What is a Green Building?

• According to the EPA, Green, or sustainable, building is the practice of creating and using healthier and more resource-efficient models of construction, renovation, operation, maintenance and demolition.

• Historically Preserved BuildingsHistoric Preservation is the process of preserving and conserving an existing building in its original state. In Historic Preservation, materials including bricks, floors and trims, are often reused from the existing building or recycled from another property or architectural salvage.

• Some Renovated Buildings. The LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Credit MRI. I-1.3 states that building reuse is to maintain 50-70% of an existing building. Credit MR 2.1 and 2.2 discusses the diversion of materials from the waste stream through recycling building materials.

Both Historic Preservation and Renovating include the following:

-Reusing the existing building -Reusing existing materials

What is a Green Building?According to the EPA, Green buildings are designed to reduce the overall impact of the built environment on human health and the natural environment by:

•Efficiently using energy, water, and other resources

•Protecting occupant health and improving employee productivity

•Reducing waste, pollution and environmental degradation

Facts

• In 2007, there was an estimated 30 percent gain from 2006 in the square footage of green roofs in North America. Now the figure has jumped to 2,407,525 square feet, according to the survey of Green Roofs for Healthy Cities — a 40 percent gain for extensive green roofs....Philadelphia and Washington, D.C., are now on the U.S. top 10 cities list for green roofs.

Green Roofs• Greenroofs are vegetated roof

covers, with growing media and plants taking the place of bare membrane, gravel ballast, shingles or tiles. The number of layers and the layer placement vary from system to system and greenroof type, but at the very least all greenroofs include a single to multi-ply waterproofing layer, drainage, growing media and the plants, covering the entire roof deck surface.

Kitchen Checklist

Use formaldehyde-free materials. Seal all exposed particleboard or MDF. Use FSC-certified wood flooring. Use rapidly renewable flooring materials. Use recycled-content tile. Replace vinyl flooring with natural

linoleum. Use exposed concrete as finish floor. Calculate paint needs beforehand. Use low – or no-VOC and formaldehyde-

free paint. Use low-VOC, water-based wood finishes. Deal properly with finish leftovers. Use solvent-free adhesives.

Insulate pipes. Install on-demand hot water

circulation pump. Investigate your water supply. Install a whole-house water filtration

system.

Energy StarENERGY STAR is a joint program of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Department of Energy helping us all save money and protect the environment through energy efficient products and practices. A joint group of manufacturers that create a labeling of products that increase energy efficiency.

Energy Star Homes are Labeled through a home for verification of efficiency by a third party rater backed by the EPA and the U.S. Department of Energy.

LEED®• The LEED® green building certification program is a

voluntary, consensus-based national rating system for buildings designed, constructed and operated for improved environmental and human health performance. LEED addresses all building types and emphasizes state-of-the- art strategies in five areas: sustainable site development, water savings, energy efficiency, materials and resources selection, and indoor environmental quality.

GREEN RATER

LEED has established a new category of rater certification, the Green Rater. The Green Rater has been trained and certified to inspect and verify the green features of a home in addition to the home's energy performance.
