INTERFACING THE HYDROBOX FOR A SURVEY APPLICATION *Updated September 30, 2013* 1 of 4 The HydroBox sensor unit and the HydroBox Host application software provide a critical part of your Hydrographic Survey solution, but there are several other important hardware and/or software components that you will need to perform a successful survey. The following components are also required to have a successful survey mission: Laptop or Desktop PC (Sunlight readable preferred in most applications) DGPS for accurate survey position information. Multiple COM Ports, or USB to Serial Adapter (for GPS, Data Logger, and Survey Software Interface) Hydrographic Survey Software Application This application note will cover the basic setup of all the equipment listed above in a step by step manner. There are 2 typical installation setups for the HydroBox: DGPS Only, and DGPS with Survey Software. Each of these installations shall be described. HydroBox to PC Interface The HydroBox sensor unit sends and receives data via a dedicated, single serial connection to/from the Laptop (Desktop) computer hereinafter referred to as a PC. Note that the acoustic data sent to the PC is sent in real time and in shallow water the amount of data is significant. Thus, it is best to purchase or use a PC that has a 9 pin Serial Interface (COM port) connector. A direct RS232 serial port connection between the PC and the HydroBox Sensor unit is the best way to ensure that no acoustic data is lost during your survey. If you cannot use a PC with a dedicated serial port, one of the adapters listed below may be used but it is best to have a direct connection for the acoustic data link if possible. Also note that the Hydrobox data cable incorporates a port-powered RS-232 to RS-422 converter. Because power to the converter needs to originate from the PC, some USB to serial converters do not work for this application. This is common for low end converters that are typically used for consumer electronic peripherals. This is another reason to make use of a direct COM port connection between the HydroBox and the Host PC. HydroBox with DGPS Interface Only Configuration All survey applications require that the depth information provided by the HydroBox be mated to a specific position on the map. Thus, a DGPS is a critical part of the survey solution. Fortunately, the position information from the DGPS is sent in several industry standard ASCII data strings (RMC, GGA, GLL) with minimal data bandwidth requirements. Since most PC’s of today do NOT have multiple COM ports available, the DGPS interface to the computer should make use of one of the Serial to USB converter. The DGPS interface uses about 1/10 th of the data bandwidth when compared to the HydroBox acoustic data interface so a Serial to USB adapter will work fine for the DGPS data. For applications that require the HydroBox and a DGPS only, a total of 2 COM ports are needed to setup a survey system. For functional Serial to USB 2.0 adapters known to work for this type of setup, refer to the adapters listed in Table 1.

The HydroBox sensor unit and the HydroBox Host application software provide a critical part of your Hydrographic Survey solution, but there are several other important hardware and/or software components that you will need to perform a successful survey. The following components are also required to have a successful survey mission:

• Laptop or Desktop PC (Sunlight readable preferred in most applications) • DGPS for accurate survey position information. • Multiple COM Ports, or USB to Serial Adapter (for GPS, Data Logger, and Survey Software

Interface) • Hydrographic Survey Software Application

This application note will cover the basic setup of all the equipment listed above in a step by step manner.

The DGPS interface uses about 1/10th of the data bandwidth when compared to the HydroBox acoustic data interface so a Serial to USB adapter will work fine for the DGPS data. For applications that require the HydroBox and a DGPS only, a total of 2 COM ports are needed to setup a survey system. For functional Serial to USB 2.0 adapters known to work for this type of setup, refer to the adapters listed in Table 1.

HydroBox with DGPS and Survey Software Configuration For the majority of applications the HydroBox shall be used with a DGPS and a Survey Software package (such as HyPack or HydroPro). Having a full survey application running allows the user to setup the area to survey, draw the survey lines and navigate the lines with a visual tool. When a survey program is running, 4 serial interfaces are needed to make full use of the survey system setup in most applications

• HydroBox Acoustic Data Port • HydroBox DGPS Position Input • Survey Software DGPS Position Input • Survey Software External Annotation/HydroBox Data Logger

Again the user should note that all of the interfaces listed above are LOW BANDWIDTH except for the HydroBox Acoustic Data Port. If a direct COM port interface to the PC is available, the HydroBox Acoustic Data Port should go directly to the PC. 4 Port Serial to USB adapters for the full survey software setup are listed in Table 1. Legacy Serial Adapters Information SyQwest recommends that all HydroBox users interface their survey systems using the Serial to USB 2.0 adapters listed in the sections above. In some instances customers have legacy PC products. In these cases, the best recommendation is to buy a new Laptop or Desktop PC. If that cannot be done, the information below may be helpful. Customers have used the HydroBox with the interface adapter types listed below with success but support for them is very limited and will be difficult to sustain in the future, see Table 2.

