First, thank you everyone for joining us this morning / afternoon. My name is xxxxxxxx, and I am the xxxx(title) with WAM!NET, a division of SAVVIS Communications.
Everyone is paying a lot of attention to JDF and the potential benefits of automating and streamlining prepress and print production workflows. What is JDF, what are some of the issues surrounding JDF and how can it be implemented? Those are a few of the things I would like to take some time to review in this presentation today.
JDF is an XML (Extensible Markup Language) standard or specification. A markup is a tag or a code that identifies information. In print production, tags such as trapping and approval attached to a page would provide instructions for trapping and tell you the page needs to be approved before final processing. It could even have instructions about where or to whom to send for approval. Extensible means XML tags are unlimited and can be supplemented with other files to further define the instructions.JDF automates workflows by passing instructions and job parameters between devices and systems. This is only possible if all involved vendor systems use the same tags or speak a universal language. This is what JDF does. It provides standard tags so all systems and MIS functions speak print fluently. JDF can then be integrated into workflow software, project management systems and other system drivers. JDF enables and automates processes. It can carry a print job from creation to production to distribution, including the detailed instructions for creative, prepress, press, post press and delivery. JDF provides portability between different platforms and lets you extend your workflow beyond your enterprise to include vendors, partners and clients.JDF eliminates manual processes, reducing the opportunity for errors and allowing for faster collaboration and reduced production times.JDF enhances customer experiences by maintaining client profiles of special job requirements that can carry across the entire workflow. The JDF Inter-Enterprise Workflow is connectivity. This includes customers, partners, corporate departments, and all those within the supply chain, both inside a location or at multiple sites.
JDF intends to bridge the gap between production and other information systems like MIS, IN THE JDF MODEL.
However,by opening up communication between multiple enterprises security becomes a major issue. Additional information such as planning, scheduling, process results, job status and job tracking generated upstream in MIS will be exchanged in addition to the content. This will increase the need for higher performance data transmission.
Lets talk about your options for building an inter-enterprise workflow between your clients, vendors and partners. You can either build it yourself or utilize a managed service provider.
You can build it yourself which will include:
Selecting a file transfer application that can handle JDF content. Purchasing a server to host your file transfer application. Designing a wide-area network to connect your clients, vendors and partners
Remember, if youre going to design your own network, youll need to purchase bandwidth, network connectivity equipment. Youll need to coordinate with client, vendor and partner IT departments. Youll either need to install a network management system to monitor the network and youll need to hire staff to manage and support the network. Youll also need to set-up a redundant system as a back-up for your workflow.
Or use the Internet which has inherent security and performance limitations. Or you could utilize a Managed Service, which with a single connection to a managed network, you can have secure access to your partners, vendors and clients, many of which may already be on our network. WAM!NET Media Services provides LAN like access to JDF enabled partners within your supply chain.
The services model is growing. Industry analyst, Gistics, estimates that the services model will soon overtake standalone hardware and software sales in the content management market.
Services allow rapid implementation because they are typically offered on a subscription basis. You dont need to spend design time, wait for equipment purchases and approvals, or coordinate installations. Service providers such as WAM!NET have a model in place that can be quickly deployed.
Through overall cost reductions in infrastructure and manual processes, service providers customers often find 100% payback in as little as one year.
Because service providers are set up to scale they easily provide you with additional content and workflow services.
WAM!NET and SAVVIS now provide the worlds largest media services utility automating global inter-enterprise media workflows. The WAM!NET Media Services Platform is a unique combination of infrastructure, services, applications and APIs that enable inter-enterprise JDF workflows that easily adapt to organization and process changes without rebuilding and reinvesting in new technology.
WAM!NET Direct provides LAN like access to JDF enabled partners within your supply chain and brings all pieces of your supply chain together. All clients, vendors and partners, regardless of location, can function on the same utility and take part in the same digital workflow.
At the base of our Media Services Utility is the fully-managed SAVVIS network and infrastructure spanning 45 countries with 23 data centers worldwide.
In the middle of the utility are the WAM!NET content management and distribution services. Our services are supported by a patented file transfer technology and enable our customers to connect to their community and workflow partners through a single connection.
At the highest level are workflow applications integrated through our open standard XML APIs. One of these is WAM!NET Direct! JDF, which provides inter-enterpise JDF content distribution.
Direct! JDF allows users to fully automate the distribution of JDF content through the WAM!NET Media Services Platform. With a single connection to our managed network, users have secure access to partners, vendors and clients, many of which are already on our network. Registration content is securely packaged for deliveryRegistration content is repackaged with JDF instructions for delivery to Telco PrintingRegistration content is retrieved according to JDF instructions and routed to specified devices
WAM!NET adds an additional layer of security by transmitting information across the SAVVIS/WAM!NET private managed network.
Lets review an example that WAM!NET is demonstrating in the JDF Pavillian:
Mantis Cellular is a multinational corporation based in Manhattan. They are in the process of rolling out a new registration program for their cellular subsidiary. This program requires the creation of a printed registration form. All creative and print purchasing is done in their Manhattan office. Their creative department uses Adobes creative suite for their promotional design.
Though Mantis Cellular uses several printing companies throughout the US, Telco Printing, a digital print facility specializing in quick turn around digital output, will be printing the new registration form for this program. Mantis Cellular will be sending the new registration form to Telco Printing via the WAM!NET Media Services Utility.
By adopting JDF into this workflow we are able to automate a print job from creation to print production, including detailed instructions, eliminating manual processes and the opportunity for errors.
In this example, the Mantis Cellular Creative Department used Adobes JDF Creation Tool to prepare the JDF-enabled Mantis Cellular Registration Form for delivery to the printer. Once created, it was sent via WAM!NET Direct! JDF. It was then delivered to the Telco Printing, Digital Printing Department on EFIs Balance or Fiery Server.
As you can see, coordinating connectivity and integration with clients and vendors can be a challenge. To make inter-enterprise JDF a reality, youll need to consider whether you want to build it yourself or whether you want to use a service provider like WAM!NETs Media Services Platform which has been built to enable global inter-enterprise print, audio and video workflows for the media production industry.
Service providers, such as WAM!NET, can provide managed JDF enabled connectivity to enable extension of a JDF workflow to your supply chain partners.
Thousands of printers, publishers, ad agencies, corporate marketing departments, music and film companies and broadcasters worldwide are already on the network. Companies like Time Inc., The Economist, RR Donnelley, J. Walter Thompson, Lowes, JC Penney, Universal and Sony to name a few.
The Media Services Platform is a unique combination of infrastructure, services, applications and APIs that enables inter-enterprise workflow that easily adapts to organization and process changes without rebuilding and reinvesting in new technology.
