Thanks to everyone who came along to pay tribute to those who help keep Grafham Church going. Thank you also to Christine who very kindly presented every congregation member with a lovely framed 'photo of the church. In fact, there are in excess of 45 people actively engaged in God's mission for this church by doing all sorts of things. This includes children helping with cleaning and flower arranging. Well done! The comments in our visitor's book reflect how much our church is admired not only as a building but also as a place of peace and spirituality. These qualities extend beyond the building and are active within the fellowship we share. Four people from our group of parishes, including one from Grafham, recently attended a day's course on 'Fresh Expressions'. This is a style of church for our changing culture that is ecumenical in its approach and does not necessarily operate from a church building. Nationally, it is gaining a lot of interest, particularly within rural areas and amongst those who are not familiar with or find the established church daunting. It has the support of The Archbishop of Canterbury who is keen to see this develop. Our two Jills have been re-elected to serve as Churchwardens for yet another year. June 2007 Issue 35

The water vole is the largest of the British vole species andone with which the nation holds a particular affection, havingbeen brought to the attention of several generations of childrenthrough Kenneth Graham's novel "The Wind in the Willows" (asthe character Ratty). Indeed, at the time the story was written, the water vole was such a common sight throughout the Britishcountryside that in several areas it was considered a pest dueto the damage caused by voles burrowing into riverbanks. However, over the last 50 years the national water vole popula-tion has declined to such an extent that it is now regarded asBritain's fastest declining mammalian species. While many rea-sons have been postulated for this decline, it is widely acceptedthat habitat loss and the introduction of the American mink havebeen responsible. American mink were originally introduced forfur farming in the 1920s, with the first confirmed breeding in thewild occurring in 1957, having resulted from a combination ofescapes and deliberate releases by animal rights activists. In amanner similar to the problem posed by the introduced greysquirrel to our native red squirrel, an alien species with no natu-ral predators has decimated a native population. Several other examples are well-known; Japanese knotweedwas first introduced from Asia to Europe in the mid-nineteenthcentury as an ornamental and fodder plant. Within years theknotweed was naturalised and spread throughout the lengthand breadth of the UK. Japanese knotweed thrives on distur-bance and is easily spread by both natural means and byhuman activity. In riparian areas, high flows disperse fragmentsof the plant downstream where new colonies are easily formed.Indeed, it is considered such a threat to our native biota that itis one of only two terrestrial plants deemed illegal to allow togrow by the Wildlife and Countryside Act.As the problems manifested in Australia by rabbits and canetoads testify, an introduced species with no natural predatorscan be vastly damaging to the natural functionality of anyecosystem and will often sound the death-knell for nativespecies. Most ecosystems are so finely balanced that a shift inspecies composition or the introduction of another will upset thebalance irrevocably, with massive repercussions for the nativespecies.

JUNIOR CRICKET NIGHTStarts:- Tuesday 5th June Finishes:- Tuesday 10th JulyTime:-Under 12s 6.00 - 7.30pm12s and over 7.00 - 8.30pmPlace:- Grafham Playing Fieldby the village hall.

Important Note If there is rain in the afternoon on the dayof the Junior Cricket night, the practice will be cancelled, asrain makes the grass unsafe to practise on.Junior Cricket Contact:- Adam Dighton 01480 811862

Cometh the cricket season, cometh the rain. This was notquite true of our first game of the season at Mowsbury ParkBedford, against St Andrews. The sun made an appearancein the late afternoon, St Andrews made a credible 134 allout, but the highlight of the game as far as Grafham wasconcerned, was Stewart Clayton: Grafham's wicket keepermaking an astounding low level catch to his right. Thisbrought a momentary hush to all who witnessed it, followedby much loud jubilation, and remarks trying to conjure theessence of this spectacular catch. A late flourish by StAndrew's no: 9 batsman who hit a lively 36, was caught inthe gulley by Stewart's brother Tom, who juggled the ball; aheart in the mouth second, before a firm grasp was sus-tained.When Grafham made its batting reply, some good swingbowling pinned Grafham down and caused a steady fall ofwickets, with a total of 82 all out being reached.

The second match was on the 12th May 2007; a re-arranged home match against Smith Arms. Friday had beena day of much rain, and early Saturday morning was a timeof decision: to play or not to play. Clouds of every charcoalhue scurried across the Grafham sky, but no rain. The MetOffice web site was scrutinised, barometers tapped, sunnywith light showers, a late afternoon and evening of sunlightand white clouds.

Now to phone," Martin" (Smith Arms contact), "the game’son, the pitch is in good condition. No it's not a paddy field, slightly damp on top, fit for a game of cricket".

Eric cuts the square; John creates the white boundary line;bat and bowling markings are inscribed on the square, home for a quick lunch. Large rain drops stud the windowpane, not now, how do you do an anti-rain dance? The rainclouds lift, cricketers start arriving, kit is pulled out of carboots, a momentary scan of the Grafham sky by the arrivals;"Yes we'll get a game!"

There was no happy ending for Grafham. Smith Armsscored 235 for 7 declared with a masterly innings of 111 notout from their no: 7 batsman. Grafham in reply could onlymuster a reply of 42 all out.