• PCMCIA to Serial: A recently obsolete expansion interface. This is a very good option, but finding adapter cards is becoming more difficult. Most brands of these types of cards work well with HydroBox.

• ExpressCard to Serial: Currently the most common type of expansion interface, it has replaced the

PCMCIA slot. This is a very good interface and most brands that we have tried work well with Hydrobox. We recommend the 4-port Quatech QSPXP-100 as a top performer.

bandwidth that allows higher data rates

on the serial ports for more efficiency.

The new High Speed USB Serial

Adapter line gives your laptop or

workstation the ability to communicate

between a USB port and up to eight RS-

232, RS-422, or RS-485 serial

peripherals. It adds the COM port(s) via

its USB connection and is compatible

with new and legacy RS-232 or RS-

232/422/485 devices. The USB Serial

Adapters are the ideal solution for a

variety of industries and applications

including banking, retail and industrial

automation where PCs have a

significantly shorter lifecycle than the

peripherals that use them.

For over 20 years, Quatech has been

known to help you Connect withReliability. As we continue in the race to

become the industry leader, our high

performance device connectivity line

expands with the new high speed USB

2.0 Serial Adapters. The next generation

UPort® 1600-8 Series8-port RS-232 and RS-232/422/485 USB-to-serial converters

The UPort® 1600-8 USB-to-serial converters allow you to connect 8 RS-232 or RS-232/422/485 devices to your laptop or workstation through the USB (Universal Serial Bus) port. The UPort® 1600-8

converters are compatible with new and legacy serial devices, and are perfect for instrumentation and manufacturing applications.

Medical scientists and pharmaceutical researchers rely on sophisticated laboratory equipment to discover new treatments for patients. Most research is carried out in teams given the complex and collaborative nature of medical science. Scientists often transfer images and data from microscopes and other equipment to each other’s laptops or desktop computers. Connecting all of these pieces of equipment usually requires multiple serial ports, one for each peripheral device. Since computers are only equipped with a limited number of serial ports, expanding a USB connection into multiple serial ports can provide researchers with the connectivity they need to make their next scientific breakthrough. Moxa’s solution is the UPort®

1610-8, which is an RS-232 USB-to-serial converter that can be used to connect multiple serial interface microscopes and other equipment to a computer’s USB port. The UPort® 1610-8 provides the following benefits:

Performance Line Technology ExpressCard technology is emerging withfaster speeds and better efficiency than thetypical PCMCIA and PC Cards, connectinghigh-bandwidth peripherals to notebooksand other portables. The ExpressCard’scredit-card like format gives way to asmaller, faster and more desktop-friendlyformat.

Gone are the days of laptops manufacturedwith PC Card slots and are swapped outwith smaller, slimmer and thinnerExpressCard portals. Quatech’s SerialExpressCard line supersedes oldertechnology and are engineered for newlaptop models.

Quatech’s ExpressCards are designed inthe smallest form factor -34. ExpressCard34 is compatible with all ExpressCard slots- 34/54.

Quatech’s ExpressCard solutionsaccommodate I/O expansion andconnectivity to serial and parallel devices inmobile laptop applications.

Available in one, two and four port serialconfigurations and one parallel portconfiguration, the ExpressCards offer easy-to-upgrade PC Card technologies, whileintegrating popular external peripheralfunctionality via ExpressCard module form-factor.

The PXP series was designed with a PCIExpress (PCIe) interface rather than usingUSB controller interfaces.

Advantages of a PCIe-based ExpressCarddesign are in the interface to the laptop’smotherboard. The PCIe bus interface is thesuccessor to the PCI bus, which in turn wasthe successor to the ISA bus to which built-in ports were originally attached. As such, the ExpressCard adapter design utilizes aPCIe-based design and can still directly useI/O space addresses and interrupts, thusmore closely emulating built-in ports thancan be done via USB-based design. Moreover, because there's no USB stackfor the drivers to contend with, throughputcan be higher and latency will be lower(considerably so in many cases).

Due to improved data transfer rate, theExpressCard is considerably more efficientfor multi-tasking operations. The PXPseries support data rates of up to921.6Kbps, which provides steady flow ofdata throughput.

Quatech’s PXP series is a great solution toconnect with existing peripherals andmaintain compatibility and functionality withtheir current application software.

Quatech 34mm Expresscards can be usedin either 34 or 54mm Expresscard slots. Asan added feature, Quatech includes theirModel ADP-XP54 Expresscard 54mmadapter for 34mm cards with everyshipment to improve fit and durability of the34mm cards in the larger 54mm slots.

Quatech also sells and supports otherExpressCard connectivity products, including hard drive eSATA 2.0 andEthernet configurations.
