DECATUR – You name theindustry and Macon Resourceshas helped someone find a jobwithin it.

Macon Resources, Inc. is anon-profit agency that providescomprehensive services thatpromote growth and independencein children and adults withdisabilities. From food service toentry level management positionsto manufacturing, MaconResources regularly assistsindividuals with disabilities infinding and holding down a long-term job.

“The whole goal of ourprogram is to find long-termemployment opportunities forpeople with disabilities,” said

Robert Brice, lead communityemployment specialist at MaconResources. “We service peoplewith a variety of different abilitiesor disabilities – it could bephysical, a mental illness, or acognitive learning disability.”

All of the clients at MaconResources are referred by thelocal office of the IllinoisDepartment of Human Services’division of rehabilitation services.Once referred, a client goesthrough an orientation, and staffwork with the individual to learnabout abilities, goals and workinterest and past history, Bricesaid.

“What’s cool about theprogram is that we tailor theprogram to fit that person’sneeds,” he said. “We could have aguy with a master’s degree who

has a mental illness but nowthings are going much better forhim, and he’ll have differentneeds than a person with learningdisabilities with a high schooldegree.”

Services are as much gearedtoward job retention as jobplacement, if not more, Bricesaid. Macon Resources maintainsmonthly verbal communicationwith an employer after anindividual begins a job there, andemployers fill out work areaassessments to evaluate anemployee’s performance.

“We want to make sure it’s agood fit for the employer andindividual,” Brice said. “We canalso provide a job coach ifsomeone needs initial training on

plans with a guidancecounselor or alumnirepresentative, an adultconsidering a careerchange should consult aprofessional, be it anemployment placementspecialist or someone whoworks in the field youdesire to enter, whenbeginning a job search. Aprofessional can providean accurate portrayal ofthe field and give adviceor tips as to how best toget your foot in the door.

• Do a self-examination.Arguably the biggestbright spot of getting laidoff is the chance to do

some self-examination asto what it is you liked,disliked or both about yourold position. Too oftenworkers get caught up inthe commitments thatcome with being an adultand ignore whether or notthey're happy with theirjob. But a layoff allowstime for a careful self-examination, one thatshould allow you thechance to avoid findingyourself in an unfulfillingcareer that only pays thebills.

• Get organized. Finding ajob isn't easy. Finding onein an economic climate

rife with layoffs is evenless so. Have an organizedplan of action, including adaily commitment tolearning about your newfield. Treat the time offnot as a chance tocompletely relax, but achance to research yournew field, find out what ittakes to succeed anddevote daily time each dayto looking for work.

• Explore freelanceopportunities. A resumewith large chunks of timewhere you didn't work isnever attractive.Successfully transitioningto a new career might

require you do some workfor free. Oftentimes, eventhe most successfulfreelancers spend largechunks of time doing workthey're not going to bepaid for. That's a part offreelancing. However,staying active, even ifyou're not getting paid, isa good way to show you'reserious and committed toyour new field. •

Because of the current stateof the economy and job market,more individuals have beenworking with Macon Resources tosecure a job locally, and MaconResources is always looking toadd to their list of partneringemployers, Brice said.

“The number of job seekershas increased, which is a benefitfor employers, to have a biggercandidate pool to choose from,”he said. “Motivation is a hugefactor in success at a job, both forpeople with disabilities andwithout, and what we have seenfrom our clients is that they areloyal, dependable and verymotivated.”

Brice noted that often, peoplewith disabilities are new on thejob scene, which makes themmore likely to be excited aboutworking, motivated to do a goodjob and to have good performanceon the job, like showing up ontime. And with incentives like taxcredits available for companieswho hire individuals withdisabilities, now is one of the besttimes to add employees, Bricesaid.

DECATUR – Whilepredictions stand that theU.S. economy has begunto rebound, the job marketfor many in central Illinoisstill looks bleak.

But one field thatseems to continually behiring, regardless of thejob market nation-wide, ishealth care.

