Weighted Grades Beginning with the 2011-2012 school year, Assumption will also report a WEIGHTED GPA on the transcript according to the follow scale. Junior Year is ESSENTIAL to the college process!!

This is a great time for them to begin dreaming about what they want out of the college process.

Encourage them to begin researching colleges as they dream.

Visiting colleges as a junior is extremely important to the process of determining which schools/types of schools feel like a fit.

AHS College Visit Policy

Juniors are allowed a college visit during Mission Week– Thursday, March 1, 2012.

Seniors have two college visit options:– Testing Day in October– One excused college visit of her choice as long as

school policy is followed

Both juniors and seniors are encouraged to use AHS scheduled days off to visit colleges. Spring break is a great time!

Four Important Goals for Juniors

Strive for your best possible grades. Choose an appropriately challenging senior

course load. Make at least one visit before senior year. Have two standardized test scores

(ACT/SAT) by the end of junior year.– ACT is a graduation requirement.– Those interested in Governor’s Scholars should

take the September 10 or October 22 ACT and/or the October 1 SAT.

Your Daughter’s AHS College Counselor

Leigh Jackson works with all juniors and seniors regarding the college process.

In January I will meet with all juniors in junior English classes to kick-off the process.

Encourage her to check her email. Encourage her to email her counselor or to

make an appointment in guidance if she would like a personal meeting before the spring semester. I will meet with juniors individually beginning in March.

JUNIOR ACTSBASIC REQUIREMENTS

• Serve 15 hours of justice related–service• Complete web page assignments• Complete in-class assignments

DEADLINES:

Commitment Form:– 1st semester Catholic Social Teaching:

Before beginning service, no later than September 1.– 2nd semester Catholic Social Teaching:

Before beginning service, no later than January 23.

Mid-Service Assignment:– 1st semester Catholic Social Teaching:

After seven hours of service, no later than October 4– 2nd semester Catholic Social Teaching:

After seven hours of service, no later than March 6

First Seven Hours Completed:– 1st semester Catholic Social Teaching: October 4– 2nd semester Catholic Social Teaching: March 6

Last Eight Hours Due:– 1st semester Catholic Social Teaching: December 8– 2nd semester Catholic Social Teaching: May 16

BASIC POLICIES

Student’s hours must be completed at one agency and focus on one issue

Students must work directly with people affected by the issue

Service hours must be turned in on AHS timesheet– agency signatures– no copies– no multiple names

GRADING & LATE POLICIES

Each of the 15 hours is worth ten points (150 points total) and is counted in the major category.

Service performed without a commitment sheet on file will result in a 10% penalty for any hours completed before submitting a signed commitment form.

If a student has completed her service hours by the due date but does not turn in her timesheet on the due date, she will receive a 10% penalty.

This is not an “all or nothing” project. Partial hours need to be turned in by the due date. Only hours turned in by the due date get full credit.

For the first seven hours: If a student does not actually complete hours until after the due date and turns them in by October 20 for first semester students or by March 15 for second semester students, she will receive 50% of the credit.  After those dates, the student will receive no credit.

For the last eight hours: If a student does not actually complete hours until after the due date of December 8 (1st semester) or May 16 (2nd semester), she will receive 50% of the credit. After that, the student will receive no credit, even those students who completed their hours before the original deadline.

MISSION WEEK

SENIORS HAVE CHOICES regarding how they want to experience mission week. Choices include:1. Mission trip:

• traditional national mission trips to sites within the region,• an international trip to Jamaica,• A Native American site.

2. Senior retreat3. Combination of on-campus & off-campus activities

WHY ALERTING YOU NOW?

Cost factor may warrant advanced planning:– Cost is currently $300 - $1400 based on the site

for the mission trips, $125 for Crossroads retreat, and Assumption retreat is $175.

– The Mission Team offers some fundraising. Parents being informed will enhance

discussions with daughters about their options and with decision-making.

What is the School-to-Career Program?

The School-to-Career Program is a four-year program that helps prepare students for college and a career past high school.

 Components of the School-to-Career Program Grade 9: Career Awareness (Learning Styles)

Grade 10: Career Exploration and Service-based Learning (Career Assessment and ACTS)

Grade 11: Career Preparation (Interest Profiler and Job Shadowing Experience)

Grade 12: Career Planning (Myers Briggs Personality Inventory)

JUNIOR JOB SHADOW EXPERIENCE

Students will shadow Tuesday or Wednesday during Mission Week.

Students and parent(s) decide on the job shadow contact, make the connections and provide transportation for a minimum 6 hour experience.

Consult your daughter’s English syllabus for exact details.

Parent signature verifies that student has contacted

shadow person and is agreement for student shadowing him/her. This signature also grants permission for the college day visit on Thursday of Mission Week. This completed permission slip is turned in to English teacher for a grade in major category.

Student is responsible for sending any

requested forms to Job Shadow contact (current TB - ACTS is not current, immunization, confidentiality, etc) in a timely fashion.
