    1. Jacob, whose name had been changed to Israel, had twelve sons, but Joseph was hisfavorite son. Israel gave him a beautiful coat of many colors, which made his brothers

jealous and angry. (See Gen. 32:28; Gen. 35:22; Gen. 37:34.)

    2. Josephs dreams also made his brothers angry. He dreamed that he and his brotherswere tying sheaves of grain and that his brothers sheaves all bowed toward his. (SeeGen. 37:58.)3. Another time Joseph dreamed that his brothers were stars and his parents were thesun and the moon and that they all bowed to him. This, too, made the brothers angry. They did not want to serve Joseph. (See Gen. 37:911.)4. One time when the brothers were out feeding the sheep, Israel sent Joseph to see howthey were doing. When the brothers saw Joseph, they remembered his dreams, and ten ofthem planned to kill him. But Reuben persuaded them not to. Instead, they grabbed him, tore off his coat, and threw him into a pit. (See Gen. 37:1224.)5. Soon some Ishmaelites were passing by, and the brothers sold Joseph to them. Then thebrothers killed a young goat, dipped Josephs coat in its blood, and showed the coat toIsrael, hoping to convince him that a beast had killed and devoured Joseph. Israel washeartbroken. (See Gen. 37:2535.)6. Joseph was carried away by the Ishmaelites into Egypt where he was sold to a mannamed Potiphar. (See Gen. 37:36.)1 Joseph had been sold as a slave to an Egyptian named Potiphar. Because Joseph was

honest and hardworking, Potiphar appointed him overseer of all that he, Potiphar, had. (SeeGen. 37:36; Gen. 39:16.)2 But Potiphars wicked wife told lies about Joseph. Potiphar believed his wife and threwJoseph into prison for a long time. (See Gen. 39:720.)3 Pharaoh, the king of Egypt, started to have strange dreams. No one knew what thedreams meant. Finally someone said that there was a man in prisonJosephwho couldinterpret dreams. Joseph was brought to see Pharaoh. (See Gen. 41:114.)4 Joseph told Pharaoh that his dreams meant that there would be seven years withplenty of food that would be followed by seven years of famine. Pharaoh believed thatthe Spirit of God was with Joseph, and put him in charge of collecting and storing foodfor the famine. (See Gen. 41:1541.)5 After the years of plenty, there was a famine, but the people of Egypt survivedbecause of the food that Joseph had stored. People from other lands also came to buy

the food. (See Gen. 41:4749, 5357.)6 Israels family was hungry too. He sent his ten oldest sons to Egypt to buy food. WhenJoseph saw his brothers, he knew who they were, but he disguised himself so that theydid not recognize him. When they bowed down to Joseph, his dreams of the grain and the

stars came true. (See Gen. 42:19.)7 Joseph pretended to think that his brothers were spies. He kept Simeon as a hostageso that the others would bring Benjamin to Egypt. Before the nine brothers left, Josephhad all of the money that they had paid for food hidden inside their sacks of corn. (SeeGen. 42:926.)8 When Israels family had eaten all the food that had been brought from Egypt, thenine brothers returned to Egypt with Benjamin. Joseph invited them to dinner at his house. He cried when he saw Benjamin. (See Gen. 43:130.)

9 Finally, Joseph told his brothers who he was, and after they saw that Joseph was notangry with them, they cried and kissed each other. Later all of Israels family came tolive in Egypt. (See Gen. 4446:7.)

Pirates! from The Friend: September 2008, author: Kersten CampbellEllen sniffed the moist sea air as she leaned over the bow of the great sailing vessel. The Hudson had sailed away from the coast of England just weeks before. Ellen had criedthat day as she waved farewell to some of her friends and family in the cheering crowd.

But they were tears of joy. Finally, after years of working and praying, her familysprayers had been answered. They were going to the land of their dreams-America, theland of Zion! Ellen enjoyed the sea. During the few times she was able to slip awayfrom taking care of her younger brothers and sisters, Ellen liked to lean over the bow ofthe ship and let her hair blow wild while she searched for dolphins and other seacreatures. Ellens heart sank as she heard a voice behind her. Ellen! You must come. Itstime for breakfast prayers. Coming, Ellen grumbled. Stepping back from the shipsrailing, she tried her best to straighten her hair. More prayers, Ellen thought as she

hurried toward the hatch that led to the lower part of the ship where her family andall of the Saints ate and slept. Prayers in the morning, prayers at night, prayers byherself, prayers over meals, prayers with the Saints, and prayers with her family. Ellenbit her lip. She didnt want to be ungrateful for the miracle of sailing to America. Butwas there such a thing as too many prayers? As Ellen approached her family, who were already kneeling, she wondered if her mothercould tell what she was thinking. Ellen knelt down and looked at her mothers tired face.Life on the ship had not been easy for her mother. She, and many of the other

passengers, had experienced terrible seasickness during the recent storm that had rockedthe ship for days. Guiltily, Ellen bowed her head when the leader of their companyasked her father to bless the food. She thought of her mother as he asked for aspecial blessing upon those who were sick. The he thanked the Lord for the food andasked Him to protect the Saints that day. After breakfast, Ellen was assigned to carefor her younger sisters on the deck. She took them to a place that was out of the wayso they could watch the sailors rushing around shouting orders at each other. Ellen noticedthe captain near the bow of the ship. He was searching the horizon with his looking glass. She wondered what it would be like to be the captain of a great ship. Suddenly, the

captains face grew pale, and he began to pace back and forth, stopping every few stepsto look through his telescope. What could have upset the captain so much? Ellenwondered. Lets go look at the ocean. She whispered to her sisters, taking their hands inhers. At the bow of the ship, Ellen shaded her eyes and scanned the ocean. At first, allshe could see was a small black dot on the horizon. But soon she saw what had madethe captains face grow so pale.

A large ship was sailing straight toward them at a fast clip. Pirates! whispered a manbeside her. She could hear the fear in his voice. Panic ensued as parents began calling toeach other to find family members and to take the children below. Ellen stood frozen, watching the men scramble around in search of anything that could be used as a

weapon. Get those children away from the bow, yelled a crew member. Ellen shookherself out of her frozen state and led her sisters down the hatch, but as soon as thechildren were with her mother, she rushed back up to the deck. She worried about herfather. Hed never fought anyone in his life, let alone pirates. She wondered what shecould do to help. The passengers on the Hudson grew silent as the pirate ship sailedcloser. Ellen stood next to her father and gasped as the ship came so close she could seethe color of the pirates hair! She looked up at her father and saw his lips moving in asilent prayer. Feeling frightened, she began her own prayer, asking Heavenly Father to

forgive her for her bad attitude that morning. The two ships sailed side by side forwhat seemed like an hour. The pirates and the passengers on the Hudson gazed at eachother in silence. What are they doing? Ellen whispered to her father. Theyre probably wondering ifour ship is worth robbing, her father whispered. They waited in silence until suddenlythere was a shout from the pirate ship. Ellen could feel her fathers body tense. Then,to Ellens surprise, the pirate ship slowly turned around and began sailing away from theHudson. Ellen let out the breath she had been holding. Silently, she offered up a prayer

of thanks, remembering her fathers prayer for safety that morning. The Lord wassurely watching over us this day, her father said, laying a hand on Ellens shoulder andwatching the pirate ship sail away. He surely was, Ellen thought, and then she smiled, realizing she now knew that there was no such thing as too many prayers.
