Children’s services are also provided from the Royal Alexandra Hospital for Sick Children in Brighton, but a new children’s hospital is currently being built on the Royal Sussex County site. This scheme is being developed using the Private Finance Initiative as a method of designing, building and maintaining the new facility. Financial close has been reached with our private partner, Kajima who started the building project during the summer of 2004 with a planned opening in the spring of 2007. Some medical out-patient facilities are provided from the Brighton General Hospital. The General is a former nineteenth century workhouse that is no longer appropriate for providing in-patient health services in the twenty-first century. The Trust also provides a range of other small services in satellite locations including some out-patient services at Hove Polyclinic, some surgery at Lewes Victoria Hospital and kidney services at renal units at Bexhill, Worthing and Crawley. Brighton and Sussex University Hospitals NHS Trust is a very large public sector employer, with approximately 5,800 staff. A fifth operating theatre was opened in 2004 and a 36 bedded Treatment Centre will open on the site in July 2006 to provide orthopaedic operations. The Hurstwood Park Neurological Centre on the Princess Royal Hospital site has recently been upgraded with an investment of over £2million. Plans are being put in place to relocate the Hurstwood Park Neurological Centre to the Royal Sussex County Hospital campus, subject to public consultation.

The redevelopment of the Trust’s two main sites in Brighton and Haywards Heath continues to be a major part of the overall acute services strategy which will ultimately result in the closure of peripheral sites. These developments will deliver ♦ acute services on two main sites ♦ improved environment to support the delivery of health care ♦ modern, purpose built clinical facilities ♦ up-to-date IT for the management of patient care, ♦ improved access to the site for patients, visitors and staff ♦ increased car parking facilities and other transport initiatives ♦ effective use of resources, including MRI and CT scanning facilities. The development of a walk-in Centre in Brighton will also be considered as part of these developments. Brighton & Sussex Medical School The School is an equal partnership between the Universities of Sussex and Brighton together with NHS staff throughout the South East Region and is fully committed to the principles of Tomorrow’s Doctors; it endorses the value of medical education in a multi-professional context, and promotes the highest possible standards in its three pivotal components of teaching, clinical practice, and research (both fundamental and applied). The Medical School has clinical teaching facilities within the Medical Education Centre at the Royal Sussex County Hospital (RSCH) and at the Princess Royal Hospital (PRH), Haywards Heath. In addition, two new teaching buildings and a dedicated research building have been erected at the Universities’ adjacent sites at Falmer. The Clinical Imaging Science Centre is also located at Falmer, comprising a 1.5T magnetic resonance imaging system along with a positron emission tomography system with integrated computed tomography (PET-CT). A clinical investigation and research unit has recently been constructed at the Royal Sussex County hospital. A first student annual intake of 135 students was in the Autumn of 2003, and the School typically receives in excess of 2000 applicants for places. Students spend the first two years based at the universities’ campuses at Falmer, but with significant clinical exposure throughout the period, particularly in primary care. During year 3 the main focus is based on hospital-based specialties at the RSCH and at the PRH, while years 4 and 5 are spent obtaining further basic science training and gaining experience in other medical disciplines. Year 5 is mainly based around regional attachments and provides experience in “shadowing” house officers. Our performance We are performing to a high standard in many areas. Independent endorsements of the quality of our services include: § In the Healthcare Commission’s annual health check for 2007/08 the quality of our

services were rated excellent.

§ According to this year’s Good Hospital Guide published by Dr Foster, our Hospital Standardised Mortality Ratio is significantly lower than expected making our survival rates amongst the best in England.

§ We are consistently performing amongst the very best for the national A&E

standard for treating or admitting at least 98 per cent of patients within four hours. § Earlier than required we delivered the national standard to treat 90 per cent of

admitted and 95 per cent of non-admitted patients within a maximum of 18 weeks of being referred to the hospital.

