July Sower 2018 VBS Vacation Bible School is only two weeks away. VBS will run July 15th-19th from 6-8. If you haven't registered your child, please do that as soon as possible. Registration forms are available on the bulletin board and in the narthex. Please feel free to invite your friends and family and encourage them to turn in their registration forms too. Those involved with VBS are encouraged to bring a plain t-shirt the first night so that an iron-on Splash Canyon logo can be put on the shirt to wear on Thursday and to have as a keepsake. Families are encouraged to attend on Thursday at 6 for a shortened evening including a program and fun activities. We are asking for monetary donations to cover the various expenses required to carry out VBS. A donation box is in the narthex for those who are able to contribute. We will also be posting a list of items that can be donated for crafts and snacks. Please remove the note off the bulletin board of the item that you can donate. Craft items can be turned into the office right away and snack items should be turned in by Friday the 13th. Kayaking We are considering a fun culminating activity for Splash Canyon and invite the congregation to join. On Saturday, July 21st, we will be taking a group to kayak Turkey Creek. A parent must accompany their children younger than high school age. If you are interested in joining us for kayaking, please contact the office to give them a list of the people who will be attending by Friday the 13th. Payment will need to be made by Friday the 20th. Checks can be made out to Zion. An exact time will be determined once we know how many people will be attending. Herrera Family

A fundraiser is being planned to support Bryceton Herrera and family. The date is set for Sunday, September 30th. The event will include a meal and silent auction in Zion’s gym. More details will be provided the closer we get to September. At this time we are asking people to save the date so you are able to attend and consider donating baskets for the silent auction. It is recommended that a family or families go together to assemble a basket to donate to the silent auction. A list of ideas is available if you need help deciding on a basket.

Please contact Michelle Millsap at 308-233-7398, Lisa Splittgerber at 308-627-4566 or [email protected], or speak with Amy Woodman if you have any questions. Also, please contact Michelle if you plan to donate a basket so that we do not have duplicate baskets. Completed baskets will not be due until September. Anyone interested in helping with the fundraiser is welcome to contact Michelle as well. Thank you!

Rev. Jonathan and Anita Clausing

Serving the Lord in Eastern Africa

Rev. Jonathan and Anita Clausing serve the Lord as missionaries through The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod (LCMS) in Eastern Africa, based in Kenya. As a theological educator, Jonathan has served at both St. Peter Theological Seminary in Himo, Tanzania, and in the theology department of Neema Lutheran College in Matongo, Kenya, teaching a variety of courses on the New Testament, the Lutheran Confessions and church history.

Jonathan was born in Belvidere, Ill., where Immanuel Lutheran Church, his home congregation, is located. He grew up on the family farm outside of town and received a bachelor’s degree in agricultural studies from Iowa State University, Ames. He received his Master of Divinity from Concordia Seminary, St. Louis. Before serving in Eastern Africa, Jonathan served as the site director of Lutheran Valley Retreat, Woodland Park, Colo., and, most recently, as the director of campus ministry at Lutheran High School of St. Charles County, St. Peters, Mo. Jonathan enjoys playing and writing music, wilderness backpacking and mountain climbing.

Anita was born in Aurora, Ill., and her home congregation is Cross Evangelical Lutheran Church and School, Yorkville, Ill. She received a bachelor’s degree in secondary education, along with her Director of Christian Education certificate, from Concordia University, Nebraska, Seward. Before heading to the mission field, Anita served as program director at Lutheran Valley Retreat, Woodland Park, Colo. Since 1999, she has been a stay-at-home mom, homeschooling their children. Her hobbies include scrapbooking and connecting with friends on Facebook. Jonathan and Anita have nine children — Emil, Ellie, Ernie, Eunice, Ethan, Eric, Eileen, Elijah and Emmanuel — who join them on the mission field.

Prayers Pray for the entire Clausing family as they serve in East Africa. Ask God to give them strength and peace in their life overseas as missionaries. Pray that the Word of God takes root and bears the fruit of faith in the lives of the East Africans who hear it.

Do you wish you could contribute more to Zion? Zion’s Scrip Program is a way for everyone to give more to Zion. Recently, $8000 was given to the church from the Scrip Program to help cover some of the shortfall from our 2017-2018 church budget. Ideally, by increasing our Scrip usage, the Scrip Program could annually give the church thousands of dollars without costing our members any extra money.

Scrip is a year long fundraising effort where you simply purchase Scrip gift cards to pay for the things you normally would. We’re not asking you to buy anything you wouldn’t ordinarily buy. What we are asking you to do is to pay for the things you buy with Scrip instead of cash, check, or credit card.

Zion purchases Scrip gift cards at a discount and sells them at face value. The difference between our cost and the face value is our profit. Zion School families using the Scrip Program can earn tuition credit: 50% of your Scrip profits can be applied toward your family’s tuition. Family and friends may also designate their Scrip profits to the tuition of Zion School families.

Scrip gift cards are sold in the office and the Book Nook on Sundays. We have gift cards on hand from many local retailers (Hy-Vee, Walmart, Menards, Target, Sinclair, Cenex, Burger King, Wendy’s, Walgreens, and more). However, you can order gift cards through the office for hundreds more retailers, including The Home Depot, Lowe’s, Kohl’s, Bed, Bath & Beyond, and Best Buy.

Currently, there are only 14 families doing the majority of Scrip purchases. These 14 families make up 75% of our Scrip profits. These families on average purchase $500 worth of Scrip gift cards per month and raise an extra $200 to give to Zion each year. If we could get more people to regularly participate in the Scrip Program, the results could make a big impact on Zion’s budget.

Do you buy groceries and gasoline? Do you make home improvements and go out to eat? Do you fill prescriptions? Do you make purchases online? Sure, we all do! Using Scrip gift cards to do the shopping you normally do will help Zion Lutheran Church and School. Please consider making the effort to change the way you shop. Yes, it takes a little extra effort and planning but the benefits can help you and your congregation.

You can also sign-up to pay for Scrip online via PrestoPay (similar to PayPal) and buy ScripNow (electronic gift cards). The number of ScripNow retailers is growing all the time. You can place your ScripNow order anywhere you can get online, whether on your home computer or your mobile device. Your electronic gift cards will be delivered to you in mere minutes. So you can be shopping at Cabela’s and see something you just can’t live without, you order your Scrip on your phone and minutes later you earn 8% for Zion.

Visit www.shopwithscrip.com to learn more about Scrip and the different retailers available. If you wish to sign up for PrestoPay and/or have questions about Scrip, please do not hesitate to contact the school office. We would like Zion’s usage of Scrip to increase dramatically and want to assist anyone willing to help us earn more money for our church and school.
