send you a link to its place on our SeSaME website. A reader wrote: “What an excellent, beautifully produced, easy to navigate, online magazine.”
If so, that’s maybe why you might miss getting an article into the
Sedgeberrow Post on time.
We have to admit that the increased gap, caused by being bi-monthly,
makes timing a little complicated for article and minute writers. It does
though significantly reduce the pressure on the time commitment of the
busy twenty two villagers who generously arrange the rhythm of their
lives around dropping the Post onto your doormat.
You can get rhythm though! Please look at these 2013 copy deadlines:
14th July. 15th Sept. 17th Nov Take the floor, swirl into action, plot and plan your meetings so
that you are left with time to catch the Sedgeberrow Post. Pen your
articles with an eye on those magic dates.

All sorts of Sauce That challenged Lea & Perrins
with Evesham Relish
In the Feb/March Post I asked what readers knew about Evesham Relish and how
it stood up against the clearly much more successful Lea & Perrins sauce. “We
knew nutting.” Luckily David Nash of Cultural Services in Worcester has un-
earthed details of even more rivals who challenged Lea & Perrins decades ago.
We have "Worcester City museum collection" to thank for these.
Holbrook’s Worcestershire Sauce Label “ The Proprieters of Holbrook’s Worcestershire Sauce beg your acceptance of the
sample bottle sent herewith, and for which they ask the favour of a trial against Messrs
Lea & Perrins’ brand.
In quality and flavour Holbrook’s is equal, if not superior to any other make of
Worcestershire sauce, and has the distinction of having the largest sale of any Sauce in
the world.
Duplicates of the sample bottle are sold by grocers at 6d (2.5p). They are nearly twice
as large as a small bottle of Lea & Perrins’, which are sold at from 10d to a 1/- (5p).
We think the comparison worthy of consideration, as by buying Holbrook’s you will get
equal, if not better quality for half the price, and at the same time, nearly double the
quantity.”
No fancy labelling here but an immediate “cut to the chase” with free samples and
a price war. Some things never change, though it was clearly to no avail. Sedge

More Traffic Mayhem
Report from County Councillor, Liz Eyre. Due to an obstructive vehicle in Main Street on the 24th April, Astons 540 bus got
stuck. (See page 38) This was the most recent in a long list of incidents. The reali-
ty is that the bus is experiencing regular problems in accessing the village and the
delays are causing a significant adverse effect on passengers, and on Aston's repu-
tation. They are not willing to risk further damage to their vehicles from having to
mount the verges, obstructions and hedges. If the bus service is withdrawn from
the village and the Old Cheltenham Road is used instead this would be a real blow
for the elderly and young people. One proposed solution, a single yellow line
down one side of the Street, is not welcomed due to access to the shop, which is
reopening, and potential devaluing of residential properties that have no parking,
added problems for some residents and the spoiling of the village's rurality.
I met with a Parish Councillor and a few local residents on the evening of May
3rd . The current immediate proposed solution, whilst we consider other options, is
the removal of overhanging hedging and trees near the Queen‟s Head Public house
by 16th May, a number of small but visible informative signs on private land
adjacent to the key pinch points, which could educate those who contribute to the
obstructive parking that is causing the problem.
It would be a real help if Main Street residents and their guests who have no off
street parking would park their cars close to the kerbs, avoid the pinch points and
corners, maximise off street parking, guide anyone they see who is not a direct
villager to park well away from areas that might affect the bus.
Please email me if you have any proposals which could help. I shall be speaking
to the Head Teacher of the school re some proposals. This subject will be on the
agenda at the Parish Council meeting on the 15th May.

shire villages. 07801816755. Email: [email protected]
Plea from a local church-end resident: “Please stop dumping your cars out-
side my drive and also using it as a turning point.”
Better still, if you are a Sedgeberrowite, why not walk down to the pub, or the
shop when it has re-opened, and keep yourself fit. Editor.

Evesham Town
Use Survey
Undertaken Autumn 2012
Results available 3/2/2013
The results displayed in this report have arisen from a questionnaire published in
Cotswold & Vale Magazine in September 2012. Originally commissioned by the
Evesham Market Towns Partnership (EMTP) with the assistance of the Vale of
Evesham Commercial and Tourism Association (VECTA), the purpose of the sur-
vey was to obtain a view of the town through local eyes, and through the eyes of
tourists, to assist with planning a way forward for the town. They also hoped to
counter some myths about the town.
Most of those who completed the questionnaire lived in Evesham or Badsey;
however, views were also obtained from every village in the Vale. Interestingly,
only a handful said that they were satisfied with the parking arrangements. Editor

