A Message from the President WhatmakesINSTEBibleCollegeunique?Firstofall,itisbothportableandaffordable.Nomatterthesizeofthechurch,INSTEisa it.Allthatisneededtogetstartedisamature,dedicatedleadercalledtomakedisciples,whomINSTEtrainsthroughashortdistanceleader‐trainingprogramrightwhereheorsheis.INSTEsuppliesthematerials—booksandtestsincluded—asupportsystemforthegroupleader,plusrecordsandrecognitionforthecoursesstudied.
INSTEisaffordable.Apersoncanstudyall iveyearsinINSTEforlessthanitwouldcostforonesemesteratatraditionalBibleCollege.Furthermore,INSTEcomestothelocalchurch,soBiblecollegetrainingisavailabletoall.
Secondly,INSTE’smethodologysetsitapart.MostformaleducationalsystemstodayarebasedontheGreekdidacticmodelrevolvingaroundalecture.INSTE’smodelisbasedonrelationships,aHebrewmodelthatincorporateslearningintotheliferhythmofthechurchandthelearner.
Thirdly,INSTEisnotjustchurch‐housed,itischurch‐based.Ourmissionstatementmakesthatclear:
INSTEexiststohelpthelocalchurchmakedisciplesanddevelopleaders
fortheful illmentoftheGreatCommission.
INSTEisamissionfacilitator.Everychurchhasauniquecallingtoful ill.INSTEstimulatesthegrowthofthe“stemcells”inthatchurchthatbecomethematuredisciplesandBible‐centeredleadersthathelpthelocalchurchful illitsuniquemission.ThusnotwoINSTEgroupsarealike,becausethegiftingandcallingoftheindividualsinthosegroupsareatthedirectionoftheHolySpirit.
ItisimportanttonotealsothatINSTEdoesnotprepareleadersforthechurch;itpreparestheleadersofthechurch.Theprepositionisimportant.Godmakesleadersbygiftingthem.Theleadersarealreadythere;INSTEequipsthecalled.
Wehavegreatplansforthefuturesuchasaddingdigitalcapabilities,suchase‐books,cyber‐groupsandon‐linestudentservices.Butmostofall,welookforwardto"missioning"withyou.Thefutureisbright.

Asanaccredited,degree‐grantingmemberoftheDistanceEducationandTrainingCouncil(DETC),INSTEBibleCollegeisaninstitutionalmemberoftheCouncilforHigherEducationAccreditation(CHEA),anon‐pro itorganizationservingasthenationaladvocateforself‐regulationthroughaccreditation,andtheAmericanCouncilonEducation(ACE),thenation’sumbrellaassociationforhighereducation.

