Function Description of SNCTP

Subnetwork connection tunnel protection (SNCTP) function is an optimized scheme to improve the efficiency of lower-order SNCP switching. Transfer of lower-order SNCP to higher-order SNCP (that is, SNCTP): VC-12/VC-3 SNCP services in the same VC-4 are consolidated into VC-4 SNCP services. Then the higher-order SNCP switching mode is used to avoid excessive switching time due to the switching of large amount of lower-order SNCP services. Thus, services can be restored rapidly.

Page 35: Introduction to Features of OptiX NG-SDH V100R007-20080718-A

HUAWEI TECHNOLOGIES CO. , LTD. Page 35Huawei Confidential

Application Scenario of SNCTP

The NE1 and NE2 converge large amount of VC-12 and VC-3 services. Lower-order SNCP services

are detected and switched in the lower-order cross-connect chips of cross-connect boards. When the

amount of lower-order SNCP services is rather large, the states of large amount of lower-order SNCP

services change if a fiber cut occurs to the working/protection path. In this case, multiple adjustments

of lower-order cross-connections are triggered, which results in the excessive SNCP switching time.

The SNCTP consolidates VC-12/VC-3 SNCP services in the same VC-4 to VC-4 SNCP services. If

the VC-4 path is faulty, the VC-4 SNCP switching protects lower-order SNCP services. The VC-4

SNCP switching mode can avoid excessive switching time due to the switching of large amount of

lower-order SNCP services. Thus, services can be restored rapidly.

Hot Patch Supported by SCCs and Boards

Basic Definitions of Patches Patch: an independent software unit released for modifying the bug in software. Hot Patch: a section of codes to eliminate the software bug without interrupting

services. Patch Pack: includes one or more patches and is registered in the NE software.

Advantages of Patches Solving a majority of software bugs in service without affecting services Reducing the number of version releases and upgrades, reducing the cost and

avoiding the risk Facilitating problem location

Limitations Patches are not almighty and cannot solve all software bugs. Functions cannot be added by patches.

NG-SDH V1R6 products support the hot patch function of the NE software. NG-SDH V1R7 products support the hot patch function of NE software and board software.

Power Consumption ControlThe functions of new boards of NG-SDH product series are stronger and the density of

service ports is higher. As a result, the board power consumption is larger. In case that

many large power consumption boards are configured for an NE, the power consumption

may exceed the tolerance of the power board if the power consumption is not controlled.

Thus, the whole NE may fail.

Currently, only two boards support the power consumption control function, that is, SSN1EMS4 and SSN1EGS4.

State Description of Power Consumption Control

Large power consumption boards have two working states.

High power consumption state: the normal working state. All the chips of the

board can work normally.

Low power consumption state: All the service chips of the board are not

initialized. The board can only apply to the NE software for entering the high

power consumption state.

When a board goes into the low power consumption state from the

high power consumption state, the board will perform automatic hard

reset.

Compared with other boards, large power consumption boards must

request for entering the high power consumption state after reset

before the boards work. Boards without the power consumption

control function are in the high power consumption state after reset.

J Byte in Each NG-SDH Version In the V1R1 version, the default value of J bytes is:

J0/JI/J2: 16-byte mode. The value of transmitted J bytes and received J bytes is Huawei SBS.

The value is consistent with that of other product series of the Optical Network Product Line.

In the V1R2 version, the default value of J bytes is modified as follows. The modified value is also used by V1R3 to V1R6 versions.

J0: single-byte mode. The value of transmitted J bytes and received J bytes is 1.

If the product interconnects to NG-SDH V1R1 products or other products of the Optical Network Product Line, the interconnected ends will report J0_MM and HP_TIM alarms.

In the V1R7 version, the default value of J bytes is set as follows. When the received J byte is 0, the detection function is disabled.

Received J0/J1/J2: single-byte mode. The value is 0. Transmitted J0/J1/J2: single-byte mode. The value is Huawei SBS. When the received J byte is 0, the detection function is disabled.