§ Reducing the numbers of avoidable infections on our wards is our number one priority

and since national targets for MRSA and C. difficile were introduced we have been achieving a steady decline in the number of cases of both.

§ Our maternity services were ranked the third best in England by the Healthcare

Commission and as part of the Surrey and Sussex Neonatal Network our Special Care Baby Units have the best survival rates in England.

§ In 2007/08 we achieved financial breakeven and we are on track to deliver a year-

on-year financial surplus from 2008/09. Our future: Regional Centre for Teaching, Trauma and Tertiary Care (3 Ts programme) We are progressing plans to develop the Royal Sussex County Hospital campus as the regional centre for Teaching, Trauma and Tertiary Care (the 3Ts programme). The primary objectives of this programme are to move the regional centre for Neurosciences from the PRH site to the RSCH site; move medical and cancer inpatient wards into facilities that are modern, welcoming and fit for purpose; and develop BSUH as the Type One Trauma Centre for Sussex and the South East. The Department of Imaging and Nuclear Medicine is going to be located in the new 3T building. The Department The Department of Nuclear Medicine is within the Department of Imaging & Nuclear Medicine, which is within the Division of Specialised Services. There is a co-ordinated Nuclear Medicine service to the whole Trust. The nuclear medicine service is provided on two sites: The Royal Sussex County Hospital (RSCH), Brighton and Princess Royal Hospital (PRH), Haywards Heath. The RSCH in Brighton is the main site and is also the main teaching site for the Medical School. The PRH also provides substantial clinical input into the Medical School and postgraduate teaching. Nuclear medicine at the RSCH has the benefit of three gamma cameras and radiopharmacy. A new state of art dedicated cardiac gamma camera was installed in September 2008 funded by the Clinical Investigation Research Unit (CIRU) project to build up research infrastructure and expand clinical nuclear cardiology service. An in-vitro counter was installed in 2001. The department at the PRH has the benefit of one dual-head gamma camera (Adac/Philips Forte gamma camera).

In-patients account for approximately 10% of the workload and there is a heavy paediatric demand. General practitioner access is also encouraged. The current workload is >8000 examinations per annum including FDG PET/CT, bone, static and dynamic renal, lung, endocrine, tumour imaging, nuclear cardiology, brain imaging and lymphatic and haematopoietic imaging, infection/inflammation imaging studies and in vitro non-imaging studies. More than 800 paediatric studies are performed each year. Approximately 250 I-131 radionuclide therapy doses and consultations for benign thyroid pathology are provided by the nuclear medicine consultants, who are also involved in the multi-disciplinary management of thyroid cancer. More than 20 thyroid cancer therapies are performed each year in the Oncology Department. There is a plan to develop other specialised tumour radionuclide therapeutic services. Some specialised radionuclide therapies, including bone palliation and radiation synovectomy, are also performed in the Nuclear Medicine Department. A weekly thyroid clinic is held dealing with patients with benign thyroid conditions. A multidisciplinary FNA thyroid clinic is held monthly together with a cytologist and endocrine surgeon. Bone mineral densitometry is currently provided off-site but reported by a nuclear medicine consultant. The Trust has a wide range of tertiary services: a renal transplant and dialysis unit, cardio-thoracic unit and neurosciences centre. The Sussex Oncology Centre is on the RSCH site and Brighton is also a designated cancer centre. The demand placed upon the Nuclear Medicine Department by these Departments is likely to increase further. A mobile PET/CT scanning service commenced in June 2004, on behalf of the Sussex Cancer Network, using a suitable pad at the Sussex Nuffield Hospital. In 2007, the Medical School established a Clinical Imaging Science Centre (CISC) located at Falmer to include a fixed PET/CT and MRI for education and research as well as for NHS patients, so clinical PET-CT service is provided at the Farmer campus at the University. From: December 2004 Specialist Registrar in Nuclear Medicine and Radionuclide Radiology We have approval, and NTNs, for 2 nuclear medicine ST3, but central funding for one ST3 post (4 years training programme) or ST6 post. This is Brighton based training scheme within London Deanery in conjunction with Kent Surrey and Sussex Deanery. F2 Training Post We have also received approval and funding for F2 post in the nuclear medicine/academic imaging which commenced in August 2006. This post provides a novel opportunity for involvement in the development and delivery of image-based medical education by identification and follow-up of clinical cases for educational use and assistance with interactive teaching sessions, analogous to a position as anatomy demonstrator.

