries covering all aspects of fox

hunting from yesteryear to the present day. Filled with an abundance of fact, fiction and quirky tales, this is a well researched and entertaining title, which is easy to dip in and out of.

Everything to do with fox hunting is here, including profiles of hunting eccentrics such as ‘Mad’ Jack Mytton (who was so obsessed by his appearance that he owned 150 pairs of breeches) and Harry, Marquis of Hastings, whose tendency to arrive on the field two hours late and sozzled made his brief Mastership of the Quorn a disaster.

The Keen Foxhunter’s MiscellanyPeter Holt

The author, Michael Clayton, ex-editor of Horse & Hound, rode with the Belvoir for 30

years and has written this brilliantly illustrated review, describing the fascinating history of the hunt from 1730 to present day. Changing from stag to fox hunting in the mid 18th century, the hunt has always been supported by the Manners family, the Dukes of Rutland, who have upheld the old English type of hound right to this day at their Kennels at Belvoir Castle.

Illustrated throughout by pictures, photographs and anecdotes, this is a definitive history of one of the most prestigious foxhound packs in the country and will enthral the ardent follower – indeed the whole hunting community.

Peter Holt is a former Fleet Street columnist who spent much of his career writing for the

London Evening Standard during the 1980s. His previous books include In Clive’s Footsteps, a travelogue on the trail of his ancestor Lord Clive of India.

Praise for The Keen Shot’s Miscellany:‘...Draws from a bewildering array of sources to assemble seemingly random data for the shooter’s entertainment and enlightenment...a great deal of effort has gone into Holt’s book.’

Elizabeth O’Beirne-Ranelagh has bred more than 30 foals while pursuing a career first in publishing and then in

conservation. She currently works as a Farm Conservation Adviser for the Farming & Wildlife Advisory Group and gives workshops and talks on horse pasture management.

Fit for the BitA Guide to Care of the Horse’s MouthMaggie RaynorAntony de Csernatony

F it for the Bit is a comprehensive study of

the horse’s mouth, outlining clearly in text and pictures its structure and growth, and the development of the teeth from birth to old age. Emphasis is on the vital fact that because adult equine teeth – unlike those of humans – continue growing throughout life, it is essential for them to be treated regularly by a qualified Equine Dental Technician (EDT). The writer and illustrator show that without such professional attention the teeth of the domesticated horse can develop problems which may affect both its nutrition and the way in which it responds to the bit. The book also includes an explanation of conformational abnormalities, and describes remedial treatment. New in both concept and application, Fit for the Bit brings an inspired blending of expertise to a most important aspect of equine health.

It explains the general principles of instruction and the practicalities of taking both mounted and dismounted lessons. It covers school movements and exercises, preliminary work over poles, and jumping, as well as preparation for competitions. There is advice on giving lectures, and organising games, quizzes and other activities.

Pilates for EquestriansLiza Randall

Pilates is an invigorating and proven body conditioning method which helps to strengthen the core muscles used in riding and

restores the body’s balance. It is a form of exercise which is being taken up by more and more sportsmen and women and its benefits can be seen to improve posture, muscle tone and to provide stability for the pelvis and shoulders - essential for the rider.

Increasingly riders are discovering the benefits that Pilates can bring to their sport. Importantly, it can help improve a rider’s results to give them that winning edge which, at the top level, can be the difference between triumph and disaster.

Dressage riders achieve better harmony with their horse as a tweak of a muscle by the rider can convey a subtle, but effective message to the horse. Eventers or showjumpers can, after a few short weeks, improve their balance over a fence, becoming more effective in their seat and are at an advantage and more tuned in to their horse should it decide not to go where intended! Pilates is an essential tool for improved, more effective and ultimately safer riding.

If you are looking for a serious dressage handbook, then this is

definitely not the book for you! What you do get is a sideways look at the world of dressage from an author who has spent four decades riding and teaching. In a uniquely

chaotic style and over one hundred entries, Bill Woods sets out to unscramble many of the myths and urban legends that have become set in stone and entertains readers along the way with his own tales and experiences. The book is one of a kind and deserves a place on the bookshelf of every dressage enthusiast.

234 x 156 mm, 112 pages, colour photographs & diagramspaperback, 978-0-9561071-1-4, PC £14.99

Riding across the country, whether it is hunting, eventing, hunter trials or just being out in the country is one of the most exhilarating experiences a rider can have with their pony or horse. There is always the sense of excitement of the unexpected, the bigger than normal fence, the uncertainty of direction

or line to be taken. To make the most of this experience, Eric Smiley believes it is important to understand what makes it all such fun, and for both the horse/pony and rider to be prepared.

Eric Smiley presents an excellent straightforward guide to cross-country with colour photographs and specially commissioned artwork throughout.

‘Although this is a Pony Club publication, there is something for everyone. What elevates this book above others about cross-country is its attention to rider thought processes and psychology. Why do we ride differently at competitions than we do at home? What effect does this have on the horse and how can we overcome this? With short digestible chapters and well thought out illustrations, it should earn its place on the bookshelves of all aspiring cross-country riders.’
