    Dear Friends

It is imperative for all of us in the Industry to pursue growthin an ecologically sustainable manner. Adhering to thisfundamental principle will not only provide immenseenvironmental benets but also makes good business sense.

Ten years back, when we started offering green advisoryservices from CII-Sohrabji Godrej Green Business Centre, our

vision was that the Centre should facilitate India to emergeas one of the global leaders in green businesses. The Centrewas created to provide leadership on varied subjects relatedto green. I am glad we have made signicant strides in thisdirection.

I am happy that Green Buildings took off in a manner whereIndia is now well poised to play a leadership role. It is amatter of pride to see India stand tall amongst the countriespursuing Green Buildings.

I personally believe that we now need to broaden the scopeof Green Buildings to cover Green Habitats and look at allcommunities which would make it more inclusive. Pursuingthe green path will benet mankind and preserve thebiodiversity of this planet.

Building sector accounts for nearly 40 % the green housegas emissions that are responsible for the threat of globalwarming. Therefore this sector presents an excellentopportunity to signicantly reduce carbon emission

intensity by 20 per cent in the next 10 years, an opportunitywhich we should never let go.

IGBC, with its new and broad vision to include habitatsis well poised to add value and address environmentalissues like extending the life of our Natural capital, preservation of threatened species, livable cities, sustainabletransport, community living, green employment andabove all facilitate in providing a better quality of life.

To make all these happen would require leadership. IGBChas been fortunate to have Mr Padmanabhan, USAID,

Dr Prem C Jain, Mr. ParasuRaman and several others inleading from the front. I would like to thank them for theircontinued involvement, guidance and providing direction tothe Indian Green Building Council (IGBC). I would also liketo thank the Chair, Vice-chair and active members of variouslocal chapters for their passion and commitment.

Forging partnerships with world-class institutes has alwaysbeen a source of strength in building our expertise. Weare working closely with various National & internationalorganisations including World GBC, USDoE, USGBC,

Green Building Council of Australia (GBCA), ASHRAE, BCA,WRI, WWF, ORNL, IAPMO, LBNL, RockeFeller Foundation,University of Salford and other Indian organisations like BEE,CEPT, CREDAI and others. These collaborations are providingus a unique opportunity to synergise and work towards acommon goal of greening India.

My aspiration is that IGBC should be seen as a globalthought leader and an enabler for implementing greenhabitats in India and I am convinced that we are well poised

    to demonstrate such leadership.

    Best regards

    Dear Friends

When we began our journey of ushering in the greenbuilding movement in India in 2001, our dream was to makeIndia global leader in Green Buildings.

Today, ten years later, we look back with gladness, that our journey has been fullling & exciting. India is today seen asone among the top 5 countries having a large green buildingfootprint. Personally, this is heart-warming and gratifying tome, and I am sure to all my Hum-Rahees (fellow travellers).

We hold our heads high and speak with pride that Indiahas over 1.25 Billion sq.ft of green building footprint and1,750 registered green building projects, positioning usamongst leading nations of the world. We have a great senseof emotional pride that more 300,000 homes in India haveembraced the concept of Green Homes. Today the greenrating systems, promoted by IGBC, have become National bychoice and Global in performance.

Indian Construction Industry is poised to grow by an orderof magnitude in the next twenty years, with major thruston housing. Therefore, IGBC focus is to address sustainablehabitats in the coming years. With this in mind, theExecutive Committee has re-drafted IGBC vision To enablea sustainable built environment for all and facilitate India tobe one of the global leaders in sustainable built environmentby 2025.

I am personally charged up with our new vision. We all haveto work shoulder to shoulder in translating this vision into areality. Like most other pursuits with a longer perspectiveand horizon, this new vision will also unfold a plethora ofchallenges and opportunities alike. Few of the key strategiesthat would enable us in accomplishing this vision are:

Include all communities in the green building agenda.Demonstrate model green building projects in atleast100 villages

Establish IGBC Student Chapters in 100 architecturalcolleges and equal number of engineering collegesaccross the country

Facilitate 500 indigenous product manufacturers tobrand and market their products on basis of greenbuilding attributes

Develop green building standards in areas wherepresently none exists.

Ensure that IGBCs certication process and deliverymechanism is world-class and delivers completecustomer delight

Facilitate the establishment of R & D and material testinglabs within India.

Reach all sections of the stakeholders through the localchapters and address local aspirations

The student communityhas always been closestto my heart, and Itreasure the 40 years ofassociation as VisitingFaculty at School ofPlanning & Architecture,New Delhi. IGBCStudents Chapters havegreat potential toinstill the seedof green ideasin youngminds andmould them into eco-sensitive citizens. The local chaptershave a key role to play here.

In the context of our declining landscapes which have aneffect on our micro-climates, we are consciously promotingGreen Landscape as another potential vehicle to address

ecological issues and concerns. This holds a lot of promiseand potential in the years to come.

We have our task cut. The path ahead is indeed challengingand exciting. Our Vision of facilitating Indias leadership rolein green buildings propels us to march ahead.

May I take the liberty here of naming some of our Champions,I am personally proud to be associated with, and deeplygrateful for their seless contribution:

Ajit Kumar Chordia, Amar Britto, Ashish Rakheja, B R Ajit,Bharat Kamat, Bhavesh Baldevbhai Shah, C N Raghavendran,Chandrashekar Hariharan, Col Sridharan, Gurmit Singh

Arora, J R Tanti, Jayesh Hariyani, K Raman, Karan Grover,Kishore Khaitan, Lalit Kumar Jain, M Anand, M Raghu,N K Ranganath, Padmanabhan, Parasuraman, Poorva Keskar,Pradeep Bhargava, Rajesh B Lund, Ravi Raheja, S Raghupathy,S Srinivas, Sameer Sinha, Shakuntala Ghosh, SharukhMistry, Shekar Reddy, Syed Mohamed Beary, Thiagarajan,V Suresh, Vidur Bharadwaj and all our members for theirwhole-hearted support and cooperation.

The strides made by the Council have been possible withthe passion and commitment, and unstinted whole-hearted support by our founding members, members ofIGBC, supporting organizations, developers, builders and

architectural community. We will not rest on our laurels and we will march ahead witha singular mission that IGBC Vision becomes a reality andIndia helps preserve all life forms on our beautiful MotherEarth.