INSTEisaccreditedbytheAccreditingCommissionoftheDistanceEducationandTrainingCouncil,DETC,Washington,D.C.WechoseDETCbecauseofitsreputationastheleadingaccreditingagencyfordistanceeducationintheUnitedStatesandabroad.DETCisarecognizedmemberofCHEA(CouncilonHigherEducationAccreditation).ItislistedbytheU.S.DepartmentofEducationasanationallyrecognizedaccreditingagency.Itsstandards,bothacademicallyandethically,areveryhigh.
AccreditationmeansthatINSTEhasmetthestandardsestablishedbyDETCforcollege‐leveleducationalinstitutions.ItalsomeansthattheacademiccommunityrecognizesthehighqualityofeducationprovidedbyINSTEtoitsstudents.Accreditationmeansallourprogramsandpoliciesembodystandardsofgoodpractice.
MinisterialCredentials
INSTEdoesnotgrantministerialcredentials.However,graduationfromINSTEful illstheacademicrequirementsforministerialcredentialswithOpenBibleChurches.Applicantsareencouragedtocheckwiththeirdenominationalof icialsforotherrequirements.PersonsfromotherdenominationsshouldinquireoftheirchurchleadershipabouttheapplicabilityofINSTEtoful illrequirementsforcredentials.
Multi‐DenominationalFocus
Fromtheverybeginning,ourCollegehashadaKingdomfocus.Wearemulti‐lingual,multi‐denominational,andmulti‐nationalinscope.AmongthechurchgroupsthathaveusedINSTEastheirdiscipleshipandleadershiptraininginstitutionarethefollowing:AssembliesofGod,ChurchofGod(Cleveland),ChurchofGod(Anderson),InternationalFoursquareGospel,LibertyChurches,Vineyard,andmanyindependentchurches.ManymorechurchdenominationsareinvolvedinINSTEinnationsaroundtheworld.
AShortHistory
In1980theAcademicDeanofOpenBibleCollegeinDesMoines,Iowa,walkedacrossthecampustotheof iceoftheDirectorofInternationalMinistriesofOpenBibleChurches.ShesharedwiththeRev.PaulCan ieldanideaaboutatheologicaleducationbyextensionprogramforSpain.Rev.Can ieldsensedthatGodwasindeedinthisplan.
Dr.LeonaJanzen(laterVenditti)arrivedinSpainin1981withamission.Firstthough,she’dhavetolearnSpanish.Oneintensiveyearlater,INSTE(theInstituteofTheologybyExtension)wasborn.Thosewerehecticdays,stayingjustonelessonaheadofthestudents.AsINSTEgrew,GodbroughtmanydedicatedpeopletoworkalongsidetheDirector,anarmyofwonderfulSpanishbrothersandsisters,VinceandLoisMcCarty…andNick.

Somedaywe’llhavetotellyouthewholestory.Suf iceittosaythatNickVenditti,originallyfromNewYorkCity,acceptedtheLordinSpain.HeheardaboutINSTEinachurchinMadrid,sonaturally—ashetellsit—heenrolled.Soonhebeganministeringinvariouschurches,preaching,teaching,andevangelizinginMadrid,ValladolidandotherpartsofSpain.Afteragoodlongperiodof“fellowshipping,”NickwonLeona’sheartandhandinmarriage,andtheydedicatedthemselvestothetasktowhichGodhadcalledthem.
TheyreturnedtotheUnitedStatesin1990toredesignINSTEformulti‐nationalimplementation.TheprocessledthemtoPasadena,California,whereNickworkedonadoctorateintheSchoolofInterculturalStudiesatFullerTheologicalSeminary.Meanwhile,Leonaandhebeganthearduoustaskofrewritingthecurriculum.
In1991anotherchallengecame.INSTEhadbeenborninSpanish,andevenintherevisionprocess,thematerialswerebeingproducedinthatlanguage.CoulditbetranslatedtoEnglishsoitcouldbeusedthroughouttheUnitedStatesbothinEnglishandSpanish?HappilytheLordbroughtalongpersonsofkindredspiritsuchasLoisMcCartytotranslatethebooksfromSpanishtoEnglish.
Thatsameyear,Rev.JuanCruzcametoPasadenatobetrainedasdirectorofINSTEHonduras.UnderthedirectionofRev.Cruz,nowDirectorofINSTEforLatinAmerica,INSTEextendedtootherLatinAmericancountriessuchasGuatemala,ElSalvador,CostaRica,andNicaragua.Infact,halfthestudentsofINSTEthroughouttheworldliveinCentralAmerica.
TheINSTEof icemovedtoDesMoines,Iowa,in1996andcontinuestogrow,notonlyintheUnitedStates,butaroundtheworld.NickandLeonaVendittihavebeencalled“hard‐coremissionaries”—anaptdescription,forGodhasplacedtheworldintheirhearts.
ExtensionaroundtheWorldButthat’snottheendofthestory.ThroughaseriesofGod‐plannedencounters,theLordmovedINSTEintotheFrench‐speakingworldthroughtheeffortsofa
Frenchpastorandhiswife,GerardandAngeleMoya,andadedicatedteamoftranslatorsandco‐workers.
AtthesametimethattheFrenchprojectwasbeinglaunched,theVendittismetadynamicyoungHungarianpastornamedMichaelGuylas.AsheleftDesMoines,PastorGuylas’partingwordswerethese:“Inoneyear,INSTEwillbeinHungarian!”NickandLeonawerenotalittleskeptical,fortheyknowhowhardataskitistotranslatefromonelanguagetoanother.ButGodandMichaelareaformidableteam.Sureenough,in1996theyhadintheirhandsthe irstINSTEbookinthatlanguage.Aboutthissametime,theLordbeganburdeningtheheartsoftheINSTEteamaboutaRussiantranslation.TheyprayedandGodprovidedateamofgiftedtranslators.INSTEinRussianisnowbeingusedtodisciplebelieversinUkraineandotherpartsoftheworld.

