Provenance and History

Main academic lead: Dr Sandy Reid

Developed over more than 20 years

Many contributors; Edinburgh, Leeds and Cambridge

Started in 1984 in the Department of Pathology, University of Leeds on BBC microcomputers linked to slide projectors.

1993-4 Dr Sandy Reid, then in Leeds, wrote a series of completely new scripts on a program called VIPA that ran on PCs.

Upgraded into templates devised by Kim Whittlestone (Bristol) that ran under Asymmetrix Toolbook.

From 1996 Sandy Reid developed the programs further using Toolbook at the University of Edinburgh

From 2001 onwards the programs were transferred to a web-compatible format (became EROS)

PathCAL was made available as a low-cost online subscription service to UK HE and FE institutions in 2005 in partnership with JISC Collections.

Educational Principles

One idea or concept per page

One topic per CAL

Running score

Focus on applied clinical science

Regular self-test sections with feedback

Variety of question types

Appropriate but not excessive use of animations, video and illustrations

Intro, orientation and reading, objectives, summary, evaluation

Rigorously tested and developed with student users over a number of years

Constant improvement and development

Page 11: Joint Information Systems Committee 4/1/2014 | | Slide 1 Joint Information Systems CommitteeSupporting education and research JISC Conference 2006 PathCAL.

Technical Principles

Web application rather than data service

Based on EROS (Edinburgh Reusable Object Sequencer):

– Authoring: simple PowerPoint-style - drag and drop and templates

– Runtime: web-based, skinnable and web services (in development)

– Analysis: per user, per page, per CAL

Cut down for PathCAL service - no authoring

Uses ATHENS authentication - complex to set up but helpful help-desk! Not cheap though … replacement to ATHENS creating uncertainty

Clean and simple - W3C XHTML (nearing completion)

Resilient service architecture - but dependent on EdLAN

e-Teaching

Teacher decides when, why, how …

Materials embedded in lectures and demonstrations

Learning objects, sequences or whole programs

Gives consistency

Provides more dynamic lecture materials

Embeds materials in local teaching

– Preparation

– During

– Follow-up

Practicals, cases, simulations

Different dynamics to individual learning

Social and collaborative learning:

– Related to pedagogical development - constructivism + exploration and debate

– Student-centred learning

– Related to professional practice

Strategy

Good for us - £££ in an otherwise null market

Good for JC - moving beyond content to process

Good for subscribers - assured high-quality materials

But …

Match between need and provision?

JISC focus on availability rather than development

Sustainability, adaptability, longevity

Alignment with curricula

Autonomy, agency and context-sensitivity
