President’s Message

Campus In-charge’s Messages

Dr. Pramod Kumar PhD in Organizational Behavior (IIT- Bombay), formerly

with IIMA, Chairperson Placements: XLRI, Ex-Director:

SIBM Pune; Consultant to over 80 companies worldwide.

Author of over 100 research papers, cases and

management games; Research quoted internationally in

textbooks and journals. Served in Government of India

committees on Management Education.

From great careers to great campuses, International School of Business & Media has rapidly grown over the last eight years, both in size and reputation. Primary drivers of this growth have been our competency driven education process, superior performance of alumni in the industry and the demanding standards set by the institute.

We recognize that business education must be similar to training a surgeon, i.e. you should be able to use your learning as you don’t learn only by knowing. Business leadership must involve an action oriented learning approach. However knowledge adds to proficiency of skills and abilities. Business content learning emphasizes learning concepts, theories and their application through case analysis, simulation, group projects and assignments.

This helps students learn about organized approach, problem solving, peer group learning and working in a team. Students also develop skills and attitudes through a variety of high budget and high reputation events such as Marketing Expo, HR Share and Fiesta. They learn all about passionate commitment, drive and self initiative, working as a team against defined standards of performance and target achievement in addition to leadership, emotional and social skills.

They learn from the “break-free” culture of ISB&M- to be friendly, outgoing and to enjoy work and fun with an attitude of taking responsibilities. They learn to align their values and goals in life and to transcend self-limiting thoughts and social stereotypes. ISB&M alumni have deployed by their employers overseas and have done well in their career. Given an opportunity, they will be amongst your best recruits. I cordially invite you to the Kolkata campus of ISB&M and take a part in its recruitment program for

the year 2011-12.

Prof. Surendra Poddar

B.E (Electronics), PGPM MDI, Gurgaon

CFA (CFA Institute USA), FRM (GARP USA)

Eclectic experience of working in corporate (Reckitt

Benckiser, Career Launcher) to being an entrepreneur

and now in Academics. Has conducted executive training

in finance for organizations like Tractors India Limited,

Astra Zeneca, LIC, and ICICI-Prudential Life Insurance.

Also has authored a book on Investments for Insurance.

In a short span of seven years ISB&M Kolkata is ranked amongst the top B-Schools. This is largely because of the unique paradigm of learning which we have adopted at ISB&M as a group and ISB&M Kolkata in particular. We have adopted the top bottom approach of learning, where the skills and knowledge as demanded by corporate are at the top of the pyramid. This approach has helped us to remain focused on the needs of the industry and align our learning processes. We realize that industry centric learning cannot be confined to classroom lectures and hence our learning processes are an eclectic mix of conceptual learning, action oriented learning (student driven events) and continuous interaction with industry. ISB&M culture of friendliness, openness and risk taking, strengthens and reinforces this paradigm of learning. Our conviction in this approach has been supported and validated by industry captains, who have regularly visited our campus for summers and final recruitments and the successful careers of our alumni. We at ISB&M Kolkata look forward to welcoming you to our campus in the IT hub of Kolkata in Sector-

V, Salt Lake City, for 2011-12 final and summer placements, and to be a part of the success story that is

ISB&M Kolkata.

The World of ISB&M, Kolkata

Established in 2004, ISB&M Kolkata has taken rapid strides over the last seven years. Starting with student strength of only 65 in the post-graduate programs, we now boast of over 500 students in the combined courses offered at ISB&M Kolkata. As the second campus in the ISB&M family, we also boast of experience, quality and proven delivering capacity. Despite the worldwide economic recession last year, our students managed to bag important assignments with prestigious organizations. Unique feature: We have summer internship programme for a period of 5 months, which gives ample opportunities to students to work as full time employees of that

particular organization. A few highlights of ISB&M: ISB&M is a group of five institutes located at Kolkata, Gurgaon, Bangalore & Pune (2 campuses), founded by Dr. Pramod Kumar in 2000. ISB&M Kolkata since inception (2004) has provided 100% placements (apart from the 2007-09 batches where 85% of the batch was placed for finals) both for summers and finals. Over 175 companies from various verticals have reposed their trust upon our students.