Lessontests.Thestudentwhofailsthelessonexamsinaspeci iccoursemustretakethatcourseandsubmitthenewgradestotheINSTEof ice.
Finalexams.Attheendofthecourse,thegroupleaderproctorsthe inalexamination.Thegroupleaderhastheoptionofreviewingtheexaminationwiththegroupimmediatelyafterward,providedno
answersarechanged.Thisoptiongivesimmediatefeedbacktothestudentsonquestionstheymissed,thusprovidingalearningopportunity.Theleadersendsthe inalexaminationstotheINSTEof iceforcorrection.Topassacoursethestudentmustreceiveapassinggradeonthe inalexamination.
Ifastudentisnotpresentforthe inalexamandhasavalidexcuseforhis/herabsence,thegroupleaderwillsetadatefortheexam,notmorethan15daysaftertheendofthecourse.Onlythestudentswhohavebeenfaithfulinattendanceandhaveful illedthestudyrequirementswillbegiventheopportunitytomakeuptheexam.
Suspensionforabsenteeism.Thestudentwhofailedbymissingmorethanonefourthoftheweeklymeetingsofacoursewillnothavetheopportunitytotakeamake‐uptest.He/shewillhavetorepeatthecourse.SeealsoAttendance.

Expulsion
INSTEreservestherighttoexpelastudentforthefollowingreasons:evidenceofabandoningtheChristianevangelicalfaith,attitudesthatharmtheunityoftheINSTEgroupand/orthelocalchurch,expulsionfromthelocalchurchonbiblically‐provengrounds,orabandonmentoffaithfulcommunioninalocalchurch.
EvidenceofapossiblecauseforexpulsionwillbepresentedtoINSTEinwriting,signedbythegroupleaderandresponsibleleadersinthelocalchurch.Theadministrationwillinvestigatetheallegationandinterviewthestudent.Iftheaccusationsareproventobetrue,thestudentwillbeexpelledfromINSTE.Thestudentwillbenoti iedinwritingofhis/herexpulsion.Thegroupleaderandotherresponsiblepartiesatthelocalchurchwillalsobenoti iedinwriting.Thestudentwillbeallowedtore‐enrollinINSTEifandwhenhe/shedemonstratesrepentanceandrestorationand,duringaperiodoftimedeterminedbyINSTEandthelocalchurchleaders,evidencesgoodtestimonyofhis/herspiritualandmoralrestoration.

INSTEisnotlikeotherprogramsthatrequiretheleadertopreparelectures,orbethe“sageonthestage.”TheacademicmaterialtobelearnedinINSTEisintheinteractivetext.Groupmeetingsarefocusedondynamicre lectiononthecontentstudiedduringtheweek.Thatiswhythemajorfocusingroupleadertrainingisongroupinteraction.
TheINSTEdidacticsystemisbasedonsmallgroupsfacilitatedbygroupleaders.Thegroupleader'smajorresponsibilitiesincludeoverseeingthespiritualwell‐beingofthegroup,fosteringChrist‐likerelationshipswithinthegroup,leadingdiscussionsbasedonthestudents'studyandexperience,proctoringexamsandful illingtheadministrativeresponsibilitiesrelatedtoleadingagroup.
Groupleadersarenotinstructors.Theyarefacilitatorsi.e.personswhohelplinkthecontentofwhatthestudentslearnwiththeirlifeandministryexperience.
