You may be a seasoned teacher or trainer, but learners are changing regardless of their age due to life experience, technology influences outside of the classroom, and demands of daily life. IT providers, administrators, facilities are purchasing and installing hardware and software to make your life easier or so they say. Digital natives, also known as the net generation are described as those who have had access to computers, video games, the Internet and other digital services since their childhood. Typically they are thinking globally, tolerant of diversity, and appreciate freedom and collaboration. These kids embrace change; they want to be measured and want to see how they are growing. As the children become adults, the expectation from any training environment remains the same. In fact, chances are they wont thrive in what most of consider to be a traditional learning environment of lecture or presentation, followed by independent practice or rote tasks and concluding with a paper/pencil test. The expectation is to be Learning the tools and the skills of remaking the content the application and synthesis levels we say on the Blooms chart.

Informal and social learning are making a big difference toward formal learning as well. Formal learning is what were used to seeing in the classroom, but those casual life experiences, on the job training, or shared learning in social settings help each of us grow as well. Depending on the age difference between you as the instructor and your students, there could a significant gap between your comfort and the learners expectations. The previous experience and knowledge we bring will greatly impact the absorption and application of the content. 9Professional growth

Spend 5-10 minutes reflecting on your own previous training experiences. What environments have you excelled in? What tools do you use for delivery, is your presentation style and content reflective of 21st century learning, are your participants collaborating, completing tasks that are real-world applicable, problem based? Do you provide your learners with next steps for the implementation of the new knowledge. Journal your thoughts so you are able to later refer back for documentation of your own growth, as well as what is exhibited by your students.10