Wychavon District Council Planning
Meeting.
Thursday 28thMarch 2013
This second planning meeting again
showed a good attendance of very con-
cerned Sedgeberrow folk, keen to show
their opposition and strongly in support
of those speaking on their behalf. It was,
unfortunately, to no avail.
Sally Tebbutt made a compelling argument about Main Street‟s limitations and
stating that there were much more suitable housing sites within the village.
There was clearly a lot of concern amongst Planning Committee members
about flooding and drainage issues and onlookers could be forgiven for believ-
ing they felt that the matter was out of their hands. They were given a sewage
assessment from Severn Trent that no upgrade was needed, even though their
workers had been called out several times last year for blockages and surface
sewage discharges into households. The Flood Group‟s wish for a proper flood
assessment was deemed unnecessary. It was the comment by Councillor Adrian
Darby, inexplicably pre-empting the judgement of a planning appeal, that gave
the death knell to villagers hopes. He claimed that if they refused the applica-
tion, it would be reversed by a Planning Officer. The inappropriateness of this
comment was summed up later by a letter in the Journal from two villagers :
“We believe by making such a statement before what turned out to be a close
vote (8-6), the councillor both brings into question the integrity of the com-
mittee to vote only on the information before them, and also presupposes the
decision an inspector might make on appeal, the outcome of which cannot be
predicted prior to it actually taking place.” The result indeed was quite close,
with only 8 supporting the application compared to 6 opposing it, and was very
disappointing for villagers.
The future is uncertain. We know we have entered a period of unpredictable
and extreme weather patterns, with increased precipitation likely, both in sum-
mer and winter. Good planning would suggest that not allowing houses to be
built where they might, even just possibly, add to the burden of flood risk, must
be a reassuring and low cost flood alleviation tactic. Our concerns have not
been addressed. It remains to be seen who was right. What we do know is, that
in the event of further extreme flood conditions, it is our villagers who will
bear the brunt, whilst planning culpability will not be made an issue. Editor

Women’s Institute
First of all, events that have happened since the last 'Post' magazine.
Several members went to the Annual Group Meeting at Cheltenham Town
Hall, where we heard some very good speakers including Sharon Davies,
who told us about some of the struggles she had as she rose to become a top
class swimmer.
We had our usual visit to the Regal Cinema. Sadly our speaker for April,
Nick Clark, was not able to come as he had had an eye operation. Hopeful-
ly, he will be on our programme for 2014. However, we were very
fortunate in having Ian Lloyd-Oswald, who came at the last moment to tell
us about his interest in 'Wood'. We hope to hear from him again on a differ-
ent subject next year.
By the time you read this report the Painting Day will be over, as will the
Clay Pigeon Shooting Day. Chris Shaw will have spoken about the Ashton
Garden Centre and their exciting plans for the future. We will also have
heard about the planting of hanging baskets and been to the Nursery and
done some of our own planting.
We shall have had our coffee morning, our book club meeting and our
skittles evening at Dumbleton.
Future events
Our June meeting will be quite different as we are having Pam Atanga to
talk about Life in Cameroon and the making of glass beads from old
bottles.
In July/ August we are hoping to arrange a walk at Farmcote followed by a
light lunch. Our coffee mornings, book club and cinema visits will continue
as usual.
Visitors and prospective members are always welcome.

. Some good News for Bees
European states have voted to ban three neonicotinoid pesticides
on crops attractive to honey bees. The decision follows growing
evidence that neonicotinoids pose 'a high acute risk' to bees, as
well as huge pressure on European governments to act. Restrict-
ing the use of these pesticides could be an historic milestone on
the road to recovery for our bees. But action on pesticides alone isn't enough. Oth-
er key causes of bee decline, such as disease and habitat loss, also require
urgent Government attention. A downside is that the UK Government's refusal to
back restrictions on these chemicals, despite growing scientific concern about their
impact, is yet another blow to our environmental credibility. Some local good news
is that our local Ashton Garden Plant Centre‟s (See page 26) Newsletter had
already announced, prior to that decision, that they would not be stocking those
pesticides and were also selling bee-friendly wildflower mats. Editor

Have a Safe & Secure Summer!
West Mercia is a safe place to live and burglary figures remain low. In fact, less
than one per cent of homes are burgled each year and your local policing team is
working hard to reduce this figure even further. Most burglaries are carried out by
opportunistic thieves and up to half are committed by thieves who enter the house
through an unlocked door or an open window.
With the advent of hot weather, West Mercia Police is reminding residents to be
vigilant and follow a few simple steps to significantly reduce the chances of their
home being broken into over the summer months and while away on holiday:
Ensure doors and windows are locked at all times.
Fit sturdy deadlocks (British Standard BS3621) to all external doors
Use timer switches to turn lights on in the evenings while you are out
Ensure newspapers, post, milk etc are not left on display
Ask a friend or neighbour to keep an eye on your home while you‟re away
Don‟t forget your garden! Effective garden security includes defensive planting
and well-kept fences and will help keep your home secure.

