The American Dream today often refers to one's material wealth which is dependent upon one's abilities and work ethic, and not on a rigid class structure.

Page 9: John Smith

The phrase's meaning has evolved over the course of American history.

For some people, it is the opportunity to achieve greater material prosperity than was possible in their countries of origin.

For others it is the opportunity for their children to grow up and receive an education and its consequent career opportunities.

Page 10: John Smith

It is the opportunity to make individual choices without the restrictions of class, caste, religion, race, or ethnic group.

Page 11: John Smith

For others in this the dream of choice and flexibility, the ability to wake up in the morning and decide to drive, cycle or take public transportation to work.

"America was the place Smith had dreamed of his whole life.

There, his character, determination, and ambition had

propelled him to the top of society. He spent the rest of his life trying to return. Though he

failed, he pointed the way for others, who were drawn by the

dream that opportunity was here for anyone who dared seize it . . .

Smith founded more than a colony. He gave birth to the

American dream."-T. Hoobler
