MEETING MINUTES Dennis Lowry

February 17, 2016, 2016 Call to Order: By Jeff Mate, PCC President.

Visitors:

Andreas from Kit Productions flies Quads, and is the Chief Field Engineer, so he’ll be flying a bunch. They develop software to follow skiers and film.

Keith is a first time visitor who flies quads and Helicopters. He wants to learn flying fixed wing planes.

Tim, a previous member heavy into warbirds has decided to return.

Raffle: From J&M, a Horizon Hobby AS3Xtra.

The January Minutes were approved.

Membership Report: Hovering towards 85 today.

New Members: Three. Membership is now at 85.

Treasury Report: The treasury is healthy.

New Business:

A Board Meeting is scheduled for 2/21 at Round Table Pizza in San Jose.

March meeting will be in Chetcuti Room on March 16.

Old Business:

AMA recommends registering with FAA if you fly RC. Registration is $5.00 if done by February 19. You must put your registration number in, or on your plane, so that if it crashes somewhere, anywhere, the Feds will know where to find you and return it to you.

Dave Santana showed a connector-joiner-angle for the sun shade structure: A very ingenious yet simple connector.

Events: None

Safety: Tics are back in season.

Hits and Misses: None.

Show and Tell:

Matt showed a Hyperion X Plus hot liner sloping screamer. It goes 200 mph and its all Carbon Fiber. He sent a paint pattern in and had the new airplane back with that scheme in three weeks. Look for Uri composites in Oregon. It uses a 17.5 x 17 folding prop.

Adjourned

Minutes by Lowry.

Field Safety: Warning: the grounds at the field are pretty wet, and SOFT. Do not drive off the driveway and parking area, you will have a greater chance to sink into the soft mud. Stay off the green area! Most towing insurance will not cover the cost to get you unstuck off non-paved roadways. You have to pay for the service yourself.

REWARD FOR LOST BATTERY One of our members had lost a lipo battery during an un-scheduled off field landing. When he arrived at the site of the off field landing, the battery had left the scene of accident! It was alleged "the battery slipped unseen out from between the foam and the plastic battery door and fell into the high plants just a little south of the approach end of the runway, and roughly in alignment with the runway. Maybe a little bit east."

The Lipo battery, a 4S2200, was recently purchased from J&M Hobby House. The connector had been changed so there is insulation tape on the wires. If you happened to find such battery, please contact Don at [email protected] A $10.00 reward is offered by Don for recovering the battery.

POST FLIGHT : FUEL Jeff Mate

The following list of post flight procedures are offered as a basic checklist and a general guide to identify potential problems before they become real problems. Allowances have to be made for each type of aircraft, engine, airframe, radio, etc., but as a newcomer, I have found this procedure useful.

• Turn off receiver and transmitter. • Place transmitter in impound area and return freq. pin. • Drain fuel tank. • Clean model, this is an opportunity to look for:

* Punctures or abrasions in covering. * Hinges, especially those exposed to the exhaust flow. The

bond between the hinges and connecting surfaces can

loosen when saturated with oil. • Check airframe for cracks or dents that could indicate

internal damage. • Inspect all engine mounts and muffler, and, if applicable,

nose gear bolts and throttle linkage. • Check fuel tank area for leaks. Latex rubber saturated with

oil is bad news if located above or adjacent to the foam insulation around the receiver.

• Fuselage can conceal potential trouble such as wiring obscured by insulation or loose parts or debris. The landing gear should get some attention.

• The prop and spinner are a special safety concern. Check thoroughly.

• Servos deserve an occasional check to determine that the bolts, screws, linkage connectors and keepers are secure.

• Prior to leaving the field I make sure I take everything that I brought with me including the trash.

• The last one out gets to lock up. • Back at the hangar, to discharge, recharge or cycle

batteries can be considered as well as the condition of the glow starter and 12 V batteries.

REVERSING EPOXY RESIN CRYSTALLIZATION

Brian Chan

The left resin is crystallized, the right resin is restored. Ever had this happened to you?

Page 4: Jeff Mate , more rain! Somehow the rain is caused …2 • PCC Swap Meet. Host at our PCC Field. This event needs a Host. Date can be June, July or August. • SAM 21 Texaco Event.

Crystallization of Epoxy Resin Crystallization is defined as the formation of solid crystals from a uniform liquid solution. It occurs naturally with foods such as honey, with snowflakes and with minerals. This is the same phenomenon that can occur with epoxy resins and some curing agents.

The Cause Epoxy resin crystallization can be caused by high purity resins, moisture, temperature changes, low viscosity resins or impure additives. In a clear resin, it could appear as tiny specks dispersed throughout, cloudiness or a complete solid. Black or filled resins make it harder to detect. As crystals form, they tend to settle to the bottom of the container since they are denser than the liquid. Eventually, this can lead to the entire contents turning solid.

Crystallization is not an indication of defective material. It can occur in random containers from the same batch. It is impossible to predict or eliminate.

The Cure There should not be any attempt to use crystallized resin until it has been re-heated as it will likely lead to issues with curing or finished physical properties.

The following recommendations for resolving crystallization apply only to products manufactured by Epoxies, Etc...

• Loosen cover of affected container. • Heat contents to 45 – 65 deg C (113 – 150 deg F) for 1-2

hours in a well ventilated area. • Larger containers such as 5 gallon pails may require

several hours • Mix or stir the contents of the container and visually

inspect to make sure there is no evidence of crystallization.

• Pay particular attention to the bottom of the container for any residue. Keep in the oven for longer periods if needed.

• Clean all spouts, spigots and closures of any resin build-up.

• Replace cover tightly and store at or above 25 deg C (77 deg F).

*I have tried this and it is better to soak the epoxy in a bucket of hot water than using the microwave oven!