Natalie Clark,recruiter for DecaturMemorial Hospital, saidthat the hospital regularlyattends community jobfairs.

“We like to have apresence in thecommunity as well as weare one of largestemployers and have

several job vacancies. Sowe want to be out there forany applicants that wantto come to DMH,” shesaid.

Nursing is one healthcare field that isexperiencing exponentialgrowth and continuingneed, and nurses in allspecialties will be indemand in the future,according to the U.S.Bureau of Labor Statistics.Other areas in health carethat are in demandinclude pharmacy,rehabilitation therapy andoccupational therapy,Clark said.

“The demand (forthose fields) is larger thanthe supply,” she said.

Clark said she hasfound that many of the

positions that areregularly open at DecaturMemorial Hospital aren’tnecessarily filled at jobfairs because they are sospecialized. However, shenoted that the hospital andother central Illinoishealth care organizationsstill continue to haveopenings in other areas,and she encouraged jobseekers to showcase theirpositive qualities whenattending job fairs.

“We look for someonethat is willing to come towork, dependable,professional,” she said.

Clark said she believesthat most companies arefocusing on onlineapplications and jobpostings, rather thanadvertising in print

publications and acceptingmailed job applications.Because of this, sheencouraged job applicantsto do their research beforejob fairs.

“Be familiar with theorganization, their Website and job openings theyhave so (job seekers) cantake advantage of the time

and can talk with us aboutsomething in particularthey’re interested in,” shesaid.

in the current economy. Now it'stime to apply what you've learnedin the classroom and put it togood use in the working world.

But this is the big leaguesnow. Every day, your skills will beput to the test, and supervisorsand other employees will rely onyou. Don't let that scare you,though. Follow these lessons andyou'll have an easy time climbingthe corporate ladder.Lesson #1: Prepare to pay yourdues. Yes, that means you mayhave to go on the occasionalcoffee run, send out a massmailing or file till your fingersbleed. Don't worry -- everyone hasto do it. Seize menial tasks as anopportunity to learn what goes on

behind the scenes or bond withanother "newbie."

Lesson #2: Listen and absorb. Seehow the company does its job.Figure out the chain of commandand what it takes to get thingsdone.

Lesson #3: Dress for the job youwant, not for the job you have. Incollege, you can roll out of bedand head to class in yourpajamas, but that isn't quite thebest wardrobe strategy in theworkplace. Not sure what towear? Stick with conservative andclassic pieces in solid colors. Youcan also use your boss as a modelof how you should dress.

Lesson #4: Avoid office politics.It's guaranteed that the office

gossip will tell you who's datingwhom, or you might hear a fewchoice words about your boss --even on your first day. Sure, it'sfine to store such information inthe back of your head so you canlearn about coworkers'personalities, office dynamics,and who's in a bad mood, butdon't say anything that can beadded to the rumor mill. Lesson #5: Watch what you sayand do. That means you shouldmind your manners. Leaveinappropriate stories and jokesfor your social life. Don't usecompany e-mail to forward jokesor chain letters to friends; do thaton your own time, using your ownpersonal e-mail account.

Lesson #6: Ask questions. You'renew in your position. so don't beafraid to ask questions. It willhelp you understand the company,the hierarchy, and what it takes tomake the company run.

Lesson #7: Find a mentor. Maybeit's someone who has been thereyears or someone who has the jobyou want. Find a person who canshow you the ropes or tell youhow they got started in thebusiness. Some companies even

offer formal mentoring programsthat involve mentor lunches,meetings and more.

Lesson #8: Volunteer forsomething that's not in your jobdescription. Maybe you are anadministrative assistant at anewspaper and the researchdepartment needs help fact-checking a story. Or perhaps thelegal department at yourcompany needs extra hands. Byvolunteering for work beyond thescope of your position, you areshowing that you are willing totake on anything. But just makesure you don't get so swampedthat you can't finish your ownassigned tasks first.