FOOTPATH WARDEN’S REPORT Walking: Happily there was good weather for April‟s spring walk via
Wormington and College Farm. Let‟s hope that the summer‟s
circular walk through the riverside woods and back via Sand-
field Farm on Sunday 14th
July (please note the change of
date) enjoys more of the same. As usual the walk will start at
11.00am from the school/village hall, and will be approximate-
ly 4 miles long and take about 2 hours. Looking ahead the au-
tumn circular walk will be on Sunday 5th
October and will
begin on the Wychavon Way towards Ashton- u-Hill, before
returning to Sedgeberrow through Dumbleton. Of course the
usual rules apply on both walks regarding clothing, footwear,
and refreshments, and with the proviso they will be cancelled or amended if neces-
sary. Please contact me as footpath warden, if you need further details of these
walks, or wish to raise any other issues about our rights of way.
Cycling: Ten years ago following a village campaign the cycle path from Evesham to
Sedgeberrow was opened, providing a safe route for pedestrians and cyclists alike.
Regrettably the promise of an extension to Station Road, Ashton-u-Hill was
reneged upon by the relevant authorities and never installed.
However in relation to Councillor Hardman‟s recent expressions of concern about
the safety of our section of the A46, our County Councillor has suggested it is
„back on the agenda‟. If you wish to back the completion of the cycle path please
get in touch your local County Councillor (See page 13) and express your support.
Running:
Now in its sixth year the very successful Evesham 10K is being held on Sunday 7th
July, and you will find further details in the advert on page 11 of this edition of
„The Sedgeberrow Post”. You can either collect a copy from me at 23 Winch-
combe Rd or download an entry form from www.eveshamvalerunningclub.org.uk,

News from Sedgeberrow CE
First School
01386 881391
During the Easter holidays we had some P.I.R. lighting controls
installed throughout school which we hope will help us to mini-
mise our electricity bills. The eco-committee have already been
monitoring electricity usage for the past two years and as a
school we try very hard to switch off lights, close doors and turn down thermo-
stats. We have a target line on our whole school graph and the children collect a
token for each week that we manage to keep electricity consumption below it.
When they reach a total of ten tokens they are allowed to choose a treat afternoon
which is an enjoyable reward. The hippos we installed in the toilets a couple of
years ago have enabled us to reduce our water consumption and we are currently
investigating cavity wall and loft insulation too. We are very proud of our eco-
schools status and keen to retain our Green Flag when we are re-assessed next year
so the action plan is constantly being updated.
The final day of the week was „Red Nose Day‟ so we all
dressed in red and sold noses to raise money for Comic Relief.
We held an inter-house bake-off competition on this day too
which was great fun and were able to send £449 to the cause.
At the end of the Spring Term we held a very
successful Book Week in school. You may
have seen the photo in the Journal showing the
children coming to school dressed as characters
from a book to celebrate World Book Day.
Throughout the week there were various activi-
ties related to books and reading taking place
including a visit from Evesham Library staff
and a Scholastic Book Fair.
This term began very well and is packed with events as usual. Year 5 spent a week
doing bikeability training and class photographs were taken for parents to pur-
chase. Our regular visits to Sandfield farm continue and Year 5 have some bell-
boating sessions this term in preparation for the regatta in June at Pershore. Year 1
attended a cluster multi-skills festival and are off to Bristol Aquarium soon while
Reception are due to visit Cotswold Farm Park. Year 2 will be visiting the Almon-
ry Museum in Evesham to learn all about local history and Year 4 are looking for-
ward to a World War II workshop in school. Our residential trips to Malvern and
Condover outdoor education centres take place soon and Year 3 will be going to
take part in „Pilgrim‟s Quest‟ at Worcester Cathedral.

