as student learning. This programme is advocating

critical thinking among students. Students from other visiting schools must go back

with new ideas to implement in their schools.

Invention fair is conducted on the day of National Science day. Students

learn science, teamwork, communication and

scientific learning. With this type of intervention

not only students but also teachers learn the importance of science.

Introduction

Invention Fair is annual display of solutions developed by students of Grades VI-IX through “Invention and Sustainability Education programme” implemented in 29 Government schools across rural and tribal areas of Karnataka and Odisha.

The Invention fair 2017 was a way to exhibit the students’ application of their learning into creating solutions for problems they face in their daily lives. The students worked on problems ranging from storage of agricultural produce, problem of birds in crops, purification of water to disposal of household waste thus creating innovations for the fields of agriculture, water, sanitation, health,

people to become like Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam.

It is quite inspiring to see the children, the amount

of enthusiasm they are presenting with. All this has been possible only with the support and

implementation of SELCO Foundation.

Learn to raise fundamental questions: what, why,

how, when; this will foster curiosity and push one to further develop their

innovation and push critical thinking.

electricity and magnetism. Students used locally available materials and recycled items to make these innovations. The conversations with the students on the processes and their rationale for the innovations reflected their sensitivity towards their surrounding environment, empathy for the existing problems in the community and their effort towards making sustainability as a way of life. In the coming days, the students will work on refining their prototypes, test them in the surrounding communities and provide them to the community members. Students and faculty from neighboring schools also visited the Invention Fair 2017 and were inspired by the different innovations and approaches. They expressed interest to replicate this programme in their schools as well.

About the Session

Dr. Shrikant Pohankar, founder of Pohankar Foundation, Pune has been educating farmers in various parts of the country about sustainable innovations for agriculture and livelihood issues. He works with farmers on understanding their problems, creating solutions, testing them to improve effectiveness and building their capacity to implement and take forward the solutions. He has written several books to spread this knowledge and experiences. At the Invention Fair 2017, a farmer’s workshop on the theme of “self-dependent farmers” was conducted to discuss the issues of the farmers specific to the geography and context along with various innovations in agriculture.

The 20 farmers who participated in this workshop cultivate arecanut, coconut, rubber and pepper as major crops in Ujire and surrounding villages. Dr. Pohankar spoke about various uses of sea salt along with the application procedures for its usage as a fertilizer, micronutrient, insecticide, weedicide and fungicide substituting the chemical counterparts. This not only helps in achieving results in a short duration but also Dr. Pohankar also discussed about cost effective, easily transferable and environmentally friendly innovations surrounding irrigation, farming preventing animals from destroying crops etc.

The workshop concluded with an interaction of specific queries between Dr. Pohankar and the farmers. The farmers conveyed their enthusiasm to implement the newly acquired farming techniques from this workshop in their agricultural practices. They thanked Dr. Pohankar for sharing his knowledge with them. Dr. Pohankar expressed his desire to hear about the feedback from the farmers on their experiments and offered his ongoing support to guide them.
