Why engage families?

Raising the next generation is a shared responsibility.

When families, communities and schools work together, students are more successful and the entire community benefits.

For schools and districts across the United States, family engagement is becoming an integral part of education reform efforts.

Why engage families now?

Family engagement has been a priority for years, but the pandemic intensified the need.

The full-time family engagement specialist position was created to help with:

o Enrollment

o Attendance

o Engagement

o Education

o Retention

o Resources

o Trauma

Page 9: Imagination Fort Worth

The timing is perfect.

For years, principals had to use Title I funds to hire a full-time family specialist.

This year, district leaders allocated ESSER III funds to create a full-time family engagement position at every elementary and middle school campus.

In addition, most Fort Worth ISD schools receive Title I funds earmarked for family engagement activities.

Page 11: Imagination Fort Worth

The Tone from the Top

• Love others and if it’s all you do, it will be enough.

• Parent Partnerships will impact district and campus goals and improve student outcomes by: o Reaching out to families

o Meeting families where they are

o Listening to what families need

o Connecting families with resources

o Building relationships.

What are your school’s rocks?

Schools have big priorities and goals for this year.

Homework:

1) By September 30, reach out to your principal and find out your school’s rocks for 2021-2022.

2) Decorate each rock to represent one of the school’s rocks.

3) Snap a photo of your rocks.

4) By October 15, post your photo on social media for Parent Partnerships and your school.

Early Reading

Campus family engagement funds can be used for take-home books, supplies for literacy night, and snacks for parent literacy workshops. Time, listening, eye contact, reading with different voices, and focus – these cannot be purchased but make all the difference.

Middle Grades Math

Campus family engagement funds can be used for flash cards; supplies for STEM night, calculator coaching, or tech training; and snacks for STEM workshops. Time, space, focus, patience, real-world examples – these cannot be purchased but make all the difference.
