KC also dropped its August 12 contest to the Marlins, 1-0 in 10 innings, when it entered the day at 62-54. LIGHTS OUT ‘PEN--While Francisley Bueno, Louis Coleman and Donnie Joseph may not exactly be household names yet, all three starred in last night’s series opener...the three relief pitchers retired all 11 men they faced, which included 7 strikeouts in 3.2 innings of work...Joseph, who had never faced the Tigers before last night, fanned Prince Fielder, Victor Martinez and Andy Dirks in succession in the eighth inning... Bueno pitched out of a first-and-third jam in the fifth inning and recorded a pair of strikeouts in the sixth, while Coleman set the side down in order in the seventh...the three young relievers helped KC continue its hold on the top bullpen ERA in the American League (2.57), trailing only Atlanta’s Major League-leading mark (2.35)...if the current ERA holds up over the final 15 games of the season, it would be the second-best A.L. pen since 1982, with Oakland’s 2.35 relief ERA in 1990 ranking better...the Royals relief corps also leads the league, holding opponents to a .221 batting average. SALVY ES EN FUEGO--All-Star catcher Salvador Perez continued to swing a hot bat in the middle of the Royals order last night, collecting two hits and driving in two of KC’s three runs...dating back to August 23, Salvy has driven in a Major League-best 22 runs, while hitting .394 (26-for-66), which is also the top average in baseball... Perez’s power numbers have also taken off in recent weeks as he has 4 doubles, 6 homers, a .727 slugging percentage and a 1.144 OPS in his last 19 games. STAFF MAINTAINS TOP ERA--Despite allowing 5 earned runs last night, the Royals held onto the American League lead in ERA at 3.53, bettering Oakland in the No. 2 spot at 3.61...should the club be able to maintain its earned run average over the final 15 games of the season, it would be the lowest by a Royals team since the World Champion club posted a 3.49 ERA in 1985. LIGHTS, CAMERA, ROYALS--The Royals and Fox Sports Kansas City announced that the cable station is adding three games to its telecast schedule – Sunday, September 22 vs. Texas; Saturday, September 28 at Chicago White Sox and Sunday, September 29 at the White Sox...the additions ensure that all 15 of KC’s remaining games will be televised as the Royals battle for a playoff berth...along with the three additional games on Fox Sports Kansas City, MLB Network will televise the Saturday, September 21 game vs. Texas as well as tonight’s contest. Royals vs. Tigers Detroit took the opener of this three-game set last night, nar- rowing KC’s lead in the season series to 9-8, while the Royals are 3-5 here this season...the Royals lead the all-time ledger by a slim 304-301 margin, with a 144-160 deficit in Detroit, specifically, 57-68 here in Comerica Park. THE CENTRAL--Santana has pitched well against divisional opponents this season, going 4-3 against the A.L. Central with a 2.20 ERA (15 ER in 61.1 IP) and a .185 batting average...his ERA vs. the division ranks second to Anibal Sanchez (1.93) among hurlers with at least 50.0 innings, while his opponents’ average is the lowest. VS. DETROIT--Ervin has a 7-3 mark and a 3.26 ERA in 12 starts against the Tigers (29 ER in 80.0 IP)...he was dominant in KC’s first game after the All-Star Break, holding Detroit scoreless on 2 hits and a walk over 7.1 innings in a 1-0 win on July 19...all 3 of his losses to Detroit have come here at Comerica Park, where he’s 3-3 with a 5.02 ERA. ROAD WORK--Santana has put up slightly better numbers on the road, posting a 4-5 record and a 3.26 ERA (31 ER in 85.1 IP), compared to a 3.42 ERA at home...he’s held the opposition to a .206 batting average (65-for-315) in their parks, which ranks fourth in the A.L., while his road ERA is 12th in the league...Ervin is 50-47 with a 4.76 ERA away from home in his career. SOUR START TO SERIES IN MOTOWN--After falling behind early, the Royals had chances to rally, but dropped a 6-3 decision here in Detroit to open this crucial three-game set...coming into play Friday, KC trailed Tampa Bay by 2 1/2 games for the American League’s final Wild Card playoff bid, however the Royals’ loss coupled with the Rays win in Minnesota has dropped KC to 3 1/2 back with just over two weeks remaining in the regular season...Friday night, the Tigers used a Prince Fielder two-run homer to break a 1-1 tie in the fourth inning and then put the game out of reach with three runs in the fifth off KC starting pitcher Bruce Chen, who was facing Detroit for the second time in six days...despite a 6-1 deficit after five, the Royals fought back in the sixth with back-to-back RBI hits from Billy Butler and Salvador Perez...Perez also drove in KC’s first run in the fourth inning, marking his third multi-RBI game of September and eighth since August 17...trailing by three in the eighth, the Royals loaded the bases with consecutive one-out walks and a hit batsman...however, Tigers closer Joaquin Benoit fanned David Lough to end KC’s best chance to tie the game...the Royals’ bullpen was masterful, retiring all 11 batters it faced, which included 7 via strikeout...the loss marked the second time that the Royals were foiled in their attempt to reach season-best 9 games over .500... KC also dropped its August 12 contest to the Marlins, 1-0 in 10 innings, when it entered the day at 62-54. LIGHTS OUT ‘PEN--While Francisley Bueno, Louis Coleman and Donnie Joseph may not exactly be household names yet, all three starred in last night’s series opener...the three relief pitchers retired all 11 men they faced, which included 7 strikeouts in 3.2 innings of work...Joseph, who had never faced the Tigers before last night, fanned Prince Fielder, Victor Martinez and Andy Dirks in succession in the eighth inning...Bueno pitched out of a first-and-third jam in the fifth inning and recorded a pair of strikeouts in the sixth,

while Coleman set the side down in order in the seventh...the three young relievers helped KC continue its hold on the top bullpen ERA in the American League (2.57), trailing only Atlanta’s Major League-leading mark (2.35)...if the current ERA holds up over the final 15 games of the season, it would be the second-best A.L. pen since 1982, with Oakland’s 2.35 relief ERA in 1990 ranking better...the Royals relief corps also leads the league, holding opponents to a .221 batting average. SALVY ES EN FUEGO--All-Star catcher Salvador Perez continued to swing a hot bat in the middle of the Royals order last night, collecting two hits and driving in two of KC’s three runs...dating back to August 23, Salvy has driven in a Major League-best 22 runs, while hitting .394 (26-for-66), which is also the top average in baseball...Perez’s power numbers have also taken off in recent weeks as he has 4 doubles, 6 homers, a .727 slugging percentage and a 1.144 OPS in his last 19 games.STAFF MAINTAINS TOP ERA--Despite allowing 5 earned runs last night, the Royals held onto the American League lead in ERA at 3.53, bettering Oakland in the No.