Strengths of ISB&M, Kolkata:

Firstly, strong corporate relations, which have enabled ISB&M to consistently record 100% placement barring, perhaps, a few blips in the recession marred 2008/09 placement year. Secondly, a strong and vibrant student-driven campus culture, which enables ISB&M students to secure much needed exposure and experience in organizing various events and to work in groups with one’s peers-the sort of experience that are invaluable in honing ones soft skills, and in preparing oneself for working in the corporate world. Thirdly, ISB&M, Kolkata has a strong faculty team which is among the strongest among all B-schools in Eastern India. It is perhaps this strength that translates into high academic standards, that explains why ISB&M Kolkata continues to be the preferred B-school for campus recruitments in Kolkata for many highly reputed non-Kolkata based corporate houses. Finally, strong infrastructural facilities, in terms of a fully Wi-Fi enabled campus, a well-equipped IT lab, and a library that is well-stocked with books, journals and magazines on diverse subjects

Why ISB&M Kolkata? ISB&M Kolkata is not just another B-School. It is an all purpose finishing school. Managers need much more than academic knowledge to be successful in today’s corporate world. At ISB&M they start their journey towards corporate excellence as soon as they clear the rigorous selection procedures set forward to select only the most deserving of candidates. ISB&M has its own culture: a culture that transforms all who have been associated with this institute.

As a matter of fact, ISB&M Kolkata has been ranked 28th among best B-Schools in India in terms of Placements.

-Source: Business World B-School Survey, June 2010

Some of the reasons why ISB&M is held in high esteem amongst our recruiters are: i. ISB&M Kolkata is completely student driven. The student committees are not merely

nominal or academic; they have an active say in most matters of the college. So while the Placement Cell handles Placements, the Branding Cell handles all activities towards managing the ISB&M brand. And it’s not all work either: the Culture and Lifestyle Development Cell is actively responsible for organizing a number of high profile fests and events throughout the year. What this translates into is a strong sense of responsibility from Day One at college for the students. They learn to manage their own affairs, and more pertinently, the affairs of their peers!

ii. Faculty wise ISB&M Kolkata ranks amongst the top B-Schools of Eastern India. With a

Core faculty strength of 24 and visiting faculty sourced from premier institutions like IIMs, IITs, XLRI and MDI, ISB&M Kolkata has the necessary framework required to build a solid conceptual base in its students.

iii. ISB&M Kolkata may be situated in the eastern part of the country, but our students are sourced from all over India. During their stay at ISB&M, the transformation that they undergo makes them ready for any and every challenges forthcoming. A pool of over 200 candidates from diverse backgrounds and disciplines willing to accept jobs pan-India: it is no wonder that ISB&M Kolkata is gradually emerging as a favored destination for recruiters!

Page 11: ISB&M,Kolkata_2011-12

Student Committees on Campus Management cannot be taught in classrooms. And unless there is hands-on

experience to supplement theoretical learning, concepts never fully sink in. To this

end, ISB&M Kolkata looks to empower students by letting them manage their affairs

as much as practicable. The student committees, popularly referred to as “Cells” are

directly responsible for the development and well-being of ISB&M students.

President and Vice-President of the Student Council Ensuring proper co-ordination among the functioning of various cells and acting as an interface between the students and the management

Page 12: ISB&M,Kolkata_2011-12

12

Student Driven Campus……………!!

Placement Assistance Cell Their responsibility is to ensure quality placements for the batch. People are skeptical with

the idea of greenhorns handling such an important aspect of management education, but a

record of 100% Placements with leading organizations and excellent compensation

packages, has helped answer the non-believers! The Placement Cell is directly responsible

for negotiating compensation and profiles offered to ISB&M students, and the scheduling

of companies based on student preferences.

Corporate Relationship Cell The sister cell of the Placement Cell, the CR Cell conceptualizes and organizes guest lectures and live projects in conjunction with leading organizations. They function as the interface between the corporate world and ISB&M students and help in introducing the two to each other.

Admissions & Branding Cell The Admissions & Branding Cell manages the ISB&M brand and handles all the necessary admissions support functions. They are directly in charge of all branding activities undertaken by ISB&M Kolkata in a calendar year and have hands-on experience in brand management and marketing communications.

Professional Development Cell Arranging various personality enhancing sessions and knowledge workshops to help students face the challenges ahead in their career

Alumni Cell Maintaining the alumni network and associated events like convocation and alumni meets along the year.

Cultural & Lifestyle Cell Conceptualizing and organizing various cultural events and fests, organize games and activities along with the academic structure.

E-Cell (Entrepreneurship Cell) To encourage and incubate new ideas from young minds and to help them to achieve their

ideas into action.

Summer Internship:

Internship is an integral part of the PGPBM programs of ISB&M as it aims to give the student an

opportunity to relate their classroom learning with the practicalities of the corporate world. At the

end of the first year, all students have to complete a project in an organization within 20 weeks

under the supervision of a guide/ mentor. At the end of the internship a detailed report is

submitted in duplicate to the Institute and the said organization.

The evaluation of the report is done by the company and the Institute and constitutes an integral

part in completing the course.

Dissertation: The program also requires a student to submit and defend a dissertation on a topic chosen in conjunction

with his/ her faculty mentor to fulfill all criterion of the program. It is designed to simulate the student to

make an intensive study of some aspects of management and sharpen their conceptual and analytic

abilities.
