However, today people who take short cuts through the graveyard, to and from their homes, are being attacked by thugs kneeling down, pretending to be a “cross.” Nontando Yantolo (65), a victim of the “cross” in this graveyard, said the inci- dent happened while she was walking through the graveyard to her house in Duduza last Month. “It was getting dark outside. The thug was kneeling down in the graveyard. His elbows were sticking out side by side and he posed like a cross.” “The culprit rose and threw himself on me. He robbed me of my R100 note. I didn’t even scream because no one would hear me in the graveyard. I didn’t want to open a case with the police, as I was scared they would just ask me why I was taking a short cut through the grave- yard.” Mthubanzi Mniki, Nelson Mandela Bay spokesman, said, “We would like to advise people not to take short cuts, but use the tarred roads instead. The ceme- tery is fenced, but people keep on making gaps, in order to cross through the grave- yard to their homes. By doing so, they be- come victims of the alleged ‘crosses’..”

However, today people who take shortcuts through the graveyard, to and fromtheir homes, are being attacked by thugskneeling down, pretending to be a“cross.”

According to the police report, the boy –fromTabataStreet inNewBrighton–whowasin custody in this juvenile institution, was

among six boys who tried to escape on Mon-day, October 7.“We heard the boy was among the six boys

who were trying to abscond from the centre.They were chased and apprehended by the af-tercare workers,” said Social Developmentand Special Programmes spokesperson,Gcobani Maswana.Maswana said they were told that the de-

ceased died from serious head injuries.“He sustained injuries from an alleged beat-

ing by a supervisor, after the duo had an alter-cation.”The boywas rushed to the Dora Nginza hos-

pital. He was later transferred to the Living-stone hospital, where he passed away in theIntensive Care Unit on Friday.MECMajodinaandNelsonMandelaBayEx-

ecutiveMayorBensonFihla sent theirdeepestcondolences to the family of the deceased.MEC Majodina and the mayor visited and

apologised to the Mali family for this unfortu-nate incident. They pledged to support thefamily with funeral arrangements this Satur-day.“The MEC is saddened and distraught by

the loss of life. She had, however, called forcalm among members of staff at the centre

awareness aboutways of avoiding blindnessand visual impairment.Life Mercantile celebrates this annual

event to ensure that eye-sight is restoredwhere possible.The beneficiaries of this good deed, ac-

from theProvincialHospitalwho otherwisecould not have afforded to pay for privatehealthcare procedures.Special ophthalmologists in the Port Eliz-

A security guard (38) appeared in court onMonday on charges of the possession of unli-censed firearms and ammunition.

According to police spokesperson, Consta-bleMbombo, the accusedwas arrested by theNew Brighton Police at about 3am on Thurs-day.“Police were tipped off by a member of the

public that there was a man carrying an ille-gal firearm.”

The police went to the suspect’s place ofwork in Grahamstown Road, Port Elizabethand found a firearm.“When the police arrived at the company

they searched the suspect and found an unli-censed pistol with four rounds of live ammu-nition,” said Mbombo. From here the policetook the suspect to his house in Kwazakhele.Police searched his house and found an un-

licensed R5 rifle and three rounds of live am-munition.The man appeared in court onMonday. He was remanded in custody forbail application on October 2l.

MISTAKING a private motor-vehicle fora Jikeleza taxi might have led to the al-leged sexual attack and robbery of awoman (19) inAmanzi Estate near Uiten-hage last week.

The Family Violence Child Protectionand Sexual Offences Unit (FCS) is inves-

tigating a case of rape.“It is alleged that the 19 year-old vic-

tim got inside a blackVWJetta in Zwide,thinking that it was a taxi,” said policespokeperson Warrant Officer GerdaSwart.According to Swart, the driver of the

vehicle drove the victim to Amanzi Es-tate, where he forced her out of the vehi-cle and into the bushes where he rapedher.“The suspect robbed the victim of her

cellphone, before driving off and leav-ing her behind in the bushes,” saidSwart.According to Swart, the victim was

assisted by a passer-by and was trans-ported to the nearest police station,where the matter was reported.““A case of rape and robbery was

opened for investigation.”She urged anyone with information

that might be helpful to the police, per-taining to the vehicle or the identifica-tion of the suspect, to contact the police.The suspect is belived to be living in

Others, like their teachers, werein academic regalia - all in the nameof exploring possible career options,according to Grade 7 teacher Bule-lwa Funani.

Funani said, “We were showcas-ing dream careers to inspire our pu-pils using Life Orientation as thesubject. According to Funani, theschool was aware of the need forthese pupils coming from one of themost impoverished townships inNelson Mandela Bay to get empow-erment through education.

“Please don’t become a criminal.Tell yourselves you’re too smart tobecome a criminal,” urged Deputy-principal Nomonde Mgoduka.

Mbalula who met sports fans, teams andsporting federations at the Lilian NgoyiSport Centre in Kwazakhele on Thursdayas part of Government’s Imbizo Week to en-gage stakeholders in the municipalitiesheard how City Lads FC, the Kia Street Soc-

cer National U-14 Champions were strug-gling to get passports to Brazil.

This is after the New Brighton townshipclub shrugged off all opposition in the com-petition from local, provincial and nationalteams all the way to winning the covetedtrophy and the trip to represent South Afri-ca in an international championship inBrazil, according to club official PhillipTsoela.

Tsoela who doubles as New BrightonFootball Association (NEBFA) Marketingand Communications Manager, said

though the young boys were excited aboutthe prospects of playing football in amonth-long competition in Brazil fromMay 25 2014, they were, however, strug-gling to pay R480 each to get a passport asdemanded by the Home Affairs Depart-ment.

The organisers of the competition havepromised to pay for airfares, accommoda-tion and meals for the young participants.

“Some of these children come from verypoor backgrounds and their mostly unem-ployed parents cannot afford to pay that

kind of money,” pleaded Tsoela.An upbeast Minister Mbalula congratu-

lated the team for their success and prom-ised to assist them with their needs.

“We’ll support the team with their needs,without a doubt. It will not be the first timethat we (the Department) give people mon-ey,” said Mbalula.