We are also contributing to F1 teaching.

The nuclear medicine offers Student Selective Component Module: ”Research goes nuclear“ and contributes to the undergraduates teaching. Academic Clinical Lecturer This is a new post under the National Institutes for Health Research (NIHR) lectureship programme. The post, which is to be advertised in the near future, will allow a Radiologist or Nuclear Physician who has already completed a research degree (or equivalent training) and a substantial period of clinical training to have protected time to develop academic skills. Applicants should be Radiologists or Nuclear Physicians in training who can demonstrate potential for development as a clinical academic. Candidates should be within 2 years of completing higher specialist training or dual accreditation. The post holder will spend 50% of their time undertaking research and teaching at BSMS and 50% in clinical training at the

Brighton and Sussex University Hospitals Trust (BSUHT). Research activities will be based at the newly established BSMS Clinical Imaging Sciences Centre comprising 64-slice CT-PET and 1.5T MR imaging systems. Specialist Registrar Radiology trainees BSUH offers a full 5-year rotation that gives opportunity to gain FRCR and a CCST in Radiology. The post offers training in all aspects of the RCR core curriculum and gives opportunity for subspecialty training during the final year. The training programme comprises modular system based firms in Breast, Nuclear Medicine, Chest & Oncology, Urology & O&G, Neuroradiology, Paediatrics, Musculo-skeletal, Head & Neck & Gastrointestinal Radiology and Vascular & Cardiac Radiology. The programme is recognised for sub-specialty training in Radionuclide Radiology. The training posts include an Academic Clinical Fellow in Radiology.

DUTIES OF THE POST The training programme is provided at the Royal Sussex County Hospital, Princess Royal Hospital and Clinical Imaging Science Centre at Falmer Campus University with additional training being provided at other centres when required. Currently, BSUH has two posts that are approved by the Joint Committee on Higher Medical Training of the Royal College of Physicians and the Royal College of Radiologists and PMETB. Educational Training Programme This is a training programme in nuclear medicine aimed either at trainees without initial experience of nuclear medicine, progressing over 4 years to fulfil the requirements for a Certificate of Completion of Training in Nuclear Medicine, or for radiology registrars wishing to obtain further nuclear medicine experience required for the practice of radionuclide imaging (1 year) or for the completion of dual radiology and nuclear medicine CCSTs (2 years). Training will cover the published curriculum of the PMETB (or radionuclide radiology curriculum as appropriate) and completion of the MSc in Nuclear Medicine will be encouraged. Training will be consultant led, involving a combination of daily consultant reporting sessions, supervised clinical experience, tutorials and didactic lectures. Technical training and experience is available by virtue of formal and informal sessions with physicists, technicians, biochemists and pharmacists. Training in cardiac stress procedures and advanced life support will be also be provided. Involvement in audit and research projects within the departments will be encouraged as well as attendance and participation at academic meetings within and outside the Trusts. Extra training will be available in PET-CT at the PET Centre, Guy’s &St Thomas’, London, paediatric neurological nuclear medicine at Great Ormond Street Hospital and other London centres and radionuclide therapy at Royal Marsden Hospital, Sutton and Guy’s &St Thomas’ Hospital, London when appropriate. In addition, the usual educational and research opportunities of established post-graduate training hospitals will be available as well as participation in departmental management meetings and teaching of postgraduate medical and technical staff. Clinical Responsibilities

