category.

Evaluate the connection between solar energy and

the energy found in food.

lead to improved long-term health?

eat.

Of these they are divided in to _____3____ types of nutrients.

Page 6: If You Really Knew Me

For this presentation you will be

looking at descriptions of the

Macronutrients

You and your partners will determine

which nutrient fits the description.

Hold up the sign that your group fills

is correct.

For each correct response, the group

gets 1 point.

Fill in the answers in the appropriate

section of the notes.

At the end of the presentation the

team with the highest number of points

will be the winner and receive an

advantage

IF YOU REALLY KNEW ME YOU WOULD KNOW….

I am necessary for brain function

I am also broken into 3 additional descriptions

Page 8: If You Really Knew Me

A part of the

Carbohydrate

family

YOU WOULD KNOW THAT I AM

This is the main

source of the body’s

energy , are necessary

for brain function and

are broken into

starches, sugars, and

fiber.

Page 9: If You Really Knew Me

IF YOU REALLY KNEW ME YOU WOULD KNOW….

I help manufacture hormones,

I keep the body warm, and I

am essential for growth and

health

Page 10: If You Really Knew Me

A part of

the FATS

family

YOU WOULD KNOW THAT I AM

Fats are a necessary

component of body

tissue, they make

hormones, protect

cells and internal

organs, keep the body

warm, and allow us to

store calories to protect

us from times when food

in unavailable.

Page 11: If You Really Knew Me

IF YOU REALLY KNEW ME YOU WOULD KNOW….

I am know as the “building

blocks” of life

Without me most basic life

functions cannot be carried out

Page 12: If You Really Knew Me

A part of

the Protein

Family

YOU WOULD KNOW THAT I AM

Almost all cells in the body are

constantly being broken down

and then rebuilt, requiring a

steady supply of protein. Works

with the body to build and repair

tissues, necessary for blood

clotting, and keeps the immune

system strong and fighting

disease. In other words they are

the “ b u i l d i n g b l o c k s ”

Page 13: If You Really Knew Me

IF YOU REALLY KNEW ME YOU WOULD KNOW….

It is recommended to consume

25-35% of me in your daily diet

I stay in the stomach longer than

other foods, making you feel full

Page 14: If You Really Knew Me

A member

of the fats

family

YOU WOULD KNOW THAT I AM

Fats needs are

expressed as a percent

of total energy needs,

which depends on levels

of physical activity. For

children ages 2-18 25-

35% will be part of a

balanced diet.

Page 15: If You Really Knew Me

IF YOU REALLY KNEW ME YOU WOULD KNOW….

I help muscles work better

Forms of me include

starch, fiber, and sugar

Page 16: If You Really Knew Me

Energy form these

provide fuel for all

activities. Starches,

sugars, and fiber are

all sub-categories of this

family. It is best to eat

limited amounts of

sugars for a healthy diet.

Page 17: If You Really Knew Me

IF YOU REALLY KNEW ME YOU WOULD KNOW….

That I cannot be absorbed

or digested and I am

important for “cleaning out”

the digestive track as I pass

through the body

Page 18: If You Really Knew Me

I am fiber a

part of the

carbohydrat

e family

YOU WOULD KNOW THAT I AM

A portion of a plant that can not

be digested, fiber can absorb

water and help get rid of waste

products. Fiber may help prevent

heart disease, cancer, and

diabetes. When not enough is

consumed, constipation may

occur, but too much will cause

nutrients to pass through too

quickly to be absorbed.

CHANGE ROLES IN YOUR GROUP

Page 20: If You Really Knew Me

IF YOU REALLY KNEW ME YOU WOULD KNOW….

I reduce the effects of arthritis

I help food taste better

I am found in animal and plant

sources

Page 21: If You Really Knew Me

YOU WOULD KNOW THAT I AM

Fats are important for

increasing energy intake

to more adequate levels.

The type of fat in the

diet has important

effects on health

Page 22: If You Really Knew Me

Other descriptions of be include

monounsaturated, saturated and

cholesterol

I am found in fish, nuts, canola oil,

and nuts

Two unsaturated fats

are essential fatty acids

because they are

essential to health and

have to be eaten

because the body can

not make them. Omega-3

fatty acids are essential

Page 24: If You Really Knew Me

I can be found in plant and

animal sources

I am found in foods such as

meat, dried beans, and legumes

Page 25: If You Really Knew Me

proteins

family

These are a major

component of the body’s

transportation system

and carry oxygen and

nutrients to all cells of

the body.

Page 26: If You Really Knew Me

IF YOU REALLY KNEW ME YOU WOULD KNOW….

I am needed for the absorption

of vitamins and provide energy to

carry out bodily functions

I am often found in fried and

baked foods

Page 27: If You Really Knew Me

While fats are needed

in the body it is

recommended to limit

the amount of trans fats

of “partially

hydrogenated” oils often

found in margarine and

chips or cakes

Page 28: If You Really Knew Me

Other description of me

include starch, sugar, or fiber

The majority of calories we

eat come from starchy foods

Page 29: If You Really Knew Me

These foods are widely

available and in

sufficient amounts are

the main source of

energy

Page 30: If You Really Knew Me

IF YOU REALLY KNEW ME YOU WOULD KNOW…

I provide energy for every cell and at

least half of daily calories should be me

I also add sweetness to foods, provide

fullness, and found in peelings of fruits

and vegetables

Starches, sugars, and

fibers are important

parts of the diet. If is

recommended to

consume whole grain

bread instead of white

because during

processing a lot of

nutrients are lost.

Page 32: If You Really Knew Me

Almost all foods contain

me, even in small amounts

I provide the highest

level of energy

Page 33: If You Really Knew Me

cholesterol control risk of

heart disease.

LDL is called low-density

lipoprotein

Most fat needs to come from

unsaturated fats including

oils, seeds, nuts, and fatty fish

APPLICATION ACTIVITY

Take one meal from your food record and analyze

your macronutrients• Example: chicken wings, corn on cob with butter,

and bread would be protein, fats, and carbohydrates.