When NG-SDH V1R7 products interconnect to NG-SDH V1R1 products or other products of the Optical Network Product Line, the interconnected equipment will not generate any alarm.

When NG-SDH V1R7 products interconnects to NG-SDH V1R2-R6 products, the NG-SDH V1R2-R6 will generate J0_MM and HP_TIM alarms.

The NG-SDH V1R7 will not generate any alarm because the detection function by J bytes is disabled.

Loading NE Software Package

Definition of Software Packages Software package is a virtual definition. All the software is not

compressed into a package. All required software by an NE (currently,

only the INI file, FPGA, extended BIOS of board software and NE

software are included. The basic BIOS is not included) is centralized

to a logic software package and called as software package (*.pkg

file).

After the software package is loaded to the NE, the integrated

software package is stored in the CF card of the SCC, that is, under

the sfs1/pkg and sfs2/pkg directories of corresponding SCC file

system.

Page 44: Introduction to Features of OptiX NG-SDH V100R007-20080718-A

HUAWEI TECHNOLOGIES CO. , LTD. Page 44Huawei Confidential

Features of Package Loading In package loading, you need not care about the details on board software loading

but care about the NE. You only need to perform some simple operations on the

Toolkit.

The NE is automatically managed. If the version of the newly-inserted board is not

consistent with that of NE software package, the software will be updated

automatically. If the board file is lost, it will be automatically restored from the SCC.

Incremental loading. Only required files are loaded. The rules are as follows.

1) The inconsistent version is replaced.

2) The required version is added.

3) The software of the old package that does not exist in the new package is deleted.

NE Software Package Loading Function - Requirements for Software and Hardware

Hardware Requirements

The flash space of NG-SDH products is small, which cannot store the

whole software package. Thus, an external CF card is required.

Currently, only the SSN3GSCC is equipped with the CF card, which can

support the function.

Software Requirements

The package loading function is distributed. The SCC boards and other

boards must be matched and support the package loading function.

NG-SDH V1R7 products start to support the package loading function.

Precautions on Package Loading

Package loading can be performed only when the main state and substate of an NE for which a

package is to be loaded are normal.

Before package loading, confirm that the Health Tool is OK. Try to clear the alarms on the NE. For

persisting alarms, collect the alarms and send them to R&D personnel for processing. For details

about the Health Tool, refer to the attachment.

Before package loading, confirm that the version and database of the active and standby boards are

consistent.

Before upgrade, confirm that all protection schemes on the NE are not forced to switch or locked.

Before upgrade by package loading, confirm that the boards to be cold reset are protected (different

measures should be taken in different situations). Otherwise, services will be interrupted.

During package loading, no board is allowed to go online or go offline.

During package loading, no configuration modification is allowed.

After the NE is activated, observe for a period of time. Make sure that the NE and the entire network

are normal, and then issue the submit command.

Application of PRBS Tests

The figure below shows a typical service signal flow. Start the PRBS tests of

different boards in the directions to be tested and perform the loopback operation

in corresponding locations. Check whether bit errors are detected to determine

which section of the test path is faulty.

Application Scenario of Board Replacement

Because the chips of a new board are different from those of an old board and the specifications

of the new board and those of the old board are different (but the difference is rather small), the

software needs to consider the new board and the old board as different boards. Therefore, a new

board ID is required for the new board.

Generally, an old board is used on the old NE that does not support the board ID of a new board.

When a new board is used to replace the old board, the new board must be able to work with the

ID of the old board. And the new board must be able to work with the ID of the new board on a

new NE. That is, the new board should have multiple board IDs. The function that a board

supports multiple IDs is called as board replacement.

The board replacement function can be used for spare part preparation and capacity expansion.

Features of Board ReplacementNew boards can be used on an old NE. New boards can have the functions of old boards. New boards can be used on a new NE. They can use new IDs and have new functions.
