AW] Overhanging hedges It would be good if owners could keep the front of their properties clear of hedges hanging over what little pavement we have in GG so that people can walk safely. Speeding Residents and visitors of Bourne Park are reminded that the speed limit is 10 mph—please drive responsibly. [We have a general problem of vehi- cles speeding through the hamlet. How can we (legally) discourage it? Join Speed Watch but what else? AW] The Bell: the Latest News First, the good news—the pub will stay open over Christmas and the New Year! After manager Sarah Jayne’s departure on 30 Nov, GG’s own Pierce Mill Lane resident and license owner Doey Colfer has taken over with the assistance of her partner Julian Hill, well known for organising the annual Bell Golf Challenge. No food will be available until the place has been given a thorough tidy-up and the kitchen equipment checked over but Doey hopes to offer hot food again in mid-Jan. Her tenure is not yet per- manent, as she and the freehold own- ers Hawthorn Leisure will want to con- sider how the business is faring—so the best thing is to support the pub now if you want it to remain a part of the community. Doey & Julian extend a warm welcome to everyone. The usual activities will continue: darts nights and Bernie’s Big Quiz, which is back on Mon 7 Dec. And bat & trap will be back in April (more details later). In the meantime, the Christmas tree outside The Bell is looking very bare— Doey has lights but very few decora- tions—please could you show your sup- port by donating one or two? Just tie them on! What a great way of showing that we care about keeping The Bell. Bell FC Lads Stay on Top! The Bell team continue to dominate their division in the West Kent Sunday Football League in fine style. Here’s a summary of the match reports posted on the WKSFL website for November. The Bell team has seen plenty of action and plenty of goals. They still top Divi- sion Four and have only lost one game out of 11 played so far this season (one drawn). They had their best win against The Tornados on 1 Nov, sweeping them aside 7-1. Craig Waller scored a hat-trick; Andrew McKechnie and Ryan Thorpe scored two each. The Bell started well, scoring after five minutes with a header through Craig Waller from a great run and cross from John Kerr. They continued to dominate and scored two more headers through Andrew Mackechnie and Ryan Thorpe, both from good crosses. Craig got his second goal with a fourth header from a corner and Ryan Thorpe made it five just before half time with a great run and lob over the advancing keeper’s head. The Bell made changes at half time and seemed to lose momentum until Andrew Mackechnie got his sec- ond, midway through the second half. Tornados scored a consolation before Craig completed a hat trick to make the final score 7-1. In mid-Nov they managed a narrow 3– 2 win against Hadlow United. The final score makes the game sound more mundane than it actually was. Andrew McKechnie scored twice and Leo Hall made it three in the first half—and it easily could have been double that. Bell were in complete control with Had- low rarely getting out of their own half. But with a change of ends the roles were reversed. Hadlow missed half a dozen one-on-ones, with Frank O'Reilly a clear man of the match in the Bell goal. Hadlow finally had the ball in the net twice in the last quarter of an hour. On 29 Nov The Bell scrapped out a 1-1 draw against Insulators Reserves, their first dropped points after a run of nine consecutive league wins. The Bell's goal was by Glen Nicholls. WI Xmas Tree’s Needles St Mary’s Church invited local clubs and organisations to decorate trees for their Christmas Tree Festi- val. GG WI decided that our dec- orations would be of the knit- ted kind! At the half- complet- ed, unstuffed stage they looked weird; I’ve never seen icicles like it! However, the finished deco- rations were amazing. GG Women’s Institute by Iris Wilson November’s speaker, Gillian Halcrow, gave us an insight into Christmas tradi-
tions, many of which go back to pagan times. Christmas trees first appeared
around 1830 and of course it was
Prince Albert installing a tree in Wind-sor Castle in 1848 which set the trend
for all. The custom of Yule log burning goes back to medieval times, when
they used a whole tree, putting the
larger end into the fire grate while the rest of was left in the room—as it
burned it was shifted forwards! It was always lit from the remains of the pre-
vious year’s tree. Mistletoe is a parasite that grows on apple and willow trees.
Its berries are poisonous to us but not
to birds, which love them. The druids thought the plant had mystical powers,
bringing good luck to households and warding off evil spirits. It’s also used as
a sign of love and friendship, hence the
kissing under it. Originally one picked a berry before a kiss and when all the
berries had gone there was no more kissing. I don’t think that happens now!
Ivy is associated with witches and holly with goblins. Christians also believe
that the prickles on the holly represent
the crown of thorns that Jesus wore when crucified and that the berries are
the drops of His blood. In pagan times, the holly was regarded as the male
plant and the ivy the female; whichever
gender was brought into the house first at Christmas would ‘rule the roost’ for
the following year! The first turkey came from Mexico—then why is it not
called a mexico? Because spices were
added as it travelled through Turkey, hence its name. Who’d believe that
Christmas traditions go back so far?

The Village Pump * OpenReach installed fibreoptic ca-
bles on poles down Victoria Road last month—a step nearer to superfast
broadband we hope. It’s a cheaper solution than burying them under-
ground but they are vulnerable to
damage by storms or accidents.

Oast, Hartlake Rd on 15 Dec at 7pm for a bring-and-share meal. Our book
for discussion is The Taxidermist’s Daughter.
* Daniel Bush’s Quiz Night last
month raised over £300. Thanks to all who came and to those who couldn’t
