Overview of the Cisco ONS 15216 FBG DCUA DCU is placed in an optical network when the accumulated chromatic dispersion exceeds the maximumallowed dispersion tolerance. The DCU compensates for chromatic dispersion generated in the optical fiber, thus avoiding the need of dropping and regenerating the degraded optical signal. There are different types ofDCUs and the fiber Bragg grating dispersion compensation unit is one of them. In an FBGDCU, the dispersioncompensation is achieved by using a short segment of optical fiber having periodic variation in its refractiveindex.

Product DescriptionThe Cisco ONS 15216 FBG DCU is a low latency dispersion compensation unit (DCU) that uses the FiberBragg Grating (FBG) technology. It has a very low insertion loss when compared to a standard DCU. TheCisco ONS 15216 FBG DCU complements the Cisco ONS 15216 platform and can interoperate with theONS 15454, ONS 155xx, and ONS 15600 products.

There are multiple FBG DCU modules, each designed to operate at a specific compensation level. Individualmodules can be cascaded to provide higher level of compensation. The Cisco ONS 15216 FBGDCUmodulesoperate in the C-band within the wavelength range of 1528.77 nm to 1566.31 nm at a 100 GHz grid spacing.

The Cisco ONS 15216 FBGDCU should be used only in networks carrying traffic at 100 GHz grid spacing.Note

The FBG DCU consists of the following components:

• FBGDCUmodule—This unit performs the dispersion compensation process. It consists of optical fibergrating, optical connectors, and optical mating adapters for optical input and output connections. Theoptical mating adapter has a shutter that provides protection from laser radiation. The shutter also protectsagainst dirt and dust, which can cause equipment failure.

The FBG DCU module has a USB port, which is used only when the FBG DCU is placed in anONS 15454 M6 shelf. The USB connection between the FBG DCU module and the ONS 15454 M6shelf is used for retrieving inventory data.

The FBG DCU module is a passive unit and therefore, does not need any electrical power supply.

The various parts of the FBG DCU module are shown in the following figure.

Uninstalling the FBG DCUIf the DCU unit is not functioning properly, it results in high insertion loss. When this insertion loss exceedsa threshold value, the DCU-LOSS-FAIL alarm is raised in CTC. For more information about theDCU-LOSS-FAIL alarm, see the Cisco ONS 15454 DWDM Troubleshooting Guide.

For the purpose of maintenance or replacement, you need to uninstall the FBGDCU by sequentially followingthese procedures.

Removing the FBG DCU Module from the DCU Chassis

Procedure

Step 1 Disconnect the optical and USB cables from the FBG DCU module.Step 2 Push the locking latch to the left and hold it. The locking latch is located on the right-side of the FBG DCU

module, as shown in the following figure. If the locking latch is jammed, apply more pressure to release it.

Step 3 Use the pull handle to pull the module until the locking latch comes out free, as shown in the following figure. The pull handle is provided on the center of the front panel.

Removing the DCU Chassis Grounding

This procedure must be performed only after removing the FBG DCU module from the DCU chassis byperforming the steps listed in Removing the FBG DCU Module from the DCU Chassis, on page 12.

Note

Procedure

Step 1 Unscrew the lug screws from the grounding lug.Step 2 Disconnect the chassis ground strap from the FBG DCU chassis.Step 3 Disconnect the chassis ground strap from the office ground point or the rack ground point.

Removing the DCU Chassis from the Rack

Procedure

Step 1 Unscrew the rack mounting screws from the mounting brackets.Step 2 With both hands lift the DCU chassis out of the rack.Step 3 If required, unscrew the mounting brackets from the DCU chassis.

Cleaning and Maintaining Fiber-Optic ConnectorsConnector cleaning is required to maintain the performance of fiber-optic circuits. It is important that boththe LC/UPC connector at the end of the fiber-optic cable and the optical mating adapter on the front panel ofthe device are clean before the connection is made.

Invisible laser radiation may be emitted from disconnected fibers or connectors. Do not stare into beamsor view directly with optical instruments. Statement 1051

Warning

The following warning applies to disposal of chemicals and other materials used to clean connectors andadapters:

Ultimate disposal of this product should be handled according to all national laws and regulations.Statement 1040

Warning

Before installing the fiber-optic cable, always perform the cleaning procedure for cable connectors describedin the following section. Whenever possible, inspect each connector before connecting it to the opticalmating adapter on the front panel.

Note

The LC optical mating adapter on the faceplate of the device is less likely to get dirty if it is capped whennot in use. On some devices, the optical mating adapter has a shutter. The shutter automatically closeswhen the LC/UPC connector is disconnected. This prevents entry of dirt.

The procedure for a thorough cleaning of these adapters is complicated. Use a commercially availablecleaning kit and closely follow the instructions included with the kit.

Note

Customer-supplied Cleaning MaterialsThe Type A fiber optic connector cleaners (for example, CLETOP reel) are recommended to clean the cableconnectors, but are not supplied with the device.

If properly maintained (only used with clean, defect-free fiber connectors and capped when not in use), themating adapter would not require cleaning. However, if you suspect the adapter is dirty, clean it by using theCLETOP stick swab.

For multifiber cable assemblies, use specific cleaning tools or materials designed for the assembly type.Note

Cleaning the Optical Mating Adapter

Procedure

Step 1 Read the cartridge cleaning instructions (provided by the manufacturer) to insert the cartridge cleaning tipinto the optical mating adapter.

Step 2 Slide the lever on the cartridge to swipe the mating surface.Always keep unused adapter ports and fiber connectors capped with a clean dust cap. The opticalmating adapters that have shutter need not be capped.

Cleaning Fiber-Optic Cable ConnectorsThe tools required to clean fiber connectors are:

• Inspection microscope

• Type A Fiber Optic Connector Cleaner (CLETOP reel)

• Optical swab

• Optical receiver cleaning stick

Procedure

Step 1 Using an inspection microscope, inspect each fiber connector for dirt, cracks, or scratches.Step 2 Replace any damaged fiber connectors.

Replace all dust caps whenever the equipment is unused for 30 minutes ormore.

Note

Do not reuse optical swabs. Keep unused swabs off of work surfaces.Caution

Step 3 Clean the fiber connectors with CLETOP reel:a) If present, remove the dust cap from the fiber connector.b) Press the lever down to open the shutter door. Each time you press the lever, you expose a clean wiping

surface.c) Insert the connector into the CLETOP cleaning cassette slot, rotate one-quarter turn, and gently swipe

downwards.d) Use an inspection microscope to inspect each fiber connector for dirt, cracks, or scratches. If the connector

is not clean, repeat the above sub-steps.e) Insert the fiber connector into the applicable adapter or attach a dust cap to the fiber connector.

Before replacing a dust cap on a connector, verify that the dust cap is clean. To clean the dust cap, wipe the outside of the cap using a dry, lint-free wipe and the inside of the dust cap using a CLETOPstick swab (14100400).