PARISH NEWS... The Annual Parish Assembly was held on 8th May. Councillor Peter Downes and

Patricia Jordan attended the meeting and gave us an update on District and County Council news.Following the election Huntingdon District Council has 52 elected councillors, 39 Conservatives, 11 LiberalDemocrats and 2 Independents. Council tax for the coming year has risen by 4.99% which is the 18th lowest inthe country. The County Council is made up of 43 Conservatives, 22 Liberal Democrats and 4 Labour councillors.Scheduled for re-building in Huntingdon is Pathfinder House, the library and the bus station and a one-stop shop call in centrein St. Ives.Peter Downes has been working closely with Environmental Health to get improvements in the situation with the chicken farmand there is evidence of improvement. However, the situation will be very closely monitored. The deteriorating state of Brampton Road has received some attention and the parish council have been in contact with theHighways Agency with a view to getting some remedial work done on the pot-holes.Work to improve the position of the post-box in Breach Road is expected to be carried out in the next few weeks. Complaints have been received again about the parking of cars on the footpaths. This is an offence and navigating young chil-dren round these vehicles and into the road can be very dangerous, especially when other traffic is travelling on the road. Ifyou have difficulty parking on your driveway or outside your home, please try to use other parking places that do not entail halfof the vehicle being on the footpath.A more full report on the Annual Parish Meeting and the minutes of the Annual General Meeting of the Parish Council will beposted on the village website. Letters to the Editors...

Whilst I agree with Alan's closing sentiments (May Grafham Gossip) regarding the influence that the rapidly increasing globalhuman population has not only on our climate, but also on the natural functionality of the planet, I must disagree with his sen-timents regarding the role that carbon dioxide ( CO2 ) has played in the recent warming process. Given the high stakesinvolved with a change in our climate, it is hardly surprising that scientists' methods and conclusions are coming under consid-erable scrutiny. This is as it should be. After all, scepticism is fundamental to the scientific method. While it is true that the fluctuations in temperatures which caused the ice ages were initiated by changes in the Earth's orbitaround the Sun, which in turn, instigated the increase in atmospheric CO2. We can verify this through the analysis of datafrom ice cores which show that the historic rises in temperature preceded the rises in levels of CO2 by several hundred years. The causative factors for this, whilst not still fully elucidated, are understood to be due to the fact that the oceans emit CO2 asthey warm up and absorb it when they cool down. Further to this, soil also releases greenhouse gases (particularly CO2 andmethane) as it warms up. These increased levels of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere then served to further enhance thewarming effect, creating a 'positive feedback' loop.In contrast to this natural process, we know that the recent increase in the level of CO2 (approximately 30% in the last 100years) is not the result of natural factors. Experimental evidence and chemical analysis has shown that the majority of thisCO2 is derived from the burning of fossil fuels. Analysis of the gases trapped in cores of polar ice have shown that the levelsof CO2 in the atmosphere are now 35% greater than they have been for at least the last 650 000 years. From the radioactivityand chemical composition of this gas, we can be highly certain that this is has resulted from the human activity such as theburning of fossil fuels, and other human induced factors such as global cement production and the widespread burning (andhence release of CO2) of the world's forests. The increase in global temperature is consistent with what the climate sciencetells us should be expected when the levels of CO2 and other greenhouse gases in the atmosphere increase in the way thatthey have. There is no question that the more CO2 there is in the atmosphere, the warmer the planet becomes. While it is not the onlymechanism for warming, it is the most prominent; we are adding CO2 and other greenhouse gases to the atmosphere in away that has never happened before. The physics of how these gases cause warming by trapping the sun's radiation withinthe lower atmosphere - the greenhouse effect - is well established and it is no surprise that temperatures have been risingover the past century. What's more, from the comprehensive models that climate scientists have built up, it is clear that onlyhuman-made greenhouse gases can explain this warming. Other factors, such as solar variation or the effect of water vapourhave been found to be insignificant in comparison. As such, we can claim with a high degree of certainty that carbon dioxide from human sources is almost certainly responsiblefor most of the warming over the last 50 years. There is much peer-reviewed evidence that confirms this and none of a credi-ble nature which conflicts with it.

Thank you for your supportMay I through the Grafham Gossip thank all those who supported me by leaflet drop, and by voting for me at the recentParish Council Election.Unfortunately, I was not elected, but it is re-assuring to know that all our Parish Councillors have been elected and are there-fore accountable to the electorate of Grafham, rather than being co-opted for their term of office. Thank you again for yoursupport. Keith Gowen

I would like to see money spent on measures to slow drivers down - I know the speed bumps have gone but they were notmuch use anyway. On Saturday 21st April I was accompanying my daughter who is learning to drive. She was indicating toturn into the car park when along came a Mercedes estate. It just managed to get past us while we were turning, barely miss-ing the car park fence. The driver greeted us with a rude gesture. It is nothing but sheer ignorance, he and the others who doit think they have more right to the road than anyone else. It is little wonder that the road sign and the fence at the Perry,Grafham, Ellington T-juntion are damaged. Paul Smith, Grafham
