Culminating Activity

Students had to gather all information they learned to create a character living through this time in history. Students had to choose to be a Native American or pioneer and write about their experiences. The characters had to have authentic names and be drawn wearing typical dress.

I am a 16 year old pioneer girl traveling west. My name is Mary Baker. My favorite toys are limber jacks and wooden dolls. I like to play house and hopscotch. I am traveling on the Oregon Trail with my mother, sister and brother. I am scared because I have never been here before. I had to leave my friends and family. There are animals here that I never saw before. I think they are going to eat me. At night it is very dark. We sleep outside.

I'm a Native American. My name is Askook Kajika. It means snake, walks without a sound. I am 35 years old. I have 3 kids and a wife. My friends and I hunt big buffalos. We build our houses with animal skin. My kids play Hide and Seek. They play house and Fox and Geese too. We do not like the pioneers because they killed ten Native Americans from my tribe.

My name is Ana White. I am 16 years old. I am traveling west to Oregon. We are going west by wagon. The oxen pull the wagons. The wagons have bonnets over them. We have horses too. We have been traveling a long time. One day a bunch of buffalo were passing. We had to wait hours for them to pass. Sometimes there are storms. It rains big pieces of ice. The Natives help us get food sometimes. When we don't see sticks for fire, we use buffalo dung for the fire. We will tell the Natives to get off this land so we can live here.

Hi, my name is Namid Ogin, it means star dancer rose. I'm a Native American. I am 10 years old. My clothing is made of animal skin to keep me warm. I live in a house made from sticks. My friends and I play with corn husk dolls. I run around and play alot with my friends. My mom and dad help other people build houses. At night we sleep in our houses on hay.

I am a pioneer. My name is Bill Henry. I am moving West to have a better life. There are no jobs or food in the East. I am 20 years old. I am traveling with my mom, dad, sister and girlfriend. We love each other. I used to go to school but, I had to stop school to go to work. I don't like traveling this far. I caught fish to eat. It tasted nasty but, it's all we have now. My feet are hurting because I've been walking all day. I get scared at night because I hear strange animals. The ladies are fine because they get to sleep in the wagon. The men have to take out all the stuff that was in the wagon. In the morning we have to put the stuff back in the wagon. I feel like quitting!

My name is Tablita. It means tiara. I'm sad because my grandma died in a battle. We were living here before the pioneers came. I live in a straw house. I live with my mom, dad, sister, and brother. We play with cloth dolls. I help the pioneers get food.

I am a pioneer. My name is Ellen Belle. I am 6 yrs old. My favorite games are house and Hide and Seek. My favorite toy is Mountain Bolos. I am traveling to Oregon with my mom. I not happy because I never been there before. We eat meat and pork. I help get wood so we can make fire and cook.

My name is Dyami Ahiga. Dyami means eagle. Ahiga means he fights. I am a Native American. I am 46 years old. My wife and I have 5 children, 2 girls and 3 boys. They are 9,11,13,14 and 15. We make our clothing out of mountain sheep skin. My family and I were attacked two times by the Americans. We were fighting because they came to my place and tried to take over my land. My little son was killed. I was sliced on my eye. My wife and I teach our children to fight so this doesn't happen again.

My name is Oscar Williams. I am 28 years old. I am moving west with my wife and kids. We are bringing tools, bacon, pots, pans and some of our furniture. We are moving from Tennessee to California. We are traveling by wagon. We stop to cook dinner. We hunt animals to eat. My kids like to play house, tag and Hide and Seek. We are all so happy to move. The kids will meet new friends and we will meet new grown ups.

I am a Native American girl. My name is Aponi Mahal. My name means butterfly woman. I'm 7 years old. I have 2 sisters and 1 brother. We wear clothes made from animal skin.We play Hide and Seek. We play with toy guns and rag dolls. Sometimes I get scared when my big brother fights with the pioneers. I think he will get hurt.

My name is John Cannon. I am a pioneer. I am 13 years old. I am moving west to Oklahoma to have a better life. I feel happy. I am moving with my parents, brothers, and sisters. We have a covered wagon to keep the food and supplies in. I have a toy gun. It is a stick. I play with it when we stop to rest. We like to play Fox and Geese too. I have to sleep on the ground. Sometimes I am scared because I see a lot of animals.

My dress is made from animal skins. I play with rag dolls. My family used to help the pioneers. My mom used to make food for them. My dad drew a for the pioneers so they could go to the west. They did not know the best way to go.

We live with our mom and dad. I play house and hide and seek. I feel scared because some other people are moving west and I don't know them. They look weird.

My name is Honora Bell. I am a pioneer. I have 5 children, 4 girls and 1 boy. We are moving West by wagon because we are poor and there was very little food for us to eat in the East. I think the land will be better in the West. We packed water, bacon, coffee, pots, pans and even our furniture. I am so tired. My feet hurt. Everyone almost died when we crossed the mountains because we were sick. My children almost died but the Native Americans helped us.
