ISRAEL UPDATE - DECEMBER 18, 2020 Iranian Regime Kidnaps, Kills JournalistOn Dec. 12, Iran executed Ruhollah Zam—a courageous journalist the regime lured from France, kidnapped in Iraq, and spirited to Tehran. In 2017, Zam’s writing helped inspire national protests over the country’s dire economic situation. Zam criticized the regime’s choice to sacrafice the basic needs of the Iranian people in order to prop up the Assad regime in Syria. The executation is the latest in a long history of Iranian dissident killings, including hundreds of journalists and last summer’s killing of champion wrestler Navid Afkari. The United States and all civilized nations must continue to condemn Iran’s human rights abuses and stand with the Iranian people opposed to the brutal theocratic regime. The U.S. has previously sanctioned individuals and entities involved in such executions and should continue to do so. All other nations that champion human rights should do so as well.
