Love One Another

In the New Testament. We begin with the challenge of loving one another, as John says, ‘Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God’ (1 John 4:7). Authentic Christian community in our churches will be shaped by how much we love each other. What does John say about this?

Recognise that God first loved us:

‘Love is when you go out to eat and give somebody most of your French fries without making them give you any of theirs.’ (Chrissy, age 6). At heart, love is not just feelings but action! Although we are underserving, God demonstrated His love for us in the person of Jesus, by sending Him to die for us, ‘This is love: not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins’ (10). We can only show God’s love to others if we have first-hand experience ourselves. It’s the Holy Spirit who draws us into the loving embrace of the Father and Son, to enable us to experience the love between members of the Trinity.

Recognise the call to love one another:

How can we show people what God’s love looks like? It will be seen

and experienced in the life of the Christian community within our churches. ‘No one has ever seen God; but if we love one another, God lives in us and His love is made complete in us’ (12). Significantly John uses the same opening phrase in John1:18 when referring to Jesus. The implication of his words is that if you want to know what God is like you have to look to Jesus and the Church!

As ‘Church’, we are called to demonstrate God’s love in the way we behave together, by how we pray, support, encourage, forgive and welcome each other. How do we experience God’s love in the groups and Sunday congregations that we belong to?

Colin Urquhart has talked about a roundabout which most churches reach at some point, when they ask, ‘Where do we go from here?’ There are various roads off the roundabout, marked ‘evangelism’, ‘healing’, ‘social involvement’ etc. They try the roads but find they all lead back to the roundabout. Finally, they notice a little dirt track marked ‘love one another’. So often God has to being us back to that track and tell as again, love one another!

Keepers – finding things in street

The gospels have a number of stories about things lost and found. The lost sheep, the prodigal son, and one of my favourites - the lost coin. I wonder if Our Lord had someone in mind when He told that parable? Perhaps He had seen a lady searching high and low, turning the house upside down - could it have been His mother, Mary? Just a thought. I am always losing things myself; usually essentials like glasses and keys and once my wife. We got separated from each other in a museum in Germany. I spoke to a warder who took me to a room where all the CCTV cameras were, and I was invited to select a wife. In the end, to get her back, I had to make an announcement over the tannoy. I am also always finding things. Maybe it is because I look downwards all the time. I have found keys, a wallet, a suit jacket, bank cards and a bobble hat on a train. The suit jacket was on a train so I could easily tell the guard. The wallet was outside a station in the drop off zone and I just handed it in. Things lost in other places are best handed to the police station. There they will take down your details and if not claimed they can give it back to you. If, like me, you often lose things, it is sensible to be careful. Do not put your pin number with bank cards. It is probably not a good idea to keep documents in your car that could be traced to you. Do you have a separate note of important telephone and other numbers if something is stolen? Do not put your address on your key tab. The bobble hat is another story. It was left on a first class carriage and I could remember the man and where he was sitting. I gave a full description of the man, the seat and which train he was on to a lady at enquiries at Newcastle station. I do not think it was ever claimed. Between you and me, I suspect he has spent much of his life trying to get away from it.

Poem

Come, you Christian men and women Come you to the harvest now! Gather now the souls, forgiven Those who hear their Saviour’s vow! In this world of sin and sorrow Jesus shines His saving light Promise of a bright tomorrow For those living in His sight! From Him comes the strength and power From Him comes the words you need He will lead you every hour He’ll inspire your every deed! He will be your inspiration He’ll provide your every breath As you go throughout the nations Telling how He’s beaten death! Go you into all the nations Preach the gospel of His love Tell, throughout the whole creation How He came from God above; Tell them how His love flowed freely On the Cross of Calvary - Tell them that they’re loved so dearly They can live eternally!

PCC Report

Wednesday 27th May at 7.30pm - 18 attendees and 6 apologies

As this was the first meeting since the APCM it was necessary to elect the annual appointments:

• Elaine Litherland - Council Secretary; • Howard Parkin - Vice Chairman; • Marcia Clague - Deputy Vice Chairman; • The Standing Committee was elected and comprises the rector, 4

wardens and 2 members of PCC – Phil Litherland and Carole Bairstow.

There is a vacancy for the Diocesan Synod as we are entitled to have 4 representatives but only 3 people (Carole Bairstow, Marcia Clague and Liz Hull ) put themselves forward for election at the APCM. It was agreed that the vacancy will be notified to the general congregation to see if there is anyone who wishes to be considered.

We still have no Treasurer, however we have appointed a new Parish Clerk, Tricia Cooil, who started in mid-June. We are all looking forward to working with Tricia. A new Treasurer needs to be appointed to oversee our finances. Tricia will be doing much of the day to day financial work. Money is being deposited into the bank accounts and bills are being paid but we still someone to oversee our finances. Marcia Clague provided the Wardens Report in which she welcomed the 2 new , Elaine Litherland and Lyn Kinrade, and thanked the 2 retiring wardens, Ed Gumbley and Dave Jelly. The wardens were all sworn in at Chapter Court at St Georges’ on Friday 15 May. Marcia

also reported that the guttering work will be commencing in July. Some electrical works have been undertaken on the car park and electrical work in church identified by the Quinquennial Inspection has been done. Carole Bairstow reported that the Open the Book team continue to attend Onchan, Ashley Hill and Laxey primary schools each month and the last visit this term will be in July. The Youth group have raised over £1000 towards the purchase of a projector and screen. The Rector reported that the Easter services went really well and the All Age Family Service on Good Friday was the best ever attended. The Easter Day service attendance was up by 30 adults from last year. We also have a new magazine editor, Matthew Mortimer. The Rector is introducing a few changes to our services:

• Common Worship Communion at 6.30pm on the 4th Sunday • BCP Communion at 6.30pm on the 2nd Sunday as it is Morning

Praise at the 11am service. • Occasionally we are having a Common Worship Communion on

Wednesdays at 10.30am instead of the traditional BCP, mindful that we need to be inclusive and use contemporary language as well as the poetry of the Prayer Book.

The Rector has been busy with funerals. To date he has taken around 40 whereas he usually takes 45 a year. Sadly, Lonan Church is now formally closed and a 2 year consultation process has started The Rector’s final comments were concerning how we grow our church. At times our Family Service congregation looks like a totally

different congregation on other Sundays. We need to understand why people under the age of 50 do not engage with our solid week by week congregation. As a church we need to think as a team and everyone has a role to play, not just leave it to the “few”. The Rector concluded by thanking everyone for their continued support. Future events were discussed. St Peters will be having a stall at the Village Fair on July 11th. We are also planning to hold a car boot sale on the car park on Saturday 25th July. Other events were discussed which will be advertised in due course. The meeting closed at 8.45pm with the grace

Elaine Litherland – Secretary to the PCC