A Childhood Scene
Technically, I reckon I‟m a bit young to be reminiscing... but Sedgeberrow IS a
lot different now from when I was tiny in the 1980s. Whilst some things remain
the same, the most noticeable change is the lack of shops. There were once two,
and to avoid getting mixed up, we used to call them „top shop‟ and „bottom
shop‟. This was based purely on the fact that one was towards the top of the vil-
lage, whilst the other was lower down...
„Top shop‟ (now „The Ark‟) was where we went for groceries, and to use the
post office – me clutching my blue plastic deposit book of a Saturday. „Bottom
shop‟ was where I really looked forward to going, for there was Olive, and her
sweets! Most of the sweeties really did only cost a penny then, and they were
tantalisingly displayed beneath the glass counter. I would spend ages agonising,
then point out my choices to the lovely Olive, who would put them in a white
paper bag for me. My absolute favourites were the blue and pink liquorice all-
sorts, with little balls all over them, and the raspberry and blackberry jellies.
It was a weekly treat – ritual even - to go to the shops in Sedgeberrow. Here‟s
hoping that will be a possibility again soon.
(From an ex Sedgeberrow resident. Editor)
Do you have a childhood tale to tell? Please share it with us.
Our new stage is being used well
during break and lunchtimes and
the playground markings have been
repainted in bright colours, so our
children have great fun outside.
Our Summer Fete takes place in school on Friday 14th June from 3.30 –
5.30 pm. It would be lovely to see lots of people there.
Key Stage Two Show – I’m a Believer! Pershore Number 8 It has been a few years since we performed our annual show in a theatre but this year we
are delighted to be using Pershore Number 8 for I‟m a Believer! (based on the story of
Shrek). This show is definitely not one to be missed and we really hope to fill the auditori-
um on both nights so everyone in the parish and community is welcome to come along.
Performances take place on Wednesday 19th June and Thursday 20th June at 7.00 pm
and tickets are on sale from the school office at a cost of £6 per adult and £3 per child un-
der 16. Hopefully there should be no need to restrict the number sold as the auditorium is
so large. The children in Key Stage Two are working incredibly hard on making this a
successful performance and we really hope you will all be able to support them.

the page 6 question.
Wordsearch Answer Yellow Brick Road
Hallo everyone Muppet here
It‟s true folks, revenge is a dish best eaten cold – our two-
legs has given Doofuss a haircut (whilst my hair is growing
back very nicely thank you). Who‟s laughing now Ah? At
least my haircut was done by a professional (even if it was
a professional butcher!) Doofuss is so scrawny (if I could
count I‟d know just how many ribs he‟s got) that he has to
run around in the rain just to get slightly wet – Honestly, I
saw more meat on the butchers pencil!
Because Doofuss is now too embarrassed to be seen in public it means that both
our two-legs aren‟t getting out as much as they should so we have had to invent
a fitness regime for them. First we allow them to throw our toys as far as they
can which will improve their upper body strength, then we get them to collect all
the toys and bring them back and this walking backwards and forwards will in-
crease their lower body strength. Clever or what? We give them lots of encour-
aging barks and tail wags but they don‟t seem to enjoy exercise hour as much as
us, in fact Old Grey Beard can be heard muttering darkly about stupid animals.
We have absolutely no idea to whom he refers ... it couldn‟t possibly be us,
could it? Muppet

Re Main St: A Personal Message of Thanks From Sally "Huge thanks to everyone who supported our cause in trying to stop the planning
application for the site on Main Street. I am sorry to report we were unsuccessful
which was a massive blow to us all. We will now have to endure the disruption of
building 20 houses on the site along with all the extra traffic and added problems
with our sewage and drainage system. We will carry on trying to have input on
how the houses are located within the site and will report back to the village if
there is any further news." Sally Tebbutt
Further to Sally‟s commitment to having an input on how the houses are located
within the site, readers may wish to know that a small group of people have ex-
pressed a desire also to contribute to other housing and planning essentials, which
they see as in the best interest of the Village. As well as Sally‟s interest in neigh-
bourhood impact, there will be issues of flooding, drainage, energy, the housing
levy and conservation that will need careful consideration. They have agreed to
keep each other well informed about their activities thereby minimising un-
coordinated approaches to the District Council and Sedgeberrow Nominees Ltd,
who judging from meetings with the latter‟s representatives, have as much inten-
tion as us to create a quality project for the village. One that will meet many of
those essential requirements.