The Specialist Registrar will be responsible to the Consultants in Nuclear Medicine and deputise for them as required. Clinical responsibilities within the Department of Nuclear Medicine will include:- (a) Checking requests to ensure that appropriate tests have been booked and that

adequate clinical information is available. (b) Assessment of patients attending for investigation or treatment. (c) Administration of radiopharmaceuticals and involvement in the clinical aspects of tests. (d) General medical cover for patients while in the Department. (e) Checking the results of investigations before patients leave the Department. (f) Reporting (under supervision), the results of investigations. (g) General liaison with clinicians and with other diagnostic departments Multidisciplinary meetings There are strong links with the other parts of the Department of Diagnostic Imaging with emphasis on the multimodality approach to imaging and participation in multidisciplinary meetings. Annual and Study Leave Junior staff is expected to discuss plans for leave with members of their department well in advance or any proposed leave. Research The successful applicant will be expected to undertake research in the field of nuclear medicine under the supervision of the nuclear medicine consultants. Collaboration can be arranged with other departments in the Medical School and the two parent universities and other research institutions. The innovative use imaging in medical education has become a hallmark of BSMS. Imaging is used extensively in years 1 & 2 of the undergraduate curriculum to enhance the learning of anatomy and other basic sciences. In years 3-5, the emphasis moves to the role of imaging in clinical management and research. Several image-based Student Selected Components are also available. Teaching facilities include computer suites that serve as “imaging laboratories” in which students are presented with data from all imaging modalities using technology developed from PACS. Purpose-designed interactive software allows students to answer image-based questions with immediate but anonymous feedback. Imaging is a priority area within the BSMS research strategy, especially as related to Vascular Biology, Cancer Biology, Infection, Immunity and Inflammation and Neuromuscular Biology and disorders. BSMS is currently establishing a Clinical Imaging Science Centre (CISC) located at Falmer. The CISC will comprise integrated Positron Emission Tomography/ Computed Tomography (PET/CT) and a 1.5T magnetic resonance (MR) system, primarily for research and education but with some clinical work in addition. The CISC aims to encourage research interaction between clinical and basic science and stimulate collaboration between groups both within BSMS and the Universities of Sussex and Brighton. Audit The successful applicant will be expected to understand principles of audit and to undertake an audit project within the Department. Assessment of Progress Local by Educational Supervisor at six monthly intervals. External assessment annually by Regional Adviser.

DETAILS OF POST-GRADUATE TEACHING Study Leave Applications for Study Leave to attend appropriate courses of instruction and to prepare for and sit examinations leading to an approved qualification, will be considered in the light of the Terms and Conditions of Service for Hospital Medical and Dental Staff (England and Wales) and study leave guidelines. Applications supported by a consultant should be submitted to the Postgraduate Centre no later than six weeks prior to the dates of the proposed leave. Employees will be informed accordingly via the Postgraduate Centre. Applications will not be considered in retrospect. THE SUSSEX POST-GRADUATE MEDICAL CENTRE - BRIGHTON The Audrey Emerton Building Education Centre was built by Brighton & Sussex University Hospitals NHS Trust to create a stimulating and friendly environment for the education and training of healthcare professionals. The building forms part of the Brighton and Sussex Medical School which is one of four new medical schools created as part of the Government’s strategy to increase the number of qualified doctors in the UK working in the NHS. In its first year it became the most popular choice for medical students in the UK. The Sussex Postgraduate Centre is based within the Audrey Emerton Building and provides professional expertise and support for medical and dental trainees working within the Trust and the wider community. The Centre ensures competence and assesses trainee performance. Tutors are available for careers information, advice and counselling. The Centre also provides a number of Royal College of Surgeons practical training courses, details of that are available on request. THE MID SUSSEX POSTGRADUATE MEDICAL CENTRE – HAYWARDS HEATH The Education Centre at the PRH is located on the second floor opposite the Library. The centre has two lecture theatres: one seats 150 (and is divisible into two separate seminar rooms each fully equipped with state of the art audio visual facilities) and the other seats 80. Each has a live link to the operating theatres. In addition there are two further seminar rooms, one of which is a multi-purpose teaching room suitable for clinical skills workshops. This room is also equipped with an interactive whiteboard and network points for some (medical) IT training.

