First step: importing video into iMovie

The first step is a simple one: go to "File," then drag your mouse to "Import," and then select "Movies." In previous times, I've tried "Import from camera," but that method does not always bring in the whole video.

Editing clips in the timeline

Once the clip is imported, it will appear, along with other imported clips, in the holding place in the upper left section of iMovie.

To add a clip to your timeline, simply drag it from its current location to the timeline below. You can choose how long of the clip you'd like to appear in the timeline by clicking and dragging the yellow frame around the clip.

Inserting b-roll into a clipThis has gotten super-easy, thanks to a tip from Karen Workman at The Oakland Press. On our machine, I've enable the advanced tools, which allows us to drop in b-roll simply by dragging it above the a-roll you want it to play over. Once you drop it, it will open a menu that looks like this:

Hit "cutaway" and your b-roll will be inserted over the selected area.

What it looks like

You can still adjust where you'd like the b-roll, just click and drag it over the spot you want it to be.

Adjusting the audio in a trackOnce b-roll is inserted, changing the volume becomes important, because in some cases, you don't want both a- and b-roll audio blasting at the same level. To change the audio settings on a clip, hit the little blue gear at the beginning of said clip, and select "Audio Adjustments."

Audio adjustment levelsThe level at which you'd like to have the audio on b-roll (or a-roll) is entirely dependent on the project: with some, you may want it higher, say, at 35 or 40 percent, while some you want it turned off completely.

Lower thirds and other text screensIf you want to add any type of lower third or other text screen, you can do so by going to the right side of the screen and hitting the little "T" icon. There, you can add a lower third or text screen to a video.

(Use these sparingly, as many viewers will not be watching in full screen mode, and it could become very difficult to read. Always use discrepancy.)

Removing transitions

We've been instructed to remove transitions during our videos, and it can be easily done by right-clicking the transition in the timeline, and then hitting "Delete Selection." It will then ask if you would like to turn off automatic transitions, and you select "Turn off automatic transitions."

Finishing your movieOnce you've completed your project, the last step is to export it into a format that can be published in Syndicaster. Do this by going to "Share" and then selecting "Export using QuickTime." This will export your movie, then you can upload it to Syndicaster.