SEDGEBERROW FLOOD GROUP
www.sedgeberrow.com Flood Warden - Richard Hunt 01386 882079 Secretary – [email protected]
Report on recent activities:
We are keen to maintain an up to date register of our Flood Friends so are busy
updating the details of all volunteers. Do expect a call from us soon to check we
have it right for you. Likewise, if you are new to Sedgeberrow and would like to
volunteer, please contact us.
We continue to campaign for a resolution to the Insurance - Statement of Princi-
ples, through our M.P. Harriett Baldwin. On 16th May a statement was issued by
the Flood Minister Richard Benyon – “The ABI has extended the present agree-
ment for one month from 30th June and is close to a solution”. Watch this space!
We are also working closely with Charlton Flood Group, both in terms of Insur-
ance and the EA budget cuts to flood defences.
As a group we have been looking at possible sites for temporary water storage
upstream of the village that could be used to alleviate the pressure of peak flows.
In conjunction with Worcestershire County Council we have also been investigat-
ing the filling in of ditches, which are a key element in reducing water run-off.
WCC will actively pursue any unlawful action they are made aware of, so if you
see anything when walking around the village or surrounding areas do let us
know.
The Flood Group was disappointed at the outcome of the Main Street housing pro-
posals. We believe the true flood risk from these additional houses has not been
identified and that proposals were not thoroughly analysed. As a result we will
work closely with Severn Trent Water and Worcestershire County Council (lead
agency on flood management) to monitor the development.
Through the Highways Agency, hydrological and ecological surveys along the
River Isbourne have been undertaken. Much useful information is starting to be
reported to us which we will share with you in due course.

Recent Developments on the Allotment Plots
just off Churchill Road
The sap is rising, beans are already winding and change is in the air. Well,
just about. Sadly that change includes four of the old team moving out of
the village. Thanks though to Alice, Guy, Gilly and Simon for their efforts
at the start of it all.
Richard Hunt is the new Chairman and will also cover the Treasurer‟s
role. Anna Hadley will become Secretary as Cerys reduces her input.
Funding has been obtained through the Parish Council to improve the
facilities. We should be reaping the benefits of that over the next few
months. If anyone has any spare, used scaffolding planks, or similar
timber that can be used for the new raised beds, please contact member
Mike Parker on 01386 881863
The aims of the restrictions are to maintain traffic flows (particularly for
the local bus service), which are hampered by parked vehicles, and to im-
prove safety. The Parish Council, at its meeting in March, agreed that the
proposed yellow lines and accompanying street furniture were unaccepta-
ble and hoped that villagers would reduce indiscriminate parking them-
selves. Since then there have been further obstructive incidents with the
Aston‟s buses getting stuck. (see page 38) Unless an urgent resolution to
this continuing issue can be found, the bus company will have no choice
but to withdraw the bus service from the village and use the old Chelten-
ham Road instead. This would also include the school buses. In the mean-
time would all residents endeavour to park their vehicles off the road when
possible, or park close to the kerb making sure they are not causing an ob-
struction to traffic flow.
If you wish to apply for an Allotment Plot, get involved, do contact Anna
on 01386 882010. Help is at hand, if you are new to it all.

Report of the 10thApril, Public meeting at the Village Hall,
with Guest Speaker, Heather Lammas AIEMA, and
Liz Harris, from Worcestershire County Council.
A dozen Sedgeberrow villagers came to enjoy the delights of tea and cakes,
generously provided by Jenny Wood and Ella Hardman, whilst being up-
dated about the County Council‟s Climate Change strategy consultation.
They were there, at SeSaME‟s invitation, to explain about plans in
Worcestershire for responding to a changing climate and increasingly
severe weather patterns. There was also the hope that those attending
would follow up with completing an online consultation document, with a
deadline of Friday 26th April submission time.
It was a stimulating time, with Heather giving us a broad outline of the
thinking behind the strategy and able to explore our views about some of
the issues as they compared to the actual reality. It was a great learning
curve for many of us. The evening ended with Heather asking people to
record their ideas and responses in relation to three strategic areas.
1. Resilience to fuel costs and severe weather.
2. Creating a low carbon environment.
3. Existing achievements in the Village.
This created much interest and discussion, creating useful lists that she
could take away as a contribution to the consultation process.
We await the updated Worcestershire Climate Change Strategy Consulta-
tion with great interest.

WHICH? gets energy companies
to publish complaint figures.
from the graph that in the last quarter of 2012, EDF Energy received the most com-
plaints of the major energy companies, with 81 complaints logged for every1000
customers. By comparison Scottish Power received just under 14 complaints
per1000 customers. Between them the six major suppliers – British Gas, EON, EDF
Energy, Npower, Scottish Power and Scottish & Southern Energy – have received
more that 5 million complaints a year.
Why so many complaints I don‟t know? There‟s no reason to think so many com-
plaints are due to the fact, as I understand it, four of them are subsidiaries of foreign
companies, because the best is one of them, two being German, one Spanish and
one French. The good thing to know is that in future you should be better informed,
when exploring the pros and cons of switching your electricity supplier. Editor.
The April issue of WHICH? Reports that the energy regu-
lator Ofgem has responded to their call for better data to be
published about energy suppliers‟ complaints, following
their 2012 investigation. It means that you can now com-
pare energy companies by the number of complaints they
receive. The data will be published quarterly. You can see