LIBRARY SERVICES BRIGHTON AND SUSSEX UNIVERSITY HOSPITALS NHS TRUST

The main library is situated at the Audrey Emerton Building, Royal Sussex County Hospital. It is one of the largest and busiest in south Thames and has been assessed as “outstanding” by the Regional Director of Library Services. It has approximately 30,000 books as well as a collection of electronic books. Approximately 300 printed journals are available, as well as a large collection of electronic journals covering all clinical areas. There is an interlibrary loans service and 24-hour access to the library for members. Many databases, including Medline, Cochrane and Embase, are available to users, or searches can be carried out by helpful and friendly librarians, who have been trained in searching for evidence-based material. The Internet is available in the library and there is access to Microsoft Office, including Word and Powerpoint. The library’s website (www.bsuh.nhs.uk/library) includes links to databases eg. PubMed (Medline) and The Cochrane Library, 1400 electronic journals, book catalogues, electronic books, Royal Colleges and information on how to critically appraise the literature. Photocopying and printing facilities are available in the Library. Library staff offer training in one-to-one or group sessions in the workplace on the following: searching the Internet at introductory and intermediate level, searching evidence-based sources on the Internet, electronic journals and electronic books and literature searching techniques on healthcare databases. Training on critical appraisal skills is also available on a small group basis. There is a library at Princess Royal Hospital with 24-hour access available to members. The Library holds a diverse range of books and reports, over 140 print journals, databases, electronic journals and electronic books. There is 24-hour access to a small library at the Royal Alexandra Hospital. The library is managed by a part-time professional librarian and has a collection of current books (for reference only) and 2 computers giving access to the Internet and Microsoft Office.

GENERAL INFORMATION Emergencies The SpR accepts that he/she will also perform duties in occasional emergencies and unforeseen circumstances at the request of the appropriate Consultant, in consultation where practicable with his/her colleagues both senior and junior. It has been agreed between the profession and the Department that additional commitments arising under this subsection are exceptional and, in particular, that juniors should not be required to undertake work of this kind for prolonged periods or on a regular basis. Main Conditions • The appointment is subject to the National Terms and Conditions of Service for Hospital

Medical and Dental Staff (England and Wales) and to the General Whitley Council of Conditions of Service

• Medical clearance is required prior to taking up the post; • Doctors must be registered with the General Medical Council, and it is advisable to be a

member of a Medical Defence Organisation; • The appointment is whole-time and salary is that of a Specialist Registrar. • The post is educationally approved for training. Other Facilities - Brighton The Junior Medical Staff have their own mess. There are various facilities available through the ‘Better Deal for Staff’ Scheme, details of which are available from the Personnel Department. An extensive shopping area is easily within reach and there is an adequate public transport service from a stop outside the Hospital. Good train services exist to London. The Hospital is situated a few minutes walk from the seafront and Brighton Marina. Other Facilities – Haywards Heath Good social club facilities exist. There is an active junior doctor’s mess. Regular lunchtime meetings, during which lunch is provided, are held on a monthly basis. The Mess Committee arranges social functions. Sports facilities on site include a swimming pool, tennis courts and bowling green. An extremely wide range of other recreational facilities is available in the area. Haywards Heath is situated approximately 15 miles north of the City of Brighton and Hove at the foot of the South Downs with easy access to London and Gatwick Airport. Brighton itself is a busy academic, commercial and industrial centre, as well as being a popular holiday

resort. Inland, the landscape is mostly rural and includes some of the most attractive South Downs countryside. Lewes, the county town of East Sussex is a short drive away.
