MESSAGE TO THE DIASPORA

ON THE OCCASION OF THE 43rd REPUBLIC ANNIVERSARY

FROM HIS EXCELLENCY DONALD RAMOTAR, PRESIDENT OF GUYANA

I extend warmest greetings to the Guyanese community in the United States of

America, and elsewhere on this the occasion of the 43rd anniversary of the attain-

ment of republican status for our country. I am extremely delighted by the ongoing

interest that has been shown by the Guyanese Diaspora in our national celebrations

and the enthusiastic response that these activities attract.

This I believe is a reflection of the deep affection and strong ties that our non-

resident Guyanese have for their country. Despite being separated by distance from

their homeland, they care deeply about their country and are proud to be called a

Guyanese and to be associated with activities that celebrate our national heritage.

As we celebrate another Republic Day, let us be proud to announce our Guyanese

heritage. We are a nation enriched by our diverse cultures. This diversity should

generate intense pride rather than becoming a source of division and strife. I there-

fore trust that your observances to mark Republic Day 2013 will highlight and reflect

our rich cultural diversity and what a great national asset this is.

You too, the members of the Diaspora are also valuable members of our nation. I

wish to use this opportunity of Republic Day to thank all of you for being part of the

Guyanese family and for your many contributions to your country and its peoples. I

trust that you will continue to take a keen interest in your homeland and I wish to

invite all of you to come back home even if it is for a short visit to see for yourselves

the positive transformation that has and is taking place in your homeland. Guyana is

your homeland and you will always be welcome here.

Have an enjoyable Republic Day and may the love you hold for our homeland never

fade or be extinguished! Happy Republic Day!

Donald Ramotar

President of Guyana

Message from the Honorary Consul

Ramzan Roshanali

It gives me great pleasure to have the opportunity to send warm greetings on behalf of the Government of

Guyana to our Diaspora in Florida and the Commonwealth of the Bahamas on the occasion of the 43rd an-

niversary of the Republic of Guyana. It is an important milestone as it came not long after our country

gained Independence.

We will also observe some very important and significant anniversaries this year. This month is the 250th

anniversary of the 1763 Berbice Slave Uprising. May of this year will mark the 175th anniversary of the

arrival of Indians in Guyana on the ships S.S. Whitby and S.S. Hesperus. August will mark the 190th anni-

versary of the Demerara slave rebellion. This year is the 175th anniversary of the abolition of slavery and

the emancipation of enslaved slaves. And this year also marks the 160th year of Chinese arriving in Guy-

ana.

Our country became sovereign, free, independent and democratic after long years of struggle. And while

we use these occasions to reflect on those struggles and our successes so far, we must remember that we

need also to look to the future. There are many things that our people and country still need to accomplish

so as to provide a better standard of living for all. So in many ways the struggle for heightened social and

economic development continues.

We have sustained a nationhood which today witnesses our relative peaceful co-existence. New projects

are being implemented by both Guyanese, foreign companies and groups who have discovered that Guy-

ana is truly open for business. Even as you read this, a new hotel is being built in Guyana which will di-

rectly employ about 200 Guyanese.

In this sense, Guyanese in the Diaspora can play a vital role in contributing to the development of our

country. I think that the recent initiatives by the Honorable Carolyn Rodrigues-Birkett, Minister of For-

eign Affairs to consult with Guyanese living abroad through The Guyana Diaspora ( GUYD ) Project with

support from the International Organization for Migration ( IOM ) and the Government of Guyana is a

vessel through which we can continue to make significant contributions to the development of our country.

I am sure this will continue and I urge all of you to pay more attention to what is happening at home and

to stay connected.

Of course, our Republic Day celebration is highlighted by that most colourful of Guyanese festivities,

Mashramani. It is a truly Guyanese event that is gaining in popularity at home and abroad. Many use this

occasion to visit Guyana and we should do so in greater numbers.

On this occasion I extend to all Guyanese Happy Republic Day and Mashramani and wish you a successful

cultural presentation, with all the camaraderie, nostalgia and patriotism that it will evoke.

even a greater honor to welcome you all here tonight on behalf of the committee. Allow me to extend a

special welcome to the Honorable Dr. Jennifer Westford, Minister of the Public Service who has traveled

from Georgetown especially for this event and to His Excellency Mr. Bayney Karran, Guyana’s Ambassa-

also represented here tonight and I extend a warm welcome to his representative.

Among us tonight are several elected officials from cities, counties and the State of Florida including our

own Caribbean sister, State Representative Hazelle Rogers and Broward County Commissioner brother

Dale V.C. Holness and I ask that you join me in giving our elected officials a true Guyanese welcome. We

also have the pleasure of the company of members of the Caribbean Consular Corps in Florida and to you

I extend a warm welcome as well.

Tonight’s event would not have been possible without the support of our sponsors. This event marks the

first time that there is an official celebration of Guyana’s Republic anniversary in south Florida and the

Guyanese American community here is indebted to the sponsors for providing us an opportunity to cele-

brate this historic milestone in our nation’s history through the display of our rich and diverse culture

and cuisine. A sincere thank you to our sponsors and our souvenir journal advertisers for supporting us

on such short notice and please be assured that we are most appreciative of your kind gesture.

Guyana Nite is being held under the patronage of our Honorary Consul Mr. Ramzan Roshanali who,

along with his dear wife worked tirelessly to ensure the success that tonight has turned out to be. It gives

me great pleasure to extend the planning committee’s heartfelt thanks to Mr. and Mrs. Roshanali for

their hard work and dedication.

I take this opportunity to express my sincere thanks to my colleagues on the planning committee for the

valuable time you contributed and for your creativity. The fruits of your efforts are on display tonight for

all to see and enjoy.

Finally, to you all gathered here tonight I invite you to sit back, relax and enjoy some of the world’s most

tasty cuisine, finest rums, diverse music and interpretive dancing and for those of you who are not Guya-

nese-the world’s most hospitable people.

The National Anthem of

Guyana Words by A. L. Luker

Music by R. C. G. Potter

Dear land of Guyana, of rivers and

plains,

Made rich by the sunshine, and lush

by the rains,

Set gem-like and fair between

mounts and sea-

Your children salute you. dear land

of the free.

Green land of Guyana, our heroes of

yore,

Both bondsman and free, laid their

bones on your shore,

This soil so they hallowed, and from

them are we,

All sons of one mother, Guyana the

free

Great land of Guyana, diverse

though our strains,

We are born of their sacrifice, heirs

of their pains,

And ours is the glory their eyes did

not see -

One Land of six peoples, united and

free.

Dear Land of Guyana, to you will we

give

Our homage, our service each day

that we live;

God guard you, great Mother, and

make us to be

More worthy our heritage - land of

the free.

Song of the Republic Words by Cleveland W. Hamilton

Music by Frank Daniels

From Pakaraima’s peaks of pow’r

To Corentyne’s lush sands,

Her children pledge each faithful hour

To guard Guyana’s lands

To foil the shock of rude invaders

Who’d violate her earth

To cherish and defend forever

The state that gave them birth

We’ll forge a nation’s mighty soul

Construct a nation’s frame

Freedom our everlasting goal

Courage and truth our aim

Unyielding in our quest for peace

Like ancient heroes brave

With strength beyond the slave

Guyana climb that glorious perch

To fame prosperity

Join in the universal search

For world wide comity

Your people whatsoe’er their breed

Their hue or quality

With one firm never changing creed

The nation’s unity
